Daily Batter Breakdown: Tue, July 22nd
Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.
Another game at Coors Field tonight and another lefty on the mound should make for another big owned night for the Washington right handers. I will preview a couple but will also check out some other guys in good matchups to target other than the entire Nationals right handed lineup.

Salvador Perez
Perez has continued to hit pretty well against right handers and well in general this year even while the Royals have fallen from grace. Vegas still does not believe in Scott Carroll even after 2 monster performances as they have the Royals as favorites (Who have Bruce Chen pitching) at Chicago even considering how horrible they are. This is a pretty strong statement and I think the Royals are a contrarian stack option tonight as Carroll is due to implode soon. Perez has hit .812 against righties this year and has some pretty solid numbers against them so far.

Dan Johnson
Johnson continues to be min-priced over at DraftKings and continues to be an intriguing option hitting in one of the most homer-friendly parks against a pitcher who loves giving up homers to lefties. The salary gain you can get from punting the 1b position with a guy who has a good homer potential is incredible if he does hit one. Johnson is also put in a spot against Peavy, whom I will note below is homer prone, this makes him a great salary saver especially for the giant DK tourney tonight.

Dustin Pedroia
I almost feel like Pedroia made every single out for the Red Sox last night in their destruction of the Jays, which had to have made him angry. He’s not hitting well right now at all but he will put in the work to make it right. I’m not a fan of Happ who has had some major stinkers this year and has a 1.55 WHIP. Pedroia has always destroyed lefties, and I really don’t think that he will be highly owned tonight. I’m liking the bit of the salary dip and think he’s in a good spot.

Juan Francisco
Francisco will most likely grab the start against the righty Peavy and even though the Jays were trounced last night, I still think they could put up some numbers tonight at home. Francisco is very cheap but has hit righties to a .882 OPS and 13 of his 14 HRs this year. He is also in homer-friendly Rogers Centre. Peavy has allowed 12 HR to lefties in 232 ABs and this is definitely looking like a spot where a low owned Francisco might go deep.

Ian Desmond
Why not? Desmond was perfect at the plate against a below average lefty last night in Coors, so what’s the problem with using him again tonight against a terrible lefty in Coors? I can’t see anything wrong with this move especially because he will still be one of the cheaper options on the Nationals.

Alex Gordon
I mentioned about Sal Perez against Carroll earlier and I also like Alex Gordon tonight. The Royals have been just miserable but this is a solid chance for them to get back on track. Gordon is probably their best hitter and is coming around against right handed pitching. He has been decent lately and has upped that OPS to .783 against righties. Carroll is not good and I expect him to give up a decent amount of runs today.

Jacoby Ellsbury
Ellsbury has been a little disappointing against righties this year but did homer last night off Mikolas and could be turning it around. I like him again tonight for his lower-than-it-should-be price and the fact that the Mikolas/Martinez back to back Rangers starting pitchers makes for a solid stack for the other teams lefties. Martinez has been bad especially against lefties giving up a .950 OPS.

Jayson Werth
Werth was highly owned last night and I guarantee he will be highly owned tonight as well. A .433 wOBA against lefties is a great number as is the 1.012 OPS and the fact that he is hitting in Coors. Flande hasn’t been good at all pitching in the majors this year and has a 1.70 WHIP along with not making it out of the 5th inning. The Nationals righties are again going to be popular plays.

Dayan Viciedo
Chen has been just garbage in his last 5 starts boosting his ERA to 6.46 and posting a 1.66 WHIP for this whole season. He’s really struggling against right handers with a .842 OPS which is nothing new because he hasn’t been a great pitcher throughout his career. Viciedo seems to be getting it together against left handers and is heading towards his numbers from last year where he absolutely crushed lefties. I like him at a cheap price and think he goes deep tonight.

Shin-Soo Choo
Choo has been so horrible recently, but with a couple of knocks last night could be breaking out of the slump. The great thing about Choo now is that he’s still a solid hitter over time and his price has gone way way down on a couple of sites. He’s crushed right handers in his career and is facing a guy in Whitley who really has not been great and has allowed a .858 OPS to lefties this year.
