Daily Batter Breakdown: Wed, July 23rd

Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.

0.978 0.931 $2,700 $8,250 $3,300 $72,800 $6,400 $8,250

Stephen Vogt

Vogt is still cheap on most every site and brings some solid power to the table tonight against right handers. He’s smashed 4 homers in 99 at bats against them this year leading to a .971 OPS which is extremely solid for a lower ranked catcher. He’s hitting a bit above his ability, however I would like to ride the hot streak out for a while especially with him hitting at home against Peacock tonight. The A’s are huge favorites tonight and Vegas is never a fan of Peacock which makes me think he’s going to get shelled at some point.

Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA

0.978 0.931 $3,900 $10,400 $4,700 $81,500 $7,700 $10,400

Brandon Moss

Again with one of the A’s playing at home, Moss should be a solid play at first in a game where the A’s over/under is 4.5 and they are huge favorites. Moss has a .375 wOBA against righties this year and always has a solid chance at a home run. Peacock has been oddly efficient at getting out lefties this season but if you take into account his other years, it looks like an anomaly as he has consistently allowed over a .840 OPS against lefties.

Article Image Neil Walker
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.280 0.831 5.06% 0.365
Last 7 Days Splits 0.533 1.388 6.67% 0.596

1.040 0.897 $3,500 $9,600 $4,300 $93,000 $7,200 $9,550

Neil Walker

Walker has been absolutely crushing the ball lately, getting more hits than outs in the last week along with a huge ISO. His price is creeping up there, but he’s still definitely in play against right handers, and really against Haren who is really one of the worst. Walker hits all of his homers off righties and Haren just allows them to everyone allowing also a high 1.9 WHIP in the last few weeks. I would really like to see Walker bat left handed against lefties and see what that does to his stats because he’s much better when swinging from the left side.

Article Image Pablo Sandoval
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.313 0.835 3.33% 0.361
Last 7 Days Splits 0.389 1 5.56% 0.437

0.862 1.037 $3,300 $9,100 $4,800 $75,700 $7,100 $8,950

Pablo Sandoval

Sandoval is another one of those mid-range guys who could provide some nice value tonight at 3rd. He has a solid matchup against Burnett who has allowed lefties to hit him at a .813 OPS with 8 homers this year, and his mind might not be on the game too much with all of the trade rumors circling the game. The Giants have solid Vegas numbers tonight and should be able to put up some runs again on the Phillies.

Article Image Stephen Drew
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.190 0.598 2.53% 0.257
Last 7 Days Splits 0.400 1.338 10.00% 0.558

Dickey – RIGHT 0.250 0.740 9.33% 0.330

1.106 1.045 $2,700 $7,150 $3,300 $54,300 $4,200 $5,950

Stephen Drew

It took a while, but Drew is finally back to making good contact with the bat and hitting the ball places. Fortunately for us, he’s been so bad for the start of the season that it’s keeping his numbers way down. He has homers in each of the last 2 games and gets to hit in Rogers Centre again tonight which is the place you want to be for homers. His price is very affordable, and with Dickey giving up 13 HR in 70 IP at home, I think Drew is definitely worth the bargain especially at a position where not much power can be found.

Article Image Gregory Polanco
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.290 0.753 2.00% 0.343
Last 7 Days Splits 0.133 0.267 0.00% 0.119

1.040 0.897 $3,100 $7,350 $3,900 $36,600 $6,300 $7,350

Gregory Polanco

Polanco has severely cooled off since the hot entry to the majors but the fact remains that he’s still a prime talent and showed it last night with a homer. His price has dropped which is great for whoever uses him because he’s leading off again against the Dodgers. I noted above how I really don’t like Haren and even in PNC Park I think Polanco will do some damage. The Pirates showed the could put crooked numbers up even in their spacious park and Haren will allow you to do that.

Article Image Andrew McCutchen
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.331 0.992 4.22% 0.426
Last 7 Days Splits 0.267 0.656 0.00% 0.291

1.040 0.948 $4,900 $12,850 $5,600 $112,300 $10,800 $13,150

Andrew McCutchen

If you’ve got Walker and Polanco, might as well consolidate it with McCutchen. Even with righty on righty, he’s still one of the top guys on the wOBA batters charts here at RotoGrinders. McCutchen is a stud and actually has a .992 OPS against right handers this year. Also helping out his cause is that both Ellis and Haren aren’t very good at catching base stealers, so guys like Polanco and McCutchen could have a field day here as well.

Article Image Kevin Kiermaier
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA

1.144 1.018 $3,700 $7,750 $3,900 $46,400 $7,600 $7,750

Kevin Kiermaier

Lynn has been very solid this year, but I really like the options that Kiermaier gives tonight. He’s cheap across the industry, and his numbers against righties this year are pretty incredible. He’s hit 7 HR in 127 ABs and also plastered righties with a 1.027 OPS which is all star outfielder numbers for a bargain. His .441 wOBA vs RHP is pretty solid and the Rays are clicking on all cylinders right now. If Wainwright can’t hold them down, I’m not sure about Lynn tonight.

Article Image Justin Upton
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.268 0.789 3.99% 0.345

0.949 0.933 $3,700 $10,850 $5,400 $80,900 $8,300 $10,800

Justin Upton

Upton is hot right now and one thing I’ve learned about this guy in the last year and a half is that you plug him in when he gets on a tear because he’s about to obliterate every pitcher in his path. Eovaldi has been solid lately, except for his last start when he looked lost against the Giants, but I really think Upton is one of the more solid options out there. He’s still pricy, but is very safe even righty vs righty.

Article Image David Ortiz
Daily Breakdown Avg OPS HR% wOBA
Left/Right Splits 0.237 0.804 5.70% 0.340
Last 7 Days Splits 0.167 0.722 11.11% 0.307

1.106 1.045 $3,900 $11,050 $5,200 $89,000 $8,500 $10,100

David Ortiz

Ortiz has been very affordable lately and is currently on the beginnings of one of his tears where he just homers for 5 games in a row. He’s swinging a hot bat and gets to hit against the knuckleballer Dickey in a dome. I really like Ortiz’ chances to get a hold of one of those tonight and keep that home run streak going. Dickey is super homer prone especially against lefties and Ortiz destroys them.
