Daily Batter Breakdown: Wed, July 30th
Welcome to the Daily Batter Breakdown. Each day, with at least 8 games on the night slate, I’ll breakdown some of the best top tier hitters to target based on matchup. The biggest split taken into account will be left/right, but each player card will also show park factors, player salaries and then a description of why I’ll be targeting him. Be sure to check out the FAQ for more information on specific stats.
Tonight feels a little bit like last night with the Yankees lefties all looking nice and a couple other teams looking like good plays. Definitely watch for some of these guys if there are any random trades that happen but most of the ones here should be safe to roll out tonight. Lester has already been ruled out so it will be Workman on the hill for Boston against Toronto tonight.

Salvador Perez
Perez is pretty cheap on about every site and definitely has homer power tonight at Kauffman. The Royals aren’t the big of favorites against Hughes but he was injured last time out and it will be interesting to see if he comes out favoring the shin at all. The greatest thing I like here is both Perez and Hughes are reverse-splits guys; Hughes has given up a .822 OPS to righties and Perez has hit with a .790 OPS against right handers as well.

Mark Teixeira
Again be careful about Teixeira tonight because he still isn’t 100% in the lineup but his 3,100 salary on FD is looking mighty tasty. He had a nice game last night against a righty in Texas and now faces Lewis who has been AWFUL against lefties with a .987 OPS allowed. Lewis has also been awful with the unwritten rules. Teixeira has crushed from the left handed part of the plate and is a great play today.

0.969 | 1.057 | $2,900 | $8,000 | $4,500 | $58,400 | $8,100 |
Dustin Pedroia
I’m really never sure what to think about Buehrle anymore, but I have hated the 2nd base pool for a while now. It’s almost like the SG spot on FD for NBA. Pedroia is a proven hitter who has been terrible lately but one thing that’s really attractive is that he’s crushed lefties in his career and he’s also really really cheap for a proven hitter.
Adrian Beltre | |||||||

$3,900 | $9,400 | $4,700 | $73,200 | $9,200 |
Adrian BeltreThis is close to the sitaution that Beltre was in last night when I liked him. He did a decent amount of damage against McCarthy and tonight Kuroda has the reverse splits that Beltre should like. This game has a solid over/under and I wouldn’t just look at the Yankees bats in this game as the Rangers could put up some runs too.

Jose Reyes
Reyes is expensive but my favorite play in the SS pool tonight. Like I said, you would have to pay for him but he has a solid matchup against Workman who will be starting in place of the trade-rumored Lester today. Workman hasn’t been workmanlike lately. Reyes has been hot, he’s always hit right handers well and he should be hitting at the top of the lineup in a park which is lefty-friendly. If you can fit him in, I certainly would try.
J.D. Martinez | |||||||
Daily Breakdown | Avg | OPS | HR% | wOBA | |||

1.058 | 1.090 | $3,700 | $6,900 | $4,400 | $64,100 | $6,900 |
J.D. Martinez
The Tigers have been struggling a bit lately, but you have to like their chances tonight against Noesi. They have a 4.5 over under at home and are huge favorites with Scherzer taking the hill. Noesi has allowed a .871 OPS to right handed batters this year and generally hasn’t been able to get them out at all which is what the Tiger’s lineup is made almost entirely of. Martinez has some absurd splits that aren’t sustainable but the 1.010 OPS vs righties and the low price definitely puts him in a good spot today.

$3,400 | $8,850 | $4,600 | $78,000 | $9,200 |
Carlos Beltran
Beltran isn’t a top price either on this night but has one of the highest upsides due to Lewis having one of the biggest downsides. It’s been a while since I’ve seen an 11 ER outing by a pitcher, but I guess Ron Washington had enough confidence in a horrid Lewis that night to allow that. Lewis just hasn’t been good at all. Beltran is having a disappointing season but is turning it on right now and hits righties very well.

Austin Jackson
I noted above how terrible Noesi has been against right handers this year and this just plays right into Jackson’s wheelhouse. For his career he has always hit righties better than lefties and had a higher OBP and OPS as well. His price shot up high on FD but it’s coming back down. He’s still leading off tonight and I think he gets a couple of knocks.

Brett Gardner
Still very cheap for the way he has been producing, I really don’t see a way to keep him out of my lineups tonight. Lewis as noted above has been just absolutely terrible and I’m definitely targeting the Yankees lefties tonight. Gardner has 7 hits in 2 games with 3 HR and a .861 OPS against right handers this year and will look to keep it going tonight against an awful Colby Lewis.

Melky Cabrera
Melky had one of those games the other night where if you had him you likely won and if you didn’t, you likely lost. He’s hot right now and has hit righties really well this year with an .860 OPS. Melky is definitely the guy to have a monster game and has a great chance hitting left handed against Workman tonight in Fenway Park. He is a bit pricy, but if you can find the right bargain play I can definitely see him being used.
