MLB Big Events: Recapping the MSC, DFBC Qualifier

The Midsummer Classic took place last night on DraftKings, which paid out a cool $100K to 1st place. Several of our members finished towards the top of the leaderboard, with naapstermaan nearly repeating as the MSC champion. The Medium Midsummer Classic also had a six-figure prize-pool, and paid out $20K to 1st place. MLB connoisseur lovesbases secured his 3rd DFBC seat in the $535 Q, with some other notable names finishing in the top-ten. Let’s get to the tournament breakdowns!

Greg072000 took down last night’s Midsummer Classic in dominating fashion, outscoring 2nd place by more then 25 FP’s. This was his one and only entry into this tournament (and he stayed away from stacking), which makes his 1st place finish that much more impressive. He didn’t have more then one offensive player from a particular team, but was able to get huge production out of every lineup spot (with the exception being a 0 from Dayan Viciedo). Greg rolled with two rookie hurlers on the hill (Jimmy Nelson and Kyle Hendricks), with the lesser owned of the two (Hendricks) shutting out the Cubs in 7 innings. Jonathan Lucroy (28 FP’s) and Jose Reyes (29 FP’s) were his two biggest contributors, and neither player was owned by more then 3.9% of the field. This has started a discussion on whether or not stacking is the optimal GPP strategy on DK, but the bottom line is if you hit big on all but one of your bats, you’re going to do well regardless. Outside of Viciedo, not one of his hitters had less then 16 FP’s, which is pretty incredible. Dice7117 was the 2nd place finisher in this one, and he also was working with just one bullet in a very big field. Like the 1st place finisher, he also didn’t run out a team stack, but he did roll out three Blue Jays (Jose Reyes being the best of the bunch) as well as three Yankees. After taking this tournament down last year, naapstermaan was the 3rd place finisher this year. The guy is a multi-entry machine and it’s never surprising to see him at or near the top of any GPP leaderboard. He was one of the few people willing to take the chance on Moose Tacos (Mike Moustakas), who homered twice and finished with a whopping 33 FP’s. Another strong effort from Jacob deGrom made the difference for his pitching staff. In addition to his 3rd place entry, The Panda also registered 7th and 9th place finishes. Hoffytime (aka hoff211) was our only other member in the top-ten. Here’s the lineup that took down the $100K 1st prize:

Bobnot was the leading RG member in the Medium Midsummer Classic, finishing 3rd with four Cubs and a Kazmir/deGrom pitching staff. Neil Walker big game (27 FP’s) also catapulted him up the leaderboard. Jdubadubs finished tied for 5th place with a Kazmir/Odorizzi pitching staff, but he was carried by a few of his big bats. Gregory Polanco exploded for his first big game in awhile, totaling 27 FP’s, while Jonathan Lucroy and Ike Davis each put up at least 24 FP’s. SuperShiny, crackmonkey83 and jordanh415 also finished in the top-ten.

Already the owner of two DFBC entries before last night, lovesbases earned his 3rd seat into the multi-million dollar final on Tuesday. His score of 59 was just over 6 FP’s better then 2nd place, thanks to a huge night from 2% owned Buster Posey (4 hits, 1 HR). Jacob deGrom and Adam LaRoche were the other two big contributors to his 3rd DFBC seat, each owned by less then 15% of the field. Cornfins was the 2nd place finisher in this one, led by 2% owned (and minimum priced) Ike Davis and his 3 hit, 2 RBI effort (including a HR). Brett Gardner and Alexei Ramirez also helped to pave the way to his 2nd place finish. TheClone, TrentSteele, ganondorf, Al_Smizzle and TommyG1979 also finished in the top-ten.
