Welcome to the recap of Game 2 of the high stakes series between BrettFavre444 and STLCardinals84. This was one of the most bizarre days I’ve ever had in daily fantasy sports, so let’s get to it!

Before I start, I would like to clear up just a couple of things: I sincerely apologize if the first column came across with the wrong tone. My intent is not to be overly arrogant or put anyone else down. Also, it’s extremely difficult to write about your own contests with an unbiased perspective — but I am going to do my best to be super-objective here. Again, sorry if anything here comes across the wrong way. The goal of this is to benefit YOU, the reader.

The Short Attention Span Version:

I never got comfortable with my DS rosters today and it showed in the results. Favre rebounded from a disappointing opener and won by 15 points to even up the series at 1-1.

Breaking Down My Lineup:

1) I thought the pricing on DS was really solid today and that made it really hard to figure out where to start. Matt Holliday and Everth Cabrera were my first two picks as I felt both guys were available at extreme values and were two of the best plays of the night at their prices.

2) I went super-heavy on Baltimore/Toronto in my GPP play so I hedged a bit and avoided the game in cash games. This was a big mistake on my end today. For my top-end plays I chose Miggy after his big game on Tuesday against another poor pitcher, Jay Bruce against Charlie Morton and the Pirates, and Longoria against the gas can Mike Pelfrey.

3) I transitioned to the pitcher spots from here and went mid-range with all three picks. Again, this was another misplay from me tonight. I chose Masterson for the perceived value price, Tyson Ross due to his hot start and impressive stuff in the early part of the season, and Odorizzi as a punt option against a weak offense.

4) The rest of my hitters were not necessarily guys I really liked and I am disappointed with the group I put together. Looking back on it, I can’t really justify why I picked the group that I did. I did like the matchups for Joyce and Craig, but Pierzynski and Phillips were poor choices.

Breaking Down Favre’s Lineup:

1) The only difference in our pitchers was that he took Greinke instead of Ross and saved a bit on his bats. This was a smart play and something I should have definitely done myself.

2) Favre made sure to have some exposure to the games with the highest totals of the night, taking four players from the two highest projected scoring games (BAL/TOR and BOS/NYY). This was a smart play from him and became a solid advantage. This is where I really whiffed tonight.

3) He also made a solid pick in Bryce Harper against a declining Jered Weaver at an extreme discount. I totally missed his value price on DS today.

How The Game Played Out:

1) I had to root against myself. As I mentioned above, I went heavy on TOR/BAL (and Greinke) in my GPP contests tonight. Every positive that Favre had from those guys was a boost for me in a GPP lineup. The performances of guys like Chris Davis and Greinke helped propel me to 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 12th in the FanDuel Monster tournament. Since those tournaments paid me more of a payout than this series, and I also still have a chance to win this series, I had no problem rooting against myself for one night here.

2) Favre flat out picked a better DraftStreet team than me tonight and it showed. Taking Greinke was a must, Harper was a solid pick even though it didn’t pan out, and his team was just constructed as a better overall squad. On a night where neither of us scored very highly, Greinke was a mammoth difference. He outscored Ross by 14 points and that was basically the difference in our overall scores.

3) Neither of us had big days with the bats. Bruce was solid for me and Davis was good for him, but as I just mentioned the difference in the game was him using Greinke over Ross and finding a few more values with his bats. At the end of the day, this is now a best-of-five series.

FINAL SCOREFAVRE 53.91, CARDS 38.91. SERIES TIED 1-1.
