  • Grinders Rankings Update 5/17: Movement In The Top 3

    alt

There wasn’t a drastic amount of movement this week among the Grinders, so this rankings update will be brief. Nonetheless, the players who were able to make moves did so impressively. The week in rankings can be summarized with four new players on the leaderboard, two double-digit leaps, and one player moving his way up in the top ten. The week in sports can be summarized by a fairly uneventful Conference Semifinals so far in the NBA, an intriguing set up of NHL Conference Finals and the typical ebbs and flows of the long MLB season. So without further ado, here are your Grinder Rankings top headliners of the week. Read More

  • NHL Playoff Preview and DraftStreet Picks

The regular season has come to an end, but the fantasy hockey action continues, at least for a little while, on Draftstreet. Draftstreet moves into 2-day game mode with the playoff schedule down to 3 or 4 games a night. Your first chance to get in on the action is Wednesday/Thursday, with 7 of the 8 series in play. Today’s playoff preview will briefly spotlight each matchup and offer the Top Target and Best Value for each of the 16 playoff squads. (Read More)

What has been a fantastic 2011-2012 regular season will come to an end tonight. All 16 playoff spots have now been claimed, but most of the first round playoff matchups are still up in the air. Every single NHL team is in action which makes for a fantasy hockey dream. For the last time this season, let’s look at the best daily plays. Good luck and we’ll see you again next October. • NHL Thursday: Teams to Target on DS

    alt

Only 2 teams sit idle tonight, so you basically have a whole league worth of players from which to pick when setting your lineup on Draftstreet tonight. You could diversify and take the best dollar-per-point value you can with each spot, or you can stack a team or two. Better yet, do both. With mulit-entries allowed in the GPP and NHL nights running short, be sure to jump in early and often tonight. Here are my picks for teams to target this evening if you’re looking to stack up a line or two. (Read More)

The baseball season is officially upon us, but we still have a few great days of NHL action before its Second Season begins. As mentioned on Tuesday, we know that you’ll be tempted to play with your new, shiny, baseball shaped toy on, but it may be a mistake to overlook this NHL schedule. We have one of the busiest schedules of the year, with 14 games to choose from. The NHL may do its NBA impression on Thursday, with a handful of late scratches and questionable injury reports likely to surface throughout the day now that most teams have sealed their fate. Let’s make some picks, but remember to stay alert throughout the day. (Read More)

For many, today will be their last day playing the daily NHL until next fall. You see, while the NHL graces us with a meaty 10-game dockets tonight, they will be competing head-to-head with opening weekend baseball action on Thursday and Saturday. I have a feeling a few of you will get distracted by the shiny new object. Don’t. Which season do you understand better at this point – 2011-12 NHL or 2012 MLB? Stick with the gal that brought you this far. The MLB will still happily accept you next week…and keep you busy until the NHL comes back. And remember, keep your stick on the ice. Pick time! We’re officially into the NHL’s silly season. Just five postseason tickets remain and there isn’t a whole lot for many teams to play for. You’ll see defense getting a little lax and the scores tend to creep upward. Sunday officially begins the final week of the season and the schedule the rest of the way is not exactly what Grinders would like to see. Monday, Wednesday and Friday have a combined total of 5 games, while Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday have packed slates. So, Daily Plays will be working only part time in the final week. Enjoy these picks, and we’ll see you again on Tuesday. (Read More)

The Regular season ends in exactly one week and nearly all of the upcoming playoff matchups are still unclear. With 24 teams in action, we should see more clarity by the time the final horn sounds in San Jose later tonight. The schedule is ideal for daily fantasy hockey so let’s check out today’s best options. (Read More)

Pucks will drop in eight cities on Friday Night and we’ve said it before, but several of tonight’s games will surely have that β€œplayoff” atmosphere. The headliner of the night is a battle at β€œThe Joe” between the Predators and Red Wings and is almost certainly a preview of an epic first round playoff battle. (Read More)

  • NHL Thursday: DraftStreet Top 10 Forwards Under $10k

    alt

10 spots. $100k to spend. Simple math tells you that on average, you need to spend 10k per player to make cap. Of course, goaltenders chew up a little extra (you’ll rarely find a decent option under 20k), so right away, you’re behind. On average, a decent forward will run you 11k or more, which leaves you scrambling to break even. Since you have no choice but to settle for a few options below the 10k line, I’m here to help. So, with just over 1 week left in the regular season, I’ll deliver fresh to you the top 10 forwards on Draftstreet under 10k. (Read More)

Thursday is usually a pretty busy day for the NHL, but the league only offers us 7 games to choose from. That’s plenty of players to insure quality daily fantasy action, so it’s all good. The amazing part about the end of this season is that with only a week and change to play, less than half of the tickets to the playoffs have been spoken for. I’d imagine we’ll get some more clarity after tonight’s action with several playoff hopefuls involved. (Read More)

Wednesday’s usually leave the NHL taking a backseat to their NBA counterparts, but this 6 game NHL schedule has some very interesting match-ups. With so many close playoff races still up for grabs, each game on the schedule is important to at least one team involved. Let’s get to the picks. (Read More)

Tuesday’s 8-game set of fixtures features a quite a few meetings of the haves and the have nots. Boston hosts Tampa. New York travels to Minnesota. Pittsburgh hosts the Islanders. See what I mean? The rest of the games have the look and feel of playoff games. Especially noteworthy is the bout between the Preds and Blues. Let’s make some picks. (Read More)

We’re less than two weeks away from the end of the regular season and yet STILL only five teams have clinched their playoff berths. For roughly half of the NHL, the next 6-7 games on their schedule have essentially become playoff games now. 11 of the 12 teams in action on Monday are either looking to improve their playoff position or make a late push for one of the last playoff spots (meanwhile, Columbus is just looking to improve their tee-times). Let’s take a look at the best fantasy options. (Read More)

The NHL regular season enters its final fortnight with a 7-game package for daily fantasy players to feast upon. There will be goals today as several teams will turn to backup netminders after also being in action last night. Games start mid-afternoon and will wrap up around midnight, so let’s make a few picks, then get comfortable and stack some fantasy points like cord wood. (Read More)

The NHL provided us an early night last night, so some of the more dedicated grinders may have gotten off to a head start with their research. Luckily for you, if you’re not one of those dedicated grinders, I’ve done a lot of the research for you. Although it’s not necessarily because i’m dedicated (i’m not), but more-so due to living with small children who are finally sleeping. Just grab a glass of water, three Tylenol, and some greasy food and “get your read on”. You’re welcome (jerks). (Read More)

It’s Friday – time to crack into a sixer and get the weekend going. While you might be interested in breaking open a sixer of a fine lager or pilsner, I’m more interested in the sixer that the NHL has put on ice for us this evening. Every game is on the East coast tonight, so get your lineups together and take a short 3-hour trip through NHL daily fantasy. We’ll leave the midnight heartbreaking to the NBA and NCAA tonight. • NHL Thursday: Who's Hot? Who's Not?

    alt

Unfortunately, there is no absolute magic formula when it comes to predicting player production on a nightly basis, but one obvious factor to consider is who’s hot right now, and who’s cold. Both success and failure often comes in bunches for NHL players and it’s important to know the trends. Let’s start with the good news: (Read More)

The majority of the sports world will once again refocus their attention towards college hoops, but the NHL action is starting to border on β€œmadness”. Happy humpday hockey nuts. The NBA tends to take center stage on Wednesdays, but the NHL brings a 5-game slate to give puckheads the fix we crave. Just 2 1/2 weeks remain in the regular season and virtually everyone is jockeying for playoff position. Injuries are mounting for some team which open up some opportunities for under-appreciated 3rd liners to become fantasy difference makers. Let’s discuss a few, shall we? (Read More)
