  • NHL Thursday: DraftStreet $500 GPP Lineup and Picks

    alt

We’re a week into the NHL season and we’ve gotten the first glimpse at who is off to a great start. The question to ponder is whether we should trust this as a sign of a great season to come, or in some cases, is this just a fluke? As we look into the early studs, you’ll need to consider whether to run with them in the next few weeks as you set your rosters on Draftstreet. (Read More)

  • Daily Fantasy Football Strategy: Spending Wisely

    alt

Fantasy football is different from all other fantasy sports. In baseball, you have daily statistics that you can rely on to make your decisions with the biggest emphasis being on hitters’ matchups with pitchers. Then in basketball you can easily tell who has good matchups by looking at team defenses and who each player is going to guard. Then in hockey you can look up matchups as well as +/- for the team. And then we have fantasy football which is unlike other fantasy sports because there is no easy way to determine which players to pick each week. (Read More)

  • Blinders Projects NFL Week 5

    alt

He’s not going to give all of his secrets away, but this week Blinders was kind enough to share his NFL Week 5 projections for Running Back and Wide Receiver for the RotoGrinders community! Blinders has been improving his projections for multiple seasons now, and they have proved valuable to Blinders, as evidenced by his 71-10 start using them in 2010. Blinders prefers to wait until Week 5 to begin participating in Daily Fantasy NFL, and discusses this topic in his Early Season Fantasy NFL Strategy piece on RotoGrinders from 2010. A big shout out goes to Blinders for allowing us to share these to the RG Community for Week 5! (Read More)

  • Calculating Individual Overlay Value in Large Field Fantasy Leagues

    alt

From time to time entries in large field fantasy leagues come up short of what the site was expecting, and provide some extra value called an overlay. There are a couple of different ways to define what an overlay is. In the example of online poker, an overlay happens when the number of entries falls short of building the guaranteed prize amount. This does not necessarily mean that the poker site is losing money on the tournament. Let me explain. Let’s say you have a 10,000 guarantee tournament with a $10+1 entry. The $10 goes into the prize pool, and the $1 is the rake. It will take 1,000 entries for the prize pool to build to the guarantee amount. At 990 entries there is a $100 overlay, and the site will earn $990 in rake. The overlay in this case comes out of the rake earned, and the site still makes $890 for running the tournament. The overlay simply increased the payout percentage. Now if that same tournament only received 800 entries, there would be a $2000 overlay, and $800 in rake. The site would lose $1,200 by running the tournament and I would call this situation a “pure overlay” where the site is actually paying the players to enter the tournament. An overlay should appeal to most profitable players, while a pure overlay can appeal to all players, but I will get to that later. (Read More)

  • NFL Week 5: Players to Watch For

    alt

Another great week is in the books for the NFL. And the one thing about the NFL that makes it so different from other sports is that the NFL doesn’t have to create drama, it just happens. This past week we had the Cowboys appear to have a strangle-hold on the undefeated Lions being up 27-3 in the third quarter. It had everyone, even the announcers, saying that this year is different for the Cowboys. They must have forgotten that the Cowboys still have Tony Romo. While I like the guy, he just doesn’t seem to have that killer instinct that great quarterbacks have. First he gives up a pick six to his best man at his wedding, then he gives up another pick six, and then when the Cowboys are hanging on for dear life with a lead of only 3, he throws another pick to set up the Lions game winning drive. • Initial Thoughts: Week 5 Value Plays

    alt

Initial Thoughts: Week 5 Value PlaysWith Monday Night Football being reserved for the Colts in back-to-back weeks, it’s safe to turn our fantasy radar towards the upcoming week. While sites do update their players’ salaries weekly based on performance, it’s still possible to predict value plays before they emerge…some sites easier than other. FSL uses season-long averages to determine player pricing, making spotting an up-and-coming player for value a simple task for the seasoned veteran. You have sites like FanDuel, whose salaries are generally delayed a couple weeks making spotting value a combination of art and science each week. Then you have your sites like DraftStreet where the player pricing models update very quickly, making spotting value a bit trickier, but still have some extreme outliers (see Damian Williams in Week 4). This week brought not only its usual share of injuries to stars with Andre Johnson and Big Ben going down, among others, but also presented opportunities for players like Steven Ridley and Ryan Torain to work their way up the depth chart. Looking forward to Week 5, here are some notable value plays to keep an eye on, along with their Week 4 FanDuel price tags: (Read More)

  • MLB Season in Review: Lessons Learned & Tuesday MLB Lineup

    alt

With only two more days in the regular season, I figure this will be my last article on baseball and what better way to end it than to give a review of the year. Being my first year of fantasy baseball, there were plenty of “learning experiences” that were a little more expensive than I would have liked. Here are just a few lessons learned the hard way: (Read More)

  • Initial Thoughts on Week 4 Value Plays

    alt

Week 3 of the NFL season was a much-needed reminder that just when you think you can predict the NFL, it’s time to give yourself a Lee Corso: “Eh! Not so Fast!”? Noone can predict injuries on a week-to-week basis (I don’t care what they tell you). Those who went with one of the best up-and-coming WRs in the league this week, were out of luck when 23 year old Kenny Britt tore his ACL/MCL (still waiting on official results) early Sunday. Somehow, his aging QB, Matt Hasselback, still threw for 331 yards and 2 TDs on the day. The Giants defense, which suffered injury-after-injury this off-season, stuffed the top daily fantasy QB of last season, sending Mike Vick home with just 176 yards, 0 TDs, a pick, and a broken hand, while the Dream Team took another loss on the season. On Sunday, we saw staple RBs Frank Gore leave the game and Mike Turner come up with just 20 yards on 11 carries vs. the Bucs’ rush D which gave up 120 to Adrian Peterson the week before. You just can’t predict these results, and if you think you can, please send me a link to your lineup with Torrey Smith of the Ravens in it, and I’ll give you a shout out in my next column. But all is not lost! In daily fantasy, injuries and poor play often lead to an opportunity for a value play to step up next week. Here are the emerging players from Week 3 I have my eye on heading into Week 4: (Read More)

  • Long-term vs. Lifetime Profitability in Large Field Daily Fantasy Leagues

    alt

I wanted to take the opportunity to explain the difference between long-term profitable and lifetime profitable as it relates to large field fantasy sports leagues. To be lifetime profitable, it means that for a specific large field structure you are currently profitable after all of your trials. This does not mean for a second that you are long-term profitable. Long-term profitable means that if you were to continue playing the same large field league over and over again and made it to the “long-term” you would still be lifetime profitable. So what exactly is long-term for a large field fantasy league? (Read More)

  • Notoriously Full Lineup Tuesday

    alt

In the spirit of the season coming to an end, I am going to do something a little different today: I am going to share with you my entire MLB team for Draftstreet today! Normally, I like to provide PvB plays, sleeper picks, or even a GPP team once in a while. But I have never given out my whole team because if I did that then I would have absolutely zero advantage. But since I have been on a roll lately and we only have one week left, I figure why not. So hopefully this can help anyone looking to put together a team today or even just looking for a few good picks. [takes deep breath] Here we go: (Read More)

  • Monday BVP: FanDuel Rankings

    alt

Well, this weekend of football was crazy to say the least; Did anyone else have one of their NFL keepers not even finish their Week 2 game!? How about two!? If you lost three or more, than you have me beat. Any less than three, then we’re in the same boat (RIP 2011 breakout superstar Jamaal Charles). But this column wasn’t scribed to dwell on my fantasy RB losses, actually, it’s not even about fantasy football. • So, You Had a Bad Day

    alt

You may or may not believe it, but sooner or later, this daily fantasy game is going to smack you around a little. Take a look at that glorious table to the right. Yeah, that’s my league summary on Draftstreet from Monday night. It’s ugly. Not a single cash in the bunch. Oh sure, the 3/10 on row two looks like a cash, until you see that it was my free league where I was testing a different lineup. It sure was nice of that team to produce a few StreetCreds. It almost makes up for the $253 in lost entry fees. Almost. (Read More)

  • Tuesday’s MLB Pitcher vs. Batter Plays

    alt

Shane Victorino (vs. J.A. Happ): Victorino is also a guys that hits lefties well. This year he is batting .327 against lefties. Happ certainly isn’t a pitcher that scares away any hitters with a 5.77 ERA on the season. Look for Victorino to have a big day in the leadoff spot for the Phillies. The Phillies have a good matchup like the Yankees, so load up on the Phils if you can. (Read More)
