Andrelton Simmons scratched Saturday; David Fletcher replaces

Simmons has been scratched from the Los Angeles Angels original confirmed lineup and will not start in the Saturday’s matchup against the Minnesota Twins due to a presently unspecified reason. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by David Fletcher, who will now play shortstop and slot into the leadoff spot in the order, which shuffles quite a few players around in the Angels batting order but, most notably, slides Luis Rengifo all the way down to ninth, respectively. Therefore, be sure to double-check the Starting Lineups page for the updated lineup as Los Angeles faces off against right-hander Adam Plutko on the road this evening.

Angels are the best stack option on late afternoon slate vs. struggling Kikuchi

If you’re playing the late afternoon slate you’ll certainly want some exposure to Angels bats, as the Angels have the highest total with the best matchup on the slate. They’ll face Yusei Kikuchi, who has struggled to a 5.48 ERA, 5.43 xFIP and 5.44 SIERA with a 6.9% K-BB over the past 30 days. He’s also allowed a .363 xwOBA and 89.2 MPH aEV over that time frame. Over his 98 career innings, Kikuchi has shown a pretty wide platoon split, with a .308 xwOBA allowed vs. left-handed batters compared to a .352 xwOBA allowed vs. righties. Mike Trout (.432 xwOBA vs. LHP on the year), Albert Pujols (.368), David Fletcher (.331), Luis Rengifo (.315), Andrelton Simmons (.268) and Justin Upton (career 129 wRC+ vs. LHP) are all right-handed options in the LAA projected order. Kole Calhoun (.375) and Shohei Ohtani (.350) are also in play. Trout has been by far the Angels’ hottest bat with a scorching .499 xwOBA over the past 30 days, followed by Ohtani with a .387 mark. While Ohtani and Trout are both well over $5k on Draftkings, Fletcher, Upton, Simmons and Pujols are all projected in the top 6 of the order and can be had for $4.1k or less. The Angels currently have a 6.01 implied line vs. Kikuchi and the M’s this afternoon.

Angels once again a great stack option

The Angels only managed two runs last night in a great matchup vs. Mike Fiers, but we can confidently go back to them again tonight in a matchup vs. Brett Anderson. Anderson has a 4.26 ERA / 5.13 xFIP / 5.43 SIERA so far on the season with a 3.6% K-BB, 7.7% SwStr and 41.2% hard contact rate. Even worse, he’s allowed a .360 xwOBA with an 89 MPH aEV on the year. The Angels have the 3rd hottest offense in baseball over the past 30 days with a 117 wRC+ and have a lineup full of options tonight vs. Anderson. Mike Trout (.488 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Albert Pujols (.386), Kole Calhoun (.352), Tommy La Stella (.338), David Fletcher (.337), Shohei Ohtani (.325) and Justin Upton (.307 xwOBA vs. LHP since 2018) are all in play. Andrelton Simmons (.269) is also in play. Trout has been their hottest hitter with a .451 xwOBA over the past 14 days, followed by Upton with a .404 xwOBA. Pujols, Simmons, Upton and Fletcher are all available for $4.1k or less on Draftkings. Fletcher is especially intriguing as he is projected to leadoff, while Upton projects to bat 4th. The Angels have a solid 5.16 implied line tonight vs. Anderson and the A’s.

Angels Have Highest Total on Board Tonight Vs. Junis

With Ohtani back in the lineup, Tommy La Stella raking and Mike Trout being Mike Trout, the Angels suddenly have a dangerous lineup and have a 5.42 implied total vs. Junis and the Royals tonight. Junis is enduring a rough year which has seen him post a 5.77 ERA / 4.64 xFIP / 4.72 SIERA with a 40.6% hard contact rate. Junis also has a .358 xwOBA allowed, a 89.5 aEV and a 9.7% barrel rate. Since 2018, Junis has been platoon neutral (.338 xwOBA vs. LHB, .335 xwOBA vs. RHB) and can be targeted from both sides of the plate tonight. Mike Trout (.452 xwOBA vs. RHP since 2018), Shohei Ohtani (.434), Tommy La Stella (.348), Kole Calhoun (.338), Brian Goodwin (.323) and Andrelton Simmons (.316) are all in play tonight. Tommy La Stella has been the Angels’ hottest hitter with a .469 xwOBA over the past 10 days, followed by Mike Trout (.411) and Shohei Ohtani (.394).

Value Here Vs. SP Making 2019 Debut

Danny Duffy is making his debut tonight vs. the Angels after missing the start of 2019 with a shoulder injury. Duffy appeared in 155 innings in 2018, giving up a 4.88 ERA / 4.92 xFIP / 4.75 SIERA. Duffy was bad vs. RHP in 2018 with a .344 wOBA allowed, but much better vs. LHB with a .284 wOBA allowed. Fortunately, the Angels project to use 7 RHB vs. Duffy tonight, who is not likely to have his best stuff tonight as he shakes off the rust. Mike Trout (.412 xwOBA vs. LHP since 2018), Kevan Smith (.400), Brian Goodwin (.343, just 44 PA), Kole Calhoun (.343), Albert Pujols (.321) and Andrelton Simmons (.315) project to be in the Angels’ lineup and are all in play. With the exception of Mike Trout, all the aforementioned players are available for $4.2k or less on Draftkings. Kevan Smith is an intriguing play at just $3.4k given his success vs. LHP, he also owns a .435 xwOBA over the past 10 days. The Angels have a 4.64 implied total vs. Duffy and the Royals tonight.

Nice Contact Quality

While Andrelton Simmons may not hit 50 home runs per game, he will certainly be an on base machine. This is what we are expecting tonight as he faces off with Mr. Kikuchi. He has a 91.4% contact rate and of course is striking out at a very low clip. Simmons has proven over a number of seasons that he's going to play great defense, and be extremely disciplined at the plate. For fantasy purposes, we don't care about the defense, but hitting is good too. (I believe I got that from the Legend Cheeseisgood)

Value in LAA Lineup

If you’re looking for salary relief, there are many cheap bats in the Angels’ lineup Friday night. They face Marco Gonzales, who has been hard to read this year with an ugly 5.08 xFIP / 4.99 SIERA but an impressive .271 xwOBA allowed and an ERA of just 3.19. Gonzales has been much worse on the road for his career with a .337 xwOBA on the road versus a .304 xwOBA at home. Despite an implied total of 4.59 tonight vs. Gonzalez, Mike Trout is the only hitter in the Angels’ lineup that has a price greater than $3.7k. David Fletcher is probably the best value play here, he’ll lead off and had a .319 xwOBA vs. LHP last year. Andrelton Simmons hits 3rd and had a .284 xwOBA vs. LHP last year, Albert Pujols will follow him in the order and had a .327 xwOBA vs. LHP. Further down, Kole Calhoun will not have the platoon advantage but had a solid .333 xwOBA vs. LHP and bats 7th. Mike Trout doesn’t count as a value play with a price above $5k, but is always in play especially vs. LHP.

Don't Sleep On This West Coast Offense

The Angels are one of my favorite sneaky stacks on this slate, and they are definitely capable of doing damage against Mike Fiers. While Fiers had success at times last year, he doesn't fit the profile of an Opening Day starter, and the Angels have a nice combination of high upside (Trout, Upton), and affordable potential (Simmons, Bour) in their lineup. I'll happily be overweight on all these bats, especially in GPP stacking situations against a pitcher that allowed hard contact almost 40% of the time in 2018.

Empty lineup, but a great park

Jeffrey Springs makes his first major league start tonight and his first at any level since A-ball last season. He's exceeded 40 pitches in just two of his outings with a high of 51. It will be a bullpen effort for the Rangers and that bullpen does have a 15.7 K-BB% over the last month, but a 4.80 FIP and a terrible park. The Angels have a 5.15 run line that's third best on the board, but Mike Trout (188 wRC+, .292 ISO vs LHP this season) is surrounded by AAA bats with Ohtani and Upton on the bench. Kole Calhoun (74 wRC+, .104 ISO), David Fletcher (68 wRC+, .091 ISO) and Andrelton Simmons (124 wRC+, .145 ISO) fill out the top half of this lineup. All are fine plays in this environment and only likely to face the lefty once. Keep an eye out for Kevin's upcoming forecast tonight for potential weather issues in this game.

Usually I don't like stacking against pitchers with low walk rates, today I make an exception

The argument for stacking against Colon has been an interesting one throughout the DFS community for the past couple years.. The ownership is usually high and stacking against a pitcher who almost never walks anyone is usually a bad idea.. However the massive power Colon allows (especially to righties) coupled with 93 degree heat, a 13% k rate and a lousy, beat up bullpen behind him are just a few reasons I love the Angels stack tonight.. Colon has a allowed a .291 ISO to righties this year and these Angels have always hit him hard. Especially Pujols and Simmons. Coming off a big game I expect LAA to be fairly popular but there are so many good stacks I don't think they will carry the ownership they should. I love everyone in this lineup 1 through 9 as one offs, a full or mini stack.. I will ride or die with the Angels of Anaheim today and I suggest you do the same.
