Daniel Murphy Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Daniel Murphy (143 wRC+) sits in the middle of top projected lineup at a reasonable price

Logan Webb has struck out just six of the 38 batters he’s faced, despite a 10.1 SwStr%, while walking five, only allowing two earned runs in 7.2 innings against the Dodgers and Rangers. He had average peripherals in a small cup of coffee last year (4.45 SIERA), but a concerning contact profile (.355 xwOBA). Through two starts this year, he’s at a .482 xwOBA. The Colorado lineup has a stars and scrubs profile with the top half being where all the action is and the bottom half occasionally useful at Coors. Webb has struggled against batters from either side of the plate in his short career with both above a .370 xwOBA. The most interesting batter from a price perspective here may be Daniel Murphy. While he has just an 83 wRC+ vs RHP since signing with the Rockies, he looks to be healthier this year and has a 143 wRC+ overall. Murphy is likely essential to Colorado stacks (6.6 implied runs) at a reasonable cost of $3.5K on FanDuel tonight.

Majority of Rockies’ lineup is priced affordably despite playing in Coors

On both major sites tonight, Rockies bats are pretty affordable despite what looks to be a good matchup in Coors. With the exception of Trevor Story, Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado, all Rockies hitters are priced under $4.5k on Draftkings and under $3.5k on Fanduel. The Rockies will get a matchup with Joey Lucchesi who has had a decent year with a 3.84 ERA / 4.35 xFIP / 4.50 SIERA , 1.19 WHIP and 10.4% SwStr. Lucchesi had a pretty wide platoon split, as he’s allowed a .325 xwOBA to righties but just a .259 xwOBA to lefties in his career. Unfortunately for Lucchesi, 6 of 8 batters in the Rockies’ order are righties. Nolan Arenado (141 wRC+, .286 ISO vs. LHP this year), Ian Desmond (128 wRC+, .304 ISO), Daniel Murphy (122 wRC+, .194 ISO), Charlie Blackmon (118 wRC+, .254 ISO), Trevor Story (115 wRC+, .212 ISO), Pat Valaika (40 wRC+, .138 ISO), Garrett Hampson (26 wRC+, .093 ISO) and Drew Butera (117 wRC+ in AAA this year) are all possible options in the Rockies’ projected lineup for tonight. Ian Desmond has been their hottest hitter over the last 2 weeks with a .413 xwOBA. The Rockies currently have a healthy 6.25 implied total vs. Lucchesi and the Padres.

Rockies currently have an implied total above 7.5 vs. Agrazal in Coors

Over 49 big league innings this year, Agrazal has posted a 4.41 ERA, but with a 6.38 xFIP and 5.84 SIERA. He’s also posted a miniscule 11.9% K rate and 5.8% SwStr. While he has done a good job managing contact (5.5% barrel rate, 86.5 MPH aEV, .328 xwOBA on contact) lack of swing-and-miss stuff and reliance on a low BABIP is certainly not a sustainable approach in Coors. Once Agrazal is chased from the game, Rockies hitters will get at bats vs. a Pirates bullpen that has posted a below average .325 xwOBA over the past month. Charlie Blackmon (.360 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Trevor Story (.341), Ryan McMahon (.335), Nolan Arenado (.331), Daniel Murphy (.295), Ian Desmond (.293) and Tony Wolters (.279) are all in play tonight. Daniel Murphy has led the team over the past 2 weeks with a .393 xwOBA after struggling mightily for the majority of the year. Murphy comes at a discounted cost of just $4.5k on Draftkings. Nolan Arenado has also seen the ball well over the past 2 weeks with a .384 xwOBA. Ryan McMahon ($4.6k), Ian Desmond ($4.3k), Sam Hilliard ($4k) and Tony Wolters ($3.5k) also look like nice values for tonight’s matchup. The Rockies currently have a 7.61 implied total.

Massive Game Total Offers Tons of Upside

Despite throwing six shutout innings in his last start, Trevor Williams still owns a 7.21 ERA since the beginning of June -- and now he has to pitch at Coors Field. Look out. Coors is the obvious spot to go for offense tonight, with both teams owning implied team totals over seven runs. We have two bad pitchers going, and an explosion feels imminent. Given the struggles of Trevor Williams, I'll give a slight lean toward the Colorado side. Give me Blackmon as the top overall bat against a bad righty, as Blackmon owns a .424 wOBA, .252 ISO, and 1.009 OPS for his career against RHP at Coors. You can't go wrong with offense in this game tonight, but Blackmon is my first priority, and I love the Colorado GPP stack.

Alcantara has slate-worst 5.99 SIERA over past 30 days (min. 20 IP) coming into Coors start tonight

Over the past 30 days, Alcantara has a 6.35 ERA, 6.43 xFIP and 5.99 SIERA with a 5.7% K-BB. For the year he now owns a 4.44 ERA with a 5.58 xFIP and 5.66 SIERA as his ERA slowly regresses towards his peripherals after outpitching them for most of the season. Alcantara’s “contact manager” style might work in pitcher-friendly Marlins park, but the lack of swing and miss stuff (16.8% K rate) and lack of control (11.1% BB rate) is much less likely to work in Coors where he’ll have much less fortune on balls in play. Also working in Rockies’ hitters favor is that the Marlins have posted a 2nd worst .351 xwOBA allowed out of the bullpen in the past month. Charlie Blackmon (.363 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Trevor Story (.342), Ryan McMahon (.335), Nolan Arenado (.322), Raimel Tapia (.306) and Ian Desmond (.294) are all good options in the projected order. Charlie Blackmon has been their hottest hitter with a .436 xwOBA over the past 14 days, followed by Trevor Story with a .403 mark. Tapia, McMahon, and Desmond are all $4.7k or less on Draftkings. Daniel Murphy is just $4.1k and projects to hit towards the front of the order, but has just a .280 xwOBA on the year vs. RHP. The Rockies currently have a healthy 7.67 implied total.

Lefty Slugger In Prime Spot

It feels weird to be writing up Daniel Murphy as a core play, but the stars align here. For one, he's cheap across the industry and gives you access to the Rockies, who have the highest implied team total on this slate without breaking the bank. Secondly, it's likely he bats cleanup. Thirdly, he faces Sandy Alcantara, who has allowed 11 of his 16 homers this season to lefties. There are no shortage of good 1st basemen on this slate, but several of my favorite ones are in tougher matchups (Rhys Hoskins vs Chris Paddack, C.J. Cron vs Mike Minor, Paul Goldschmidt vs Luis Castillo). With these factors in mind, I'm viewing Murphy as a strong play today where you can get Coors exposure and still have funds to pay up for pitching, which is a priority today.

The Obvious Spot Is The Right Spot

It doesn't get much better than two low strikeout pitchers squaring off at Coors Field. The only thing that makes it tough to load up are the high salaries, particularly on the Rockies side. But on FD, we've got a nice discount on David Dahl and Daniel Murphy to get access to the middle of the Rockies lineup. The Giants' Shaun Anderson has struck out just 12.8% of lefties with just a moderate ground ball lean and no sign that he's going to be able to limit hard contact.

Chalk Stack

If you’re looking to avoid high ownership, look elsewhere. The Colorado Rockies are currently expected to be the top owned team on Monday’s slate by a *wide* margin as SlateIQ lists their total projected ownership at 180%, followed by the San Francisco Giants (126%) and the Cincinnati Reds (69%). With this being the second game of a double-header it’s important to keep a close eye on the Rockies lineup as one of their studs could very well sit. Based on Game 1’s lineup it’s safe to assume that Daniel Murphy and Chris Iannetta will be in Game 2’s lineup.

We got a good glimpse of Coors field at it’s finest over the weekend as the Reds and Rockies combined for 45 total runs in their two-games on Saturday and Sunday. Due to the elevation and large outfield, Coors can wreak havoc on opposing pitchers of all skill-levels. Unfortunately for Dereck Rodriguez, he’s not a very talented pitcher and has struggled big time over 56.1 Big League injuries this year with a walk-rate (9.2%) that almost matches his strikeout rate (14.5%). There’s very little encouraging about Rodriguez and his numbers this season as the righty simply doesn’t miss bats and allows a ton of hard contact (45 Hard%).

Colorado hitters will be a core piece of cash game builds and can be used as building blocks in single-entry and 3-max tournaments. Due to expected high ownership it makes sense to take a stand against them in multi-entry tournaments that have a top heavy payout structure.

Daniel Murphy scratched Saturday; Mark Reynolds replaces

Murphy has been scratched from the Colorado Rockies original confirmed lineup and will not start in Saturday’s matchup against the San Diego Padres due to a presently unspecified reason. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Mark Reynolds, who will now play first base and slot into the seventh spot in the order, which shuffles quite a few players around in the Rockies batting order but, most notably, bumps Ian Desmond and Ryan McMahon up to fifth and sixth, respectively. Therefore, be sure to double-check the Starting Lineups page for the updated lineup as Colorado faces off against left-hander Eric Lauer at home this evening.

Merrill Kelly (6.73 DRA) and Antonio Senzatela (46.8% 95+ mph EV) should get mashed at Coors

Poor weather might be a reason to over-think things and attempt to fade Coors tonight, but Kevin mentions in his forecast that there hasn’t been a negative effect towards run scoring under these conditions and both of these pitchers are ripe for the pickings. Merrill Kelly has an 11.9 K% over the last month with a board worst .430 xwOBA. For the season, he has a 41.7 Z-O-Swing% and 6.73 DRA. Antonio Senzatela has allowed seven and eight runs to the Giants and Pirates over his last four starts and has just a 14.4 K% with a board high 46.8% 95+ mph EV for the season. These are two pitchers who may be hit hard under any weather conditions outside a tornado at Coors. This should remain a productive venue for offense tonight. Batters from either side of the plate have an xwOBA within two points of .380 against Kelly this season. Trevor Story (128 wRC+, .278 ISO vs RHP last calendar year), Nolan Arenado (107 wRC+, .225 ISO) and Daniel Murphy (111 wRC+, .184 ISO) are all above a 150 wRC+ over the last week. David Dahl (111 wRC+, .253 ISO) just misses that mark (139). Batters from either side of the plate have at least a .330 xwOBA against Senzatela over the last 12 months as well. The Diamondbacks are currently missing a few key bats, but that means they’ll be able to surround Eduardo Escobar (121 wRC+, .259 ISO) with some more affordable bats tonight.
