Ian Desmond Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

The Easiest Way To Get In Play

The Coors Field game is at the top of the charts tonight, but the big bats for both teams are appropriately priced and tough to fit. Enter Ian Desmond, who comes at a fraction of the cost of teammates Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story, as well as Pete Alonso and Michael Conforto on the other side. While Desmond isn't the same caliber of hitter overall, against lefties, he can compete with those bigger names. His .297 ISO and 41% hard hits against LHP make him look underpriced in comparison to the rest of this game.

Majority of Rockies’ lineup is priced affordably despite playing in Coors

On both major sites tonight, Rockies bats are pretty affordable despite what looks to be a good matchup in Coors. With the exception of Trevor Story, Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado, all Rockies hitters are priced under $4.5k on Draftkings and under $3.5k on Fanduel. The Rockies will get a matchup with Joey Lucchesi who has had a decent year with a 3.84 ERA / 4.35 xFIP / 4.50 SIERA , 1.19 WHIP and 10.4% SwStr. Lucchesi had a pretty wide platoon split, as he’s allowed a .325 xwOBA to righties but just a .259 xwOBA to lefties in his career. Unfortunately for Lucchesi, 6 of 8 batters in the Rockies’ order are righties. Nolan Arenado (141 wRC+, .286 ISO vs. LHP this year), Ian Desmond (128 wRC+, .304 ISO), Daniel Murphy (122 wRC+, .194 ISO), Charlie Blackmon (118 wRC+, .254 ISO), Trevor Story (115 wRC+, .212 ISO), Pat Valaika (40 wRC+, .138 ISO), Garrett Hampson (26 wRC+, .093 ISO) and Drew Butera (117 wRC+ in AAA this year) are all possible options in the Rockies’ projected lineup for tonight. Ian Desmond has been their hottest hitter over the last 2 weeks with a .413 xwOBA. The Rockies currently have a healthy 6.25 implied total vs. Lucchesi and the Padres.

Rockies currently have an implied total above 7.5 vs. Agrazal in Coors

Over 49 big league innings this year, Agrazal has posted a 4.41 ERA, but with a 6.38 xFIP and 5.84 SIERA. He’s also posted a miniscule 11.9% K rate and 5.8% SwStr. While he has done a good job managing contact (5.5% barrel rate, 86.5 MPH aEV, .328 xwOBA on contact) lack of swing-and-miss stuff and reliance on a low BABIP is certainly not a sustainable approach in Coors. Once Agrazal is chased from the game, Rockies hitters will get at bats vs. a Pirates bullpen that has posted a below average .325 xwOBA over the past month. Charlie Blackmon (.360 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Trevor Story (.341), Ryan McMahon (.335), Nolan Arenado (.331), Daniel Murphy (.295), Ian Desmond (.293) and Tony Wolters (.279) are all in play tonight. Daniel Murphy has led the team over the past 2 weeks with a .393 xwOBA after struggling mightily for the majority of the year. Murphy comes at a discounted cost of just $4.5k on Draftkings. Nolan Arenado has also seen the ball well over the past 2 weeks with a .384 xwOBA. Ryan McMahon ($4.6k), Ian Desmond ($4.3k), Sam Hilliard ($4k) and Tony Wolters ($3.5k) also look like nice values for tonight’s matchup. The Rockies currently have a 7.61 implied total.

Alcantara has slate-worst 5.99 SIERA over past 30 days (min. 20 IP) coming into Coors start tonight

Over the past 30 days, Alcantara has a 6.35 ERA, 6.43 xFIP and 5.99 SIERA with a 5.7% K-BB. For the year he now owns a 4.44 ERA with a 5.58 xFIP and 5.66 SIERA as his ERA slowly regresses towards his peripherals after outpitching them for most of the season. Alcantara’s “contact manager” style might work in pitcher-friendly Marlins park, but the lack of swing and miss stuff (16.8% K rate) and lack of control (11.1% BB rate) is much less likely to work in Coors where he’ll have much less fortune on balls in play. Also working in Rockies’ hitters favor is that the Marlins have posted a 2nd worst .351 xwOBA allowed out of the bullpen in the past month. Charlie Blackmon (.363 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Trevor Story (.342), Ryan McMahon (.335), Nolan Arenado (.322), Raimel Tapia (.306) and Ian Desmond (.294) are all good options in the projected order. Charlie Blackmon has been their hottest hitter with a .436 xwOBA over the past 14 days, followed by Trevor Story with a .403 mark. Tapia, McMahon, and Desmond are all $4.7k or less on Draftkings. Daniel Murphy is just $4.1k and projects to hit towards the front of the order, but has just a .280 xwOBA on the year vs. RHP. The Rockies currently have a healthy 7.67 implied total.

Rockies in a good spot in Coors vs. Bumgarner

Perhaps we can get Rockies bats in Coors tonight for a slightly lower ownership than they should be after they underperformed in a great matchup last night, and now face Madison Bumgarner who has put together a nice string of starts recently. Bumgarner has had a decent season with a 3.74 ERA and 4.07 xFIP, but there’s a few reasons we should have no problem attacking him in Coors tonight. Bumgarner has been a far less effective pitcher in road starts; since 2017, he owns a .333 xwOBA allowed, 4.45 FIP and 14.8% K-BB in road starts, compared to a .299 xwOBA, 3.31 FIP and 18% K-BB in home starts. In that time frame, Bumgarner has thrown 17 innings in Coors field, posting a 5.82 ERA, .412 wOBA allowed and 5.83 FIP. Ian Desmond (.389 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Nolan Arenado (.362), Charlie Blackmon (.354), Trevor Story (.335) and Chris Iannetta (.331) are all great options in the projected order. Desmond is a great value at just $4.3k on Draftkings. Raimel Tapia has struggled vs. LHP (.279) but will likely be in the lineup due to Dahl’s injury and will cost just $3.8k on Draftkings. Garrett Hampson (.234) is another guy that has struggled but comes with just a $3k price tag and is a great play if he cracks the lineup. The Rockies currently have a 6.01 implied line vs. Bumgarner and the Giants tonight.

Cheaper Exposure To Coors

Ideally we can get to Trevor Story or Nolan Arenado in Coors against a lefty, but they are priced up across the industry making them harder to get to. I like Ian Desmond in all formats, especially cash games, at his price point. He allows you to get exposure to Coors without breaking the bank. While I don't love picking on Madison Bumgarner (who I actually think is an interesting GPP option), Desmond has mashed left-handed pitching this season where he owns a .980 OPS against southpaws this season and has mashed 9 of his 13 homers against lefties.

Rockies have an implied total over 7 this afternoon vs. Margevicius in Coors

Margevicius is another pitcher (like Eric Lauer yesterday) that just isn’t cut out for Coors given the tiny 16.2% K rate and 9.6% SwStr. Overall, Margevicius has a 5.02 ERA, 4.91 xFIP, 5.03 SIERA, 9.2% K-BB and 37.8% hard contact. He’s also allowed a .346 xwOBA on the year with a 7.6% barrel rate and 87.1 MPH aEV. Charlie Blackmon (.366 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Nolan Arenado (.358), Ian Desmond (.418), David Dahl (.412), Trevor Story (.321), Ryan McMahon (.335), Chris Iannetta (.321) and Mark Reynolds (.279) are all the projected batters in the Rockies lineup this afternoon and they are all in play given the matchup in Coors. Iannetta has the highest xwOBA over the past 14 days with a .453 mark, followed by Charlie Blackmon (.449) and David Dahl (.377). The Rockies currently have a 7.14 implied total versus Margevicius and the Padres today.

Rox have a good matchup versus Lauer in Coors tonight

There are a few types of pitchers that can survive Coors field, but Eric Lauer certainly isn’t one of them. Though Lauer does have a respectable GB rate at 43.5%, it won’t be enough to overcome the fact that he has just a 19% K rate and putrid 6.5% SwStr along with a 41.5% hard contact on the year. David Dahl (.418 xwOBA vs. LHP this year), Ian Desmond (.403), Nolan Arenado (.365), Charlie Blackmon (.360), Chris Iannetta (.321), Trevor Story (.307) and Brendan Rodgers (.202) are all good options in the Rockies’ projected order. Rodgers has had a slow start but had a 158 wRC+ in AAA this year and is a bargain on Draftkings at just $3.7k. Desmond is also very affordable at just $4.3k. Charlie Blackmon has been the Rockies hottest hitter over the past 14 days with a .466 xwOBA, followed by Chris Iannetta with a .426 mark. The Rockies have a healthy 6.21 implied line heading into their matchup with the Padres tonight.

Rockies bats a no-brainer option with a 7.64 implied total vs. Edwin Jackson

Journeyman Edwin Jackson gets the start for the Blue Jays tonight. Over 14 innings so far in 2019, Jackson has a 9 ERA / 5.53 xFIP / 5.15 SIERA with a 7.8% K-BB. He also has an ugly .408 xwOBA allowed and an atrocious 17.6% barrel rate allowed. Jackson hasn’t put together a good season for a while now and is projected as roughly a 5.50 ERA pitcher by most projection systems going forward. Rockies’ hitters project to see a good amount of plate appearances vs. the Jays’ bullpen, who has had a decent 4.00 SIERA in 2019 but a 6th worst 1.50 HR/9 allowed. Of the Rockies’ projected order, David Dahl (.358 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Nolan Arenado (.353), Trevor Story (.351) and Ryan McMahon (.340) are the best options vs. RHP and are all hitting in the top part of the order. Raimel Tapia (.261) is projected to leadoff and is just $4.6k on Draftkings. Dahl is projected to hit 3rd and is just $4.7k. Ian Desmond (.336) has quietly had a decent season and is just $4.4k. All Rockies’ bats are more than fairly priced today considering their massive implied total of 7.64.

Rockies have an otherworldly 7.37 implied total vs. Hess in Coors

David Hess has been horrific this year with a 6.75 ERA / 5.94 xFIP / 5.34 SIERA to go along with a 56% FB rate and just a 7.7% SwStr. Hess also has one of the worst xwOBAs in the league with a .408 mark, as well as a league worst 16.8% barrel rate (!) and 91.8 aEV. Hess’ only pitch with an xwOBA < .300 is his curve, which he has only thrown 5% of the time. His four seamer (53.5% usage, .447 xwOBA allowed) and his slider (25.2% usage, .354 xwOBA allowed) are his two main pitches and both get routinely hammered. Trevor Story (.358 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Nolan Arenado (.348), David Dahl (.344), Ian Desmond (.321) and Daniel Murphy (.276) are the best bats in the Rockies’ projected order today. Raimel Tapia (.252) projects to lead off and is a nice value at $4.8k given the matchup and environment. Brendan Rodgers (158 wRC+ in AAA this year) is a nice option at just $4.6k if he cracks the starting lineup. Rockies bats are a no-brainer play in the main slate today given the total, expect sky-high ownership.
