Two Offenses Feature Multiple Top Projected Bats

The Boston Red Sox are the lone offense exceeding five implied runs on a 13 game Friday night slate (5.17). That’s what a matchup at Fenway against Dallas Keuchel in 2022 gets you, even if the forecast currently appears to be slightly pitcher friendly. Boston also does not separate themselves much from the rest of the board with the Cardinals at 4.97 implied runs, but then only three other offenses reaching four and a half run team totals. We have a lot of good pitchers facing top offenses tonight and that includes the Yankees (Jeffrey Springs), Dodgers (Yu Darvish) and Braves (Sandy Alcantara) all lower than you’d normally see them on this board.

Despite the lack of separation, Boston bats do dominate projections tonight. Each of the top three projected bats on DraftKings and five of the top 10 are Red Sox (four of the top 10 on FanDuel). Rafael Devers (109 wRC+, .174 ISO vs LHP this season) and Tommy Pham (138 wRC+, .183 ISO) are the top projected bats on both sites. Keuchel struck out a single batter, walked a single batter and allowed a single home run, but seven total runs in his first start for the Rangers. He has an 8.84 ERA over 13 starts this year and yet the Rangers are going to let him do it again (can’t be worse than their bullpen last night). In Boston no less. While he’s still generating half his contact on the ground (50.2%) and the .376 BABIP, 53.2 LOB% and 18.3 HR/FB are all likely to regress, a 4.80 xFIP is still his only estimator below five. Batters from either side of the plate exceed both a .350 wOBA and xwOBA against him this season. Xander Bogaerts (183 wRC+, .179 ISO), J.D. Martinez (158 wRC+, .209 ISO) and Alex Verdugo (109 wRC+, .123 ISO) are also top projecting bats tonight.

The Houston Astros (4.65) are the only other offense to feature multiple top 10 projected bats tonight. It’s now hard to believe that Reid Detmers struck out just two in his no-hitter. He recognized he needed to be better and has a 29.5 K% over his last 10 starts, which has pushed his season rate up to 23.3%. That said, his 3.47 ERA is still well below estimators ranging narrowly from a 4.07 xERA to a 4.15 DRA (.255 BABIP, 78.8 LOB%), but sustaining a strikeout rate anywhere near 30% will solve that problem in a hurry. This is a concerning spot against the second best fastball hitting team in the league (0.55 wFB/C), as Detmers has thrown his 43.3% of the time with mixed results (-0.3 RV/100, 23.5 Whiff%, .347 wOBA, .362 xwOBA). With RHBs still owning a league average .310 wOBA, .319 xwOBA against Detmers this season, you can see why Jose Altuve (200 wRC+, .351 ISO) is a top projected bat tonight. Yordan Alvarez (165 wRC+, .264 ISO) and Kyle Tucker (91 wRC+, .172 ISO) might have a tougher time of it, but are still projected to do some damage. LHBs have just a .248 wOBA and .296 xwOBA against Detmers this season.

Top Offense Has Struggled in Recent Meetings Against Barrel Prone Lefty

With just 12 teams on the board tonight, the Houston Astros (4.74) are the only offense that exceeds even four and a half implied runs. This may not be as troubling as it sounds when you consider that the league average is a mere 4.08 runs per team per game so far, although it does mean Houston bats will likely be very popular tonight. Marco Gonzales was forced to leave his last start after just three batters after taking one off the wrist, but he hasn’t missed any time. The 14.9 K-BB% has been solid, but he’s remained barrel prone (10.4%), an issue that popped up last year. Four of his five barrels and 23.5% of his fly balls have left the yard, numbers that should regress a bit as the season goes on. Ironically, even with that and a 48.8 LOB%, he has just a 3.86 ERA because more than half his runs have been unearned. RHBs own a .354 wOBA and LHBs a .354 xwOBA against him since last season. However, he has one start against Houston this year and one last year…both quality starts. That said, Houston does have three batters pop inside the top 10 projected hitter point totals tonight (PlateIQ). They are the returning Jose Altuve (117 wRC+, .184 ISO vs LHP since 2021), Alex Bregman (127 wRC+, .149 ISO) and Yordan Alvarez (134 wRC+, .227 ISO) in a lefty on lefty matchup.

With the exception of Byron Buxton and Jesse Winker, the rest of the top 10 are filled up with Yankees (4.4 runs – second best on the board) and Blue Jays (4.1 – fourth). As luck would have it, these two teams are facing each other in Toronto, which is somewhat of a neutral run environment, with two quality pitchers on the mound. While Jordan Montgomery has just an 18.3 K% through four starts, his 12.6 SwStr% is well above league average. He’s walked just five with one of his two barrels (3.4%) leaving the yard. With a .224 BABIP and 4.5 HR/FB, estimators are well above a 2.70 ERA, but don’t expect it to fully regress as the strikeout rate should rise above league average. RHBs are about league average against him since last season (.304 wOBA, .319 xwOBA) and he’ll be facing a lot of them tonight. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (148 wRC+, .237 ISO vs LHP since LY) and George Springer (168 wRC+, .299 ISO) are top 10 projected bats on either site, while Bo Bichette (154 wRC+, .220 ISO) hovers right around the bottom of that list.

Ross Stripling has moved away from his four-seamer, which had resulted in more ground balls (52.2%) and fewer strikeouts until he punched out seven of 20 Bostonians with a 16.7 SwStr% last time out. He’s walked just one since moving into the rotation (three starts) with an 84.4 mph EV. A 3.60 ERA is actually a bit above estimators. The Toronto pen will likely factor in quite a bit here and they’ve been marginal overall with estimators in the mid-threes (the Yankee and Mariner pens has been great by the way). Like Gonzales, Stripling has struggled against RHBs by actual results (.341 wOBA since 2021), but also LHBs by expected results (.345 xwOBA). Aaron Judge (145 wRC+, .243 ISO vs RHP since LY) and his 200 wRC+ in 2022 is the top projected batter on the slate, while Giancarlo Stanton (133 wRC+, .239 ISO) and Josh Donaldson (117 wRC+, .188 ISO) join him in the top 10. Anthony Rizzo (113 wRC+, .221 ISO) has been on fire as well (205 wRC+ this year).

Two Top Projected Offenses Kick Off a Long Day of Baseball

Lucas Giolito has competed six innings in just one of his last five starts, but it was six shutout innings on exactly 100 pitches in his next to last start. He missed the first half of September and struck out just 13 of his last 65 with an 11.9 SwStr% that’s more than three points below his season rate. His full season numbers included a 27.9 K% (20.2 K-BB%) with just 33.2% of his contact on the ground, but still allowing only 6.7% Barrels/BBE on an 87.7 mph EV. A 3.79 FIP was his furthest removed estimator from a 3.53 ERA. Strong numbers, but only 15 of his 31 starts were quality starts. He will occasionally throw in a stinker with four runs or more allowed six times this year. He’s in a very tough spot, facing an offense with a 116 wRC+ and 10.8 K-BB% vs RHP in a neutral, domed environment. Four of the first five batters in the Houston lineup are below a 15.5 K% vs RHP this season, although the bottom two are above 31%. There’s not a bad pitcher on the board today, but Giolito’s matchup and the fact that his team is down in the series makes him one of the tougher rosters.

Giolito has a slight reverse split, although batters from either side of the plate were below a .300 wOBA & xwOBA against him this year. Each of the first eight batters in the Houston lineup exceed a 100 wRC+ vs RHP this season. Jose Altuve (136 wRC+, .227 ISO vs RHP) might be the top second baseman on the board, while Michael Brantley (158 wRC+, .143 ISO) is a top value for $3.4K on DraftKings and a full $1K less on FanDuel. No Houston batter costs more than $4.6K on DraftKings. Houston tops the board with a team total of 4.1 runs.

Framber Valdez finished the season with a 70.3 GB% in 134.2 innings. As impressive as that is, he backed it with just a 21.9 K% and 10.1 BB% that aren’t very daily fantasy friendly, so what you are dependent upon when rostering him is the workload. He recorded seventh inning starts in 12 of his 22 starts. That workload is less guaranteed in the post-season, but the sense of urgency should be less after a first game victory, especially with an old school manager. Valdez’s 3.14 ERA is about half a run less than estimators ranging from a 3.58 xFIP to a 4.01 FIP and DRA, but Houston also had the second best defense in baseball this year, according to Statcast’s Runs Prevented (+34). The White Sox were did have a 113 wRC+ and 15.7 HR/FB vs LHP this season. The first three in the Chicago lineup are all below a 20 K% vs LHP, but the middle three are all above 24%. Framber is interesting for $7.5K on DraftKings ($1.8K more on FanDuel) with the longer leash expectation.

That said, the White Sox will stack up entirely right-handed. Batters from that side had a .281 wOBA and .296 xwOBA against Valdez this season. Luis Robert smashed LHP in 121 PAs this year (231 wRC+, .397 ISO), as did Yasmani Grandal (184 wRC+, .281 ISO), Jose Abreu (161 wRC+, .309 ISO) and Andrew Vaughn (156 wRC+, .286 ISO). Nobody else in the lineup exceeds a .180 ISO vs LHP. Tim Anderson is the only other batter above a 99 wRC+ (125). The White Sox are third on the board at 3.9 implied runs.

A Reverse Platoon Split with Contact Profile Issues is not Ideal in this Spot

Both FanDuel and DraftKings are making it really hard to get away from the top offenses on the board with the three teams that separate themselves up top (Rockies, Red Sox and Nationals) not only having the top bats in great matchups tonight, but several cheap ones as well, making these stacks fairly easy. One interesting a bit lower on the board, the Astros have a 4.74 implied run line against the Rays that still has them a top seven offense tonight. Michael Wacha has spiked his strikeout rate to 30.6% with just a 3.3 BB% over his last 29.1 innings, but contact problems still persist with a 91.1 mph EV and five home runs over this span. Season estimators range widely from a 5.84 xERA that’s actually above his 5.49 ERA, all the way down to a 3.90 xFIP. Costing just $6.3K on DraftKings, you might even be able to consider Wacha a punt pitching option with that kind of upside here, but as a pitcher with a reverse split (RHBs .367 wOBA, .373 xwOBA) this is also a pretty strong spot for Houston bats, considering that contact profile. In fact, there’s a possible lineup construction on DraftKings that might include both a Rockies/Red Sox stack with room for a more costly Jose Altuve (135 wRC+, .227 ISO vs RHP) and Alex Bregman (114 wRC+, .154 ISO) and then say A.J. Alexy in a high upside matchup and Charlie Morton in your pitching spots. If you want to go further in on a Houston stack, Carlos Correa (131 wRC, .227 ISO) and Chas McCormick (105 wRC+, .170 ISO) are additional bats you might want to consider, the latter costing $2.7K or less on either site.

Same-Handed Batters Exceed a .400 wOBA Against This Pitcher

On most nights, the roof is closed in Texas and that makes it a negative run environment. However, that doesn’t necessarily make this a bad spot for the Houston Astros, who have the fourth highest implied run line on the board (5.39). In nine starts, Kohei Arihara has just a 6.3 K-BB% with a 91.7 mph EV, allowing 14.3% Barrels/BBE. Just nine of his 17 barrels have left the yard, yet he still has a 5.89 ERA that’s only half a run above his best estimator. Arihara’s worst problems have come against RHBs (.426 wOBA, .438 xwOBA) and that’s even worse news against a predominantly right-handed offense, though LHBs have hit him well too (.310 wOBA, .359 xwOBA). Among the first seven batters in the projected lineup for Houston tonight, which generally remains fairly stable, all have a wRC+ above 115 vs RHP this year. The unfortunate thing is that Houston bats aren’t cheap, but that might not be much of an issue without very much in the way of expensive pitching tonight. Kyle Tucker (150 wRC+, .250 ISO) has been their best bat against RHP this year, though Chas McCormick (109 wRC+, .187 ISO) barely costs more than the minimum on either site. A middle of the order stack here might be more interesting than the top, although there’s no reason not to include Jose Altuve (140 wRC+, .231 ISO) and Alex Bregman (116 wRC+, .162 ISO).

This Offense Feasts on Visiting Southpaws

We don’t have a confirmed starter for the Angels and therefore no sportsbook lines, but Jose Suarez is expected to make his first start and appearance of the season. This would be good news for the Astros, as they have punished LHP (115 wRC+), demolished visiting pitchers (125 wRC+ at home) and been on fire (146 wRC+ last seven days). Suarez made just two starts and pitched just 2.1 innings for the Angels last year. He threw 81 innings in his rookie year in 2019. He has just a 9.0 K-BB%, 36.3 GB% and 7.6% Barrels/BBE. In 110 AAA innings (2018-19), he barely generated a double digit K-BB%. Most simply, there’s no strikeout upside towards rostering Suarez here. Five of nine projected Astros are below a 15 K% vs LHP since 2019. Expected to face seven from the RH side is another issue for Suarez, as RHBs have a .443 wOBA (.393 xwOBA) against him in the majors. No surprise that Alex Bregman (196 wRC+, .337 ISO vs LHP since 2019) and Jose Altuve (142 wRC+, .ISO) are your top bats. Altuve actually leads the projected lineup with a 96.1 mph EV on fly balls and line drives this year and could even have some stolen base value if Suzuki is behind the plate. Should the early departure of Suarez be a concern, a heavily worked Angels’ bullpen has a 5.84 ERA and 4.60 FIP over the last 30 days with some of their top arms potentially unavailable tonight.

Luis Garcia owns today’s second highest strikeout rate (28%, 14.3 SwStr%). If you’re looking for a reason to go underweight on him though, he’s pitched five innings against the Angels over two separate appearances, striking out only one of 25 batters with three walks and two HRs. He’s managed contact well with just an 86.9 mph EV, but with just a 35 GB%, he’s allowed 11.7% Barrels/BBE (four HRs). The 3.28 ERA is a product of a .214 BABIP and 84.8 LOB%. His SIERA (3.75) and xERA (3.84) are the most optimistic estimators with the remainders around four and a half. The Angels also have a 115 wRC+ vs RHP and don’t strike out a ton, though five in the projected lineup have at least a 24 K% vs RHP since 2019. Unlike the Astros, this offense is a three man band. Jared Walsh (149 wRC+, .276 ISO vs RHP since 2019), Mike Trout (195 wRC+, .388 ISO) and Shohei Ohtani (125 wRC+, .250 ISO) are your desired bats with David Fletcher (97 wRC+) and Justin Upton (91 wRC+, .182 ISO) reasonable stacking options.

Cold Hitter vs Very Bad Pitcher

To put things lightly, Altuve has been absolute trash so far this season when looking at his actual numbers vs RHP. He owns a .104 ISO and a .284 wOBA. While this may be because they can't cheat anymore, knowing whether or not Lyles is going to throw a breaking ball may not matter considering he his horrible. On the season, Lyles owns a horrible .408 wOBA and .279 ISO to go with a 13.4% K rate vs righties. Even if Altuve was a league average hitter, he would still be a good play today at his price tag over on DK at just 3.6k, but he's definitely not a league average hitter. He's still only striking out at a 16.7% K rate and the rest of his underlying numbers really aren't that bad. He's going to turn it around at some point and this is a perfect spot for him against a terrible pitcher.

Too Cheap For Who He Is

I’ll be honest, I haven’t been impressed with the Astros this season. It’s like their hitting powers have disappeared now that they aren’t allowed to cheat. They were shut out last night and haven’t put up double-digit runs since August 24th. The appeal here is that Jordan Lyles has not been good this season, boasting a 1.90 HR/9 ratio with a 7.80 ERA and ugly 1.64 WHIP. The prices on these Astros bats are also dirt cheap across the industry, especially Jose Altuve, and they are a way to get exposure to a top offense as well as top tier pitching in Shane Bieber without breaking the bank.

Targeting a 20.9% BB Rate

Robbie Ray has an unsightly 20.9% walk rate early in 2020 and has struggled with free passes his entire career. When he isn't walking people he allows hard hits at a greater than 42% clip. He is facing a Houston offense that is among the most patient and powerful in the league. HOU is a top stack on the slate as they will have plenty of opportunities with runners on base. The top targets include Alex Bregman, Jose Altuve, George Springer and Carlos Correa.
