Matt Joyce Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Cards/Braves features two highest GB rates in the majors, but lowest K rates on the board

The game in St Louis features the two highest ground ball rates in baseball this year (more than 100 IP), but also the only two strikeout rates on the board lower than 23% in Dallas Keuchel (18.7 K%, 60.1 GB%) and Dakota Hudson (18 K%, 56.9 GB%). They are also the only pitchers on the board above a .300 wOBA (both are above .330) and above 35.5% 95+ mph EV (both are above 38%). While these are clearly the bottom two pitchers on the board from a daily fantasy standpoint and further burdened by the prospect of elimination (in Hudson’s case) or working on just three days rest (in Keuchel’s case), none the less, either must be considered in a secondary role on DraftKings, where they’re the two lowest priced pitchers on the board. One reason is the favorable environment in St Louis, a clear pitcher’s park in the cooler months of the season. Another is the fact that it’s hard to call any pitcher really safe today. Even Max Scherzer fails to fit that description in an elimination game against the Dodgers.

All that said, this is certainly not a spot to avoid batters either. RHBs were right around a .340 wOBA and xwOBA against Keuchel this season, still with a 59.3 GB%, but much lower than LHBs (.277 wOBA, 70 GB%). The frightening thing here though, is that this St Louis lineup features just three batters above a .150 ISO vs LHP this year and also just three above a 97 wRC+. Tommy Edman (151 wRC+, .262 ISO) is just one of two above both and he’s batting seventh. The other, and clearly the most coveted batter in this lineup, is Paul Goldschmidt (148 wRC+, .298 ISO).

For the road team, Hudson’s splits have been even worse. LHBs are above a .350 wOBA and xwOBA this year with a ground ball rate (50.2%) nearly 15 points lower. This makes Freddie Freeman (154 wRC+, .280 ISO vs RHP) the clear top bat here, but also adds value to cheaper bats in Nick Markakis (112 wRC+, .147 ISO), Matt Joyce (131 wRC+, .163 ISO) and Brian McCann (97 wRC+, .178 ISO), who has very similar numbers to Ozzie Albies against RHP (98 wRC+, .177 ISO) this year.

Logan Webb has allowed a .379 xwOBA over the past 30 days

22 year old Logan Webb has had a bit of a rough time since being called up as he’s posted a 6.51 ERA over 27 and 2/3 innings. He does have a 4.01 xFIP and 4.61 SIERA and a not-terrible 10.9% K-BB that indicates the ERA is likely a bit inflated. Though he also has a .353 xwOBA allowed (and a .379 xwOBA over the past 30 days) so he isn’t fooling too many batters either. The Braves are missing a few of their best hitters but still have a solid 5.50 implied total and their lineup has some nice value plays as well. Freddie Freeman (.419 xwOBA vs. RHP this year), Matt Joyce (.370), Nick Markakis (.370), Dansby Swanson (.340), Tyler Flowers (.308), Adeiny Hechavarria (.294) and Austin Riley (.285) are all in play. Freeman, Joyce and Markakis all have a xwOBA over .400 over the past 2 weeks. Swanson and Hechavarria are batting 1-2 in the order and are both $4k or less on Draftkings and $2.7k or less on Fanduel. Markakis, Joyce and Flowers are all below $3.9k on Draftkings and $2.9k on Fanduel. Billy Hamilton is also an option for GPPs, as he has stolen base upside and is near minimum price on both sites.

Red hot Matt Olson is facing a HR prone pitcher with a park upgrade tonight

The A's have a 120 wRC+ on the road, 108 wRC+ vs RHP and 140 wRC+ over the last seven days, including a Hard-Soft rate above 24% in each of the first two instances and a 16.2 HR/FB outside of Oakland this year. Combine that with the 16 HRs Mike Fiers has allowed this year and Vegas has arrived at 4.95 implied runs, the second highest total on the board tonight. Since last season, the wOBA and xwOBA for all batters is between .340 and .360 against Fiers, as is his wOBA for this season alone with LHBs owning a slight edge with nine of his 16 HRs surrendered. Matt Olson (148 wRC+, .331 ISO) is the top bat in the lineup against RHP over the last calendar year. He has a 219 wRC+ with a team best 58.3 Hard% over the last week. Dustin Fowler (101 wRC+, .152 ISO), Matt Joyce (120 wRC+, .234 ISO), Jed Lowrie (124 wRC+, .187 ISO) and Khris Davis (135 wRC+, .300 ISO) are all fine options in front of Olson as well.

Power Stack Potential

The A's will definitely get over-looked tonight, but I like the power upside they bring to the table in a matchup against Mike Fiers. Fiers is a fly ball pitcher that allows a ton of hard contact, so plucking out the power bats as part of a mini-stack is a great way to go. Khris Davis leads the team with a .271 ISO and would be my first choice, but I like the upside of Joyce, Lowrie, and even a couple others here. The A's are a great boom/bust stack.

Leading Off The High Total Game

If Matt Joyce is back in the leadoff spot tonight, his salary stands out as a strong play in all formats on DK/FDRFT. We know Bartolo Colon is not going to strike out many batters, and Joyce has the power upside to hit home runs and the plate skills to get on base in front of the big bats coming up behind him.

Old Reliable

Joyce hasn't done great on the year, but there's a reason why he's generally near the top of the order going up against a righty. Over the last 2 years, Joyce owns a decent .338 wOBA and a good .229 ISO vs. RHP. He gets a matchup against Junis who is giving up a lot of hard contact on the season (36.1%) and a lot of fly balls (39.9%). Add in that the A's have a implied run totoal of around 5 and they're batting on the road so, barring Joyce getting pintch hit for, he could end up with 5 AB's in this matchup.

Batters from either side of the plate have a .344 wOBA against Ian Kennedy since last season

Oakland has a 5.01 implied run line that stands alone as the fourth highest mark on the board without a team within two-tenths of a run in either direction. On the plus side, batters from either side have a .344 wOBA (and higher xwOBA) against fly ball and home run prone Ian Kennedy since last season, while the lineup features five batters (Matt Joyce, Matt Chapman, Jed Lowrie, Khris Davis, Matt Olson) with at least a 110 wRC+ against RHP over the last calendar year. All except Lowrie (.181) are also above a .220 ISO. On the negative side, Matt Olson (150 wRC+, .324 ISO) is the only one of the five above a 40 wRC+ over the last week (138 wRC+, 57.9%). This is a spot players will want some exposure to none the less for sheer power potential. Matt Joyce (132 wRC+, .253 ISO) costs right around $3K on either site.

If not using Archer (LHBs 42.2 Hard% since 2017), Matts Olson (157 wRC+ vs RHP) and Joyce (134 wRC+) offer value

While Chris Archer has been pitching well, deep into games (6 or more innings with two or fewer runs in four of his last five), another factor potentially in his favor is that five of nine Oakland bats (Jed Lowrie, Matt Chapman, Stephen Piscotty, Dustin Fowler, Jonathan Lucroy) come into this game with a wRC+ below 15 over the last seven days. It's not that they're not making decent contact (all have a hard hit rate above 35%), but all five have struck out in at least a quarter of plate appearances over that span. If not playing Archer though, there are some red flags in his recent walk and hard contact rates as well. Matt Olson (157 wRC+, .337 ISO) and Matt Joyce (134 wRC+, .251 ISO) are tops in the lineup for wRC+ and ISO vs RHP over the last calendar year against a pitcher who has struggled with platoon splits a bit since last season (LHBs .337 wOBA, 42.2 Hard%). Each costs less than $4K on either site, the latter at $3K or below.

Left-handed batters have a .400 xwOBA vs Felix Hernandez since last season

Lineups for the Seattle/Oakland game only available on DraftKings or alternate slates on FanDuel are not confirmed as of yet. Felix Hernandez has an ERA and FIP well above five with just a 39.3 GB% and 9.8 K-BB%. He has a board worst .394 xwOBA on the road since last season. While RHBs hit him well (.333 wOBA, .339 xwOBA), LHBs have destroyed him since last season (.355 wOBA, .404 xwOBA). Matt Olson (159 wRC+, .396 xwOBA, .341 ISO vs RHP since last season), Jed Lowrie (131 wRC+, .372 xwOBA, .189 ISO) and Matt Joyce (135 wRC+, .251 ISO) are all great plays from the projected lineup. The 27 year-old Josh Lucas makes his first career start for the A's. He struck out seven of 14 batters in a recent relief appearance, but none of 10 in the his first this season. He's had double digit walk rates at several attempts at AAA and hasn't started a game since 2013 in A ball.

Mike Leake has the highest xwOBA (.427), aEV (91.9 mph) and 95+ mph EV (50%) on the board

Mike Leake has the highest xwOBA (.427), aEV (91.9 mph) and 95+ mph EV (50%) on the board tonight. The A's are without Khris Davis and have a moderate 4.55 implied run line and could fly under the radar here. They are a team that makes a lot of loud contact. LHBs have a .342 wOBA and 373 xwOBA against Leake since last season. Matt Olson (160 wRC+, .345 ISO vs RHP last calendar year) and Matt Joyce (134 wRC+, .252 ISO) offer great value in the top half of the lineup below $4K on either site.
