I don’t love these stats, b/c if the team isn’t in their division then the stats go back 2-4 seasons ago. For instance, why would you want to know how Vince Carter did against the Golden State Warriors over the past 4-6 games? That could take you back to the Nets playing the warriors while they had Baron Davis (not sure if that’s a possible scenario, just trying to make a point).
Even if you get accurate matchups, say D-Rose vs. Mil and they have played twice this season already…it’s just 2 games. That sample size is pretty small and not very reliable.
That said, we are shooting to have more advanced stats by next season, but it’s a daunting task. For now, Yahoo is your best bet for this kind of stat, but again, I don’t see it’s value for NBA.

Agreed for the most part. There are certain players that just have another team’s number. Kobe always seems to do well against Phoenix because he has it out for them, for example, by his own admission. But other than that, sometimes it isn’t telling enough to look at those type of stats.

I find your hatred of Yahoo amusing. They provide useful info, but every major has something that gives basically the same data. Compare for yourself and choose the one that’s right for you.
Derrick Rose Splits:

ESPN – http://espn.go.com/nba/player/splits/_/id/3456/derrick-roseTake your pick.

I think that there are situations where you MUST use these stats, and the farther it can go back the better. If i’m thinking of using M Gasol against Orlando I want to see exactly how he has fared vs Howard in the past 2-4 years. A good example is in play tonight. Kobe vs Philly. How does he do in his hometown city, and more specifically how does he do vs Iggy.

But in cases like Gasol, those stats wouldn’t really be too relevant because Gasol has never been this good and never been this big of a part of the offense, with Zach Randolph down.
I think some times these type stats are useful, but in most instances they aren’t accurate for the reason I said. Coaching staffs and philosophies change, players get better and worse and the use of certain players change dramatically from year to year.
All in all I wouldn’t use it a whole bunch. Occasionally yes, but not enough to devote a portion of my research to it. Really who cares if Durant has been bottled up by a certain player in the past? He has never been as good as he is now and is entering the prime of his career.
Take those stats with a grain of salt.
Then again take what I am saying with a grain of salt, cause I usually don’t know what I am talking about -

NBA.com has advanced stats that are like this but they give you weird splits with efficiency ratings and its tough to find the pure numbers. with that said, this season ur better off finding a hot hand in the past few games. its so condensed that guys are having huge hot or cold streaks with no rest days to cool them off or get them back on the right track

I’m with headChopper on this. If it were easier to access the data, I might use these stats occasionally, but I don’t think it’s worth your time. Especially with the interfaces you have to use on Yahoo. There are too many variables to be able to find a number that is telling, and then the sample size is just so small. There are natural inconsistencies with just guys having off/on days in basketball. Your shot can just be ‘off’ one night, that happens. Then you’re looking at just games vs. a player to make your pick? I don’t buy that for basketball, maybe football matchups, but I don’t think I’ll spend the time on this for NBA.
I also have a fun-hatred towards Yahoo. To me, Yahoo and ESPN are to daily fantasy sports fans what Moe’s and Chipotle are to burrito-lovers. You can only love one site/restaurant, but not both, and everyone passionately chooses one without good reason.
