Jordan Spieth Daily Fantasy News, Rankings, Projections

Jordan Spieth looks to build on positive course history

In just a few short seasons Jordan Spieth has gone from a world-class player to someone many in the industry label as washed up. With predicted ownership of less than 7% for the week, there is a chance to buy low on a golfer who has proven to play well at this tournament in the past. In addition to gaining 41 shots tee to green in his last five starts at The ATT Pro-Am, Spieth is a former champ with a perfect cut record in seven career starts. The debate moving forward will be can Spieth turn his game around. For those who either believe in Spieth and or like the idea of buying low on ownership, then the addition of this former top player in the world to your roster builds is a great way to gain leverage in GPP's this week.

Jordan Spieth continues to ride hot putter

Prior to the use of advanced golf stats to gain a sense of a player's ability, we would simply look at results to identify the measure of a player. Now more than ever players put every part of their game under the scrutiny of advanced golf analytics. For the better part of 18 months, Jordan Speith has seen a decline in his overall performance. Winless since the 2017 British Open, Speith has really struggled to keep the ball in play off the tee. Without any advanced strokes gained metrics to look at from last week, we have to go old school and look at the somewhat outdated stats to gain a sense of how a player performed. Despite finishing last in driving ( fairways hit) Speith was able to use his hot putter ( 2nd in total putts) to finish inside the top 10. There was some hope that with an offseason to work on things that Spieth would have a better start to the year in terms of his ball-striking. While his last-place showing in total fairways hit is a bit alarming, there is a case to be made for taking a more patient approach to the progress of Spieth's game. Keep in mind we have zero strokes gained numbers to go by last week. The one thing that is apparent to gain from last week is that the DFS community is not ready to jump on board with Spieth. Currently projected at sub 10% ownership, Spieth could be considered as a unique top end tournament spend for the week. Assuming he keeps the ball in play Spieth could potentially ride his hot putter to top finish as he looks to regain his lost form.

Jordan Spieth set to make his 2020 PGA debut

It's been almost two months since Jordan Spieth last competed in a tournament. In what has been a well-documented fall from the top ranks in the world of golf, Spieth will look to regain the form that saw him as one of the better players in the world. During his off time, Spieth will have spent the time necessary working on his game in hopes of improving his erratic driver play. Entering this week at a very low projected ownership number it's safe to say that the majority of the DFS world has very little faith in a return to form for Spieth. While his form off the tee is something that we should have a concern with, there is a strong case to be made for trying to get ahead of the curve in a potential comeback season for Spieth. While most will take a wait and see approach with this past major champion, those who want to be aggressive with Spieth could potentially gain an edge on a player who is hungry to return to the winner's circle.

Presidents Cup race heats up as FedEx Cup playoffs start

In less than a month from now, Presidents Cup Captian Tiger Woods will have a few very tough choices to make in terms of his picks to make the 2019 team. As the season winds down the last three events could have a big impact on who makes the team. With his strong performance last week Webb Simpson made a big push to make the team by moving into the sixth place spot in the current standings. Captian Woods had an impromptu meeting with hopeful team members yesterday at The Northern Trust. The group took a picture at that meeting, but one staple of past National Teams was not in the picture. Jordan Spieth who will almost certainly need a pick to make this year's team was not in attendance. Not currently in the top 8 automatic spots, Captian Woods is rumored to take a spot as a playing captain this year. With plenty of points still up for grabs, you should keep an eye on Presidents Cup standings over the next three weeks.

Some Hidden Gems from Last Week's WGC Event

It doesn’t matter if you listen to podcasts or read articles, everyone is laughing at the fact that Spieth is priced with the elite golfers in the field this week. I was ready to write him off as well, but decided to do a deeper dive into his numbers after seeing he led the field in birdies (22) at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He basically had four blowup holes that took him out of contention — two doubles and two triples. The big numbers were all thanks to ball striking, so his raw numbers for the tournament don’t really tell the whole story. I went through his scorecard and looked at his scoring on all of the par fours and fives where he hit the fairway with his drive and couldn’t believe the numbers — he was 19-under with 19 birdies and zero bogeys. As mentioned above, this is a course where everyone hits the fairways at a high clip. I honestly think Spieth can win this week and we currently have his ownership at sub-10%.

Jordan Spieth continues to search for answers

Jordan Spieth's last win was two years ago this week. Spieth held off Matt Kuchar down the stretch to win the 2017 British Open. Mired in almost a two-year slump many in the DFS world have sworn off Spieth until further notice. For those willing to take a chance on Spieth there is a strong case to made for buying a one time top player in the world at both a discount in price and ownership. Currently projected at less than 5% ownership, Spieth is one of the few players in this field with multiple major championships under his belt. While the negative's in his game has been covered over and over during this prolonged slump there are few things to look at in terms of possible reasons to add Spieth to your roster builds this week. The greens at Royal Portrush are drawing early week comparisons to courses like Augusta. Steep false fronts will require players to think their way around this historic venue. Spieth always seems to play his best golf at Augusta, so if he can avoid trouble off the tee and make it to the green then he should feel at home on Royal Portrush putting surfaces. Hitting fairways this week could be easier for Spieth and his erratic off the tee game as it appears players can hit less than driver and still have a chance to compete. The volatility in his game makes this multiple major champion a GPP only type play, but as he has proven over and over in his career Spieth can compete and win with the best in the game.

Weather update for The Memorial

Kevin Roth's weather report for this week's event is up in the main forum. Like many of the other host cities of recent PGA Tour events, Dublin Ohio has not been without rain this spring. The very lush Muriefield Villiage should see more rain this weekend as Roth expects thunderstorms to be in play on Thursday. For now, it appears that there is no real edge in trying to stack a tee time wave based upon weather. The chance for isolated storms increases on Thursday as the day progresses making delays possible. In terms of DFS, we can look to perhaps favoring more of what we already like in terms of skill sets for the week. If more rain comes through the Dublin area then the course should play softer making Muirfield Village even more of a second shot course. If this happens then you can give a slight bump to great iron players for the week.

Weather update for The Charles Schwab Challenge

Kevin Roth's weather report for this week's Charles Schwab Challenge is up in the main forum. Typical of spring weather in Texas golfers will face winds throughout the tournament. With a similar forecast for all four days, we can use weather a bit differently this week. Normally we look to see if an edge can be gained by stacking one tee time wave over another. This week however there seems to be almost no edge in a tee time draw, but due to the predicted weather conditions, you can target golfers who you feel play better in the wind. The wind will not be significant enough to only pick players who play well in the wind but instead used to help make a decision between two golfers.

Gut Don't Fail Me Now

This pick is very unlike me, but I have the strongest feeling in my gut that Spieth is going to win this week. I've learned it's better to trust your gut and be wrong than to go against it and have it be right. Spieth is coming off of his best finish in more than a year, but his T3 at the PGA Championship was bolstered by 10+ strokes putting. Obviously, that's not sustainable. Spieth might be one of the best putters in the world, but we can't expect that each and every week. I was more impressed by the fact that he gained strokes ball striking in an incredibly difficult field on a course that didn't really suit his game. He now gets to play at Colonial Country Club where he has never missed a cut and where he has four top seven finishes. This is a second shot course that rewards good iron play and a good short game. He'll have a ton of confidence heading into the week and he's arguably the most motivated of any of the elite golfers teeing it up this week.

Weather update for The PGA Championship

For the second straight week, it looks like there could be a potential edge to be gained in stacking tee times due to weather. Last week's Byron Nelson saw a 36 hole split of 2.49 shots in favor of the early Thursday/ late Friday wave. It's worth noting that 2.02 of that edge occurred in Thursday's round making Friday almost an even split. With the eventual winner coming out of the late Thursday/ early Friday wave it's worth taking stock in the fact that even though weather provided a clear advantage on Thursday the weather was not bad enough to completely eliminate one side of the draw. That being said we can look to use the forecast again this week. Rain and wind will be the two biggest factors in play for the week. With wet and cold weather already having an impact on the first few days of prep work, the reports of how long and hard Bethpage Black will play are growing larger by the minute. Thursday could start with early showers that should hopefully move out before the first tee times. The early morning draw will face cooler temperatures with the wind blowing steady near 10mph throughout the day. Friday morning golfers will face similar conditions to Thursday late with winds between 5 and 10mph. With a chance of isolated storms moving through the area on Friday, afternoon golfers could see wind gust near 20mph at times. For now, it appears the late/ early has a better draw, but as we saw last week you can have players from the worst draw still play well. Stacking tee time waves can be a something you look to do in GPP's for the week, but with only a small predicted edge to be had the use of weather in roster choices might be better served as a tie-breaking method in a close call situation.
