GOLF DFS Core Plays: Notorious' Top Selections & Betting Picks

Top-ranked grinder, Notorious, breaks down his favorite daily fantasy golf plays at various salary ranges for the coming week’s golf tournament. Who should you be building around? Find out below.

Olympic Men’s Golf Competition

While I could sit here for hours and complain about my bad breaks at the 3M Open, we have more important matters at hand. The Olympics are in full swing and the DFS contests for the golf event are bigger than I ever could have imagined. I’ve always wondered if interest in events drove contest sizing or vice-versa, but it’s likely a little of both. With such big prize pools, I will be treating this week like any other on the PGA Tour. Obviously, this is a much different event than we are used to sweating and that golfers are used to playing in. There are 60 golfers set to tee it up for their chance at a gold medal. The event will only consist of three rounds and it will not feature a cut since there are only 60 golfers in the field. Individual motivation could play a key role this week. Some golfers don’t sound too enthused to be here, some are looking to win medals in order to avoid mandatory military service, and some became citizens of another country just so they would be eligible to play in the Olympics.

The field itself isn’t anything like a major championship, but there are quite a few big names and overall, the field is stronger than it was in 2016. Golfers will tee it up on the East Course at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Tokyo, Japan. We don’t know nearly as much about this course as we do most weeks, so you will hear very similar breakdowns across the industry. Many are clinging to the fact that Tom Fazio redesigned the course in 2016, but I’m not sure we should draw too many parallels between this and his other courses on the PGA Tour. If you like agrostology, the fairways and greens here are both made of zoysiagrass while the greens are made of bentgrass. However, I’m not sure if putting well on bentgrass greens at Augusta National is going to correlate well with putting well in Japan.

While I won’t be relying on statistics as much as usual, I do expect distance to play a role this week. The course is a Par 71 that measures nearly 7,500 yards. It doesn’t sound like the course is particularly demanding off the tee and it features very few dog legs. With some lengthy holes on the scorecard, hitting it long and straight off the tee should be an advantage. The zoysia fairways typically provide amazing lies for approach shots, so being accurate will be a bonus as well. The greens themselves are 7,800 square feet on average, which is much larger than tour average. I could be way off base here, but this feels like a week where the randomness increases exponentially. I will certainly be keeping a close eye on ownership projections.
