PGA DFS Core Plays: WGC-Mexico Championship

Top-ranked grinder, Notorious, breaks down his favorite daily fantasy golf plays at various salary ranges for the coming week’s golf tournament. Who should you be building around? Find out below.

Core Plays

I would call it a slightly above-average week for the core plays at the Genesis Invitational. It was certainly a better week than we had for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. All three of the core plays made the cut (Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Rose, and Paul Casey). If you revisited the article late in the week, I talked up Tiger Woods and mentioned that Adam Scott would be using his broomstick putter. After going four-under through nine holes, I can’t believe that Woods finished dead last among the golfers that made the cut. Scott put together a strong final three rounds and won the tournament.

This week we head to Club de Golf Chapultepec, which is located just outside of Mexico City. If you aren’t familiar with Mexico City, it is nearly 7,000 feet above sea level, which is easily the highest altitude golfers will see all year. This course measures over 7,300 yards on the scorecard, but it plays a lot shorter. In fact, most experts say thanks to the altitude, the course will play closer to 6,700 yards, which equates to one of the shortest courses on tour. The fairways here are narrow and tree-lined, which leads to many golfers hitting less than driver on a large portion of the holes.

While we’ve seen bombers play well here in the past, distance isn’t a prerequisite. The one positive for the bombers is that they can club down a little more than the shorter hitters, so they will essentially be hitting irons off the tee compared to three woods. While I will be placing a small weight on off the tee, I will be placing a much bigger weight on approach play. The greens are smaller than PGA Tour average and can be tricky when it comes to scrambling. The greens feature poa annua grass, which as we saw last week can be very tricky.
