WGC-Mexico Championship

The PGA Tour heads south to Mexico this week for the first World Golf Championships event of the 2020 calendar year. The Club de Golf Chapultepec will be hosting this event for the fourth straight year. Even though this looks like a moderate length par 71 course, it doesn’t play to the listed length because the course sits at a high elevation. When that is factored in, the course plays like a shorter 6,700 to 6,800 yard layout. You will see a lot of golfers tee it up with less than driver on almost every hole other than the par fives this week. It’s definitely not venue where distance is required.

Accuracy, approach play, and scrambling will be your key elements to target this week. Golfers who pepper fairways and greens while staying out of trouble will be at a major advantage. Those are the statistical angles I will be looking at. If weather remains calm, don’t be surprised to see a few more birdies this year now that we have more data points with this course. -21 was your winning score last year, with Dustin Johnson hoisting the trophy for the second time in three years.
