The NFL Field Report: Week 14

Article Image

The Field Report is designed to give you a look into the most popular plays from FanDuel’s Thursday Night action.

In order to truly separate your entry from the rest of the field, you need to create a very unique roster. In GPPs especially, playing along with the rest of your opponents won’t get you very far. The rules are much different in H2Hs and 50/50s, but in tournaments where you need to beat ALL of your opponents (e.g. major qualifiers), you need to take risks and use a player or two that you know will be lightly owned.

The percentages in the tables below come from the FanDuel $2 Snap, which has 129,310 entries. The listed players are ones that I have identified for a variety of reasons, but if you don’t see “your guy” here, post below in the comments and I will do my best to get you a percentage.

Quarterbacks

Player % Owned
Russell Wilson ($8.5K) 10.00%
Jameis Winston ($7.8K) 9.60%
Blake Bortles ($7.7K) 9.40%
Cam Newton ($9.2K) 8.90%
Ben Roethlisberger ($8.3K) 6.70%
Tyrod Taylor ($7.5K) 6.60%
Drew Brees ($7.9K) 3.30%
Ryan Fitzpatrick ($7.8K) 3.10%
Eli Manning ($7.5K) 2.70%
Andy Dalton ($8.2K) 2.40%
Aaron Rodgers ($8.9K) 2.30%
Tom Brady ($9.3K) 2.30%
Johnny Manziel ($6.4K) 1.50%
Marcus Mariota ($7.5K) 1.40%
Ryan Tannehill ($6.9K) 1.40%
Blaine Gabbert ($6.4K) 1.40%
Kirk Cousins ($7.0K) 0.60%
Philip Rivers ($7.6K) 0.20%

The spread was a little surprising to see this week at QB, as I thought Wilson would be a lot higher given his recent performance and good matchup. Carson Palmer at 18.4% will cause all of these top guys to go up just a bit come Sunday, and Wilson and Roethlisberger are the most likely to see a bump because of the price similarity. You can make a case for each of the guys at the top of the list, but Winston is a bit higher than he should be. That is not to say I don’t like him, because I do, but Bortles and Newton have been better for much of the year and both carry a high ceiling themselves. Looking at the lower owned players that could be difference makers, both Ryan Tannehill and Kirk Cousins are cheap and in prime matchups that should allow them to provide us with plenty of value.

Running Backs

Thomas Rawls ($7.4K) 21.60%
LeSean McCoy ($7.9K) 17.40%
Doug Martin ($8.0K) 15.60%
Shaun Draughn ($6.5K) 13.10%
Lamar Miller ($6.6K) 10.70%
DeAngelo Williams ($7.3K) 8.70%
Jonathan Stewart ($7.2K) 8.10%
T.J. Yeldon ($6.4K) 7.30%
Matt Forte ($7.8K) 5.60%
Todd Gurley ($7.9K) 5.20%
Chris Ivory ($7.1K) 5.00%
James White ($6.3K) 2.70%

Frank Gore ($6.1K) 2.30%
Devonta Freeman ($8.7K) 1.80%
Ronnie Hillman ($6.4K) 1.70%
C.J. Spiller ($4.8K) 1.70%
DeMarco Murray ($6.7K) 1.20%
Giovani Bernard ($5.7K) 1.00%
Darren McFadden ($6.7K) 1.00%
Latavius Murray (6.2K) 0.70%
Jeremy Langford ($5.4K) 0.50%

There were no real surprises up top for me at RB this week, with all four of my top price-considered plays leading the way. I have Doug Martin higher than the field, but would not argue with any of them in cash. Both DeAngelo Williams and Matt Forte would make for great pivots in GPP this week, and their usage in the passing games makes them a threat to go for a big number every week. Trying to find that really low-owned option that has potential for the big game can be a little tricky, but C.J. Spiller is that guy for me this week. Just understand the risk is higher with him than just about any player on this RB list. Sure, Hightower is likely to see the ball, but Spiller is the guy with the big-play potential, and it wouldn’t be shocking to see him put up a big number.

Steve Johnson ($5.8K) 0.10%

Baldwin and Watkins have both spiked in ownership after back-to-back weeks in which they put up really solid numbers, but just be aware that TDs have inflated their worth a bit. That is not to say they will not put up a good number this weekend, it is just something you need to be prepared for. Last week I called for T.J. Yeldon to put up a big score a week late, and we have another candidate to do the same thing this week in Alshon Jeffery. He was largely disappointing for roughly 30% of field in GPPs, and is someone I like to post a big number this weekend. So, who is the low owned guy I like this weekend for GPP? None other than Randall Cobb at a $7K price tag and just under 3% of the field on him for Thursday night games. The Cowboys can struggle in the slot where Cobb lines up over 90% of the time. I don’t know that I would go with him in cash given the lack of production on the season as a whole, but he will be a great contrarian option for Week 14.
