CBB Menu Choices 3-21
Day 1 of the NCAA Tournament was one of the most frenetic first days in recent tournament history. A lot of close games, upsets, and 4 overtimes! Despite the fact that a lot of games were close, a lot of players underperformed. Because of these average performances by some top names if you didn’t have Adrien Payne you probably didn’t advance to the next round of the various sites Big Tournaments. The Oregon-BYU stack that many employed didn’t work out which just goes to show you that nothing is a sure thing during March Madness. Hopefully most of you are still alive in your respective tournaments and I will set you up with a full platter of delicious options. Onto the Menu…
Appetizers(Value plays, the perfect compliment to your main course.)
I like Hugh because of the major minutes he plays for the Lobos. He is the type of player who isn’t glamorous but he goes to work each game. I love having guys like this on my team because they contribute a little bit to each category at a low cost. Last game against a tough San Diego St team he had 12-4-5. Again, not the sexiest of lines but it will get you 22+ points which is exactly what will get you to Round 3 in tournaments at this price. Especially like him on DS/DK.
UCLA-Tulsa is going to be todays Oregon-BYU but I actually think this game will live up to the hype and anticipated fantasy output. Lots of players to target across the board and one of my favorite cheap plays is Travis Wear. This game is expected to be fast paced and the Wear twins, specifically Travis excel in games like this. He has a pretty good mid range jumper and an underrated ability to finish around the rim. He’s an auto play for me on DK. He gets upper 20s for minutes and can usually put up stats across the three main categories. I’m expecting a 12-6-3 type of line and would not be surprised if he put up 20+ FPS in this one.
Here is another solid lower priced option that plays 36-40 minutes every game. I love rebounding guards and Harrison fits the bill with his 6.2 RPG. He doesn’t get many assists but his rebounding rate more than makes up for that. He’s good for about 10 actual points per game as well. Very underrated player in the James Bell mold. I am all over this pick.
By now you know the Friars use a 6 man rotation with most of their starters gets 35+ minutes. Harris has had an up and down game log in March after a scorching February. He gets a favorable matchup against the Tar Heels who will have trouble defending his ability to knock down long jumpers. Harris is going to be a key part of the Friars for years to come and I think he will show out with a strong shooting performance against UNC. Fun fact about Tyler is that his older brother is none other than Tobias Harris. If you can’t afford the more expensive Friars, this is your man.
Bread & Butter A La Carte(these guys make the meat of your lineup. So get filled up with these choices.)
I’ve written about Brogdon before and he is one of the main reasons that Virgina has been such an effective team this season. He is a stat sheet stuffer and Coastal Carolina will do nothing to stop him from doing work. I don’t worry about his minutes in a blowout situation. It’s important for 1 seeds to start strong and let the rest of the field know they mean business. Typically 1 seeds come out a little flat in their first round game but I don’t see that happening to Virgina. They will grind out and wear down Coastal like they did everyone in the ACC and Brogdon will give you the 25-30 FPS you’re looking for when you put him into your lineups.
Sorry Fanduelers. Mcrae is not available on the FD slate due to their play-in game rules, which I’m not a big fan of. But his matchup and price is just too tasty for me to not mention him on todays menu. McRae slumped to end his season which brought his price down a huge amount. But he is starting to heat back up again and this is the perfect price for his expected fantasy output. He can crush this total and has the capability to put up 40 FPS on any given day. Will be a highly owned pick at this price.
I like Perry Ellis more than most. He’s going to score points no matter who the opponent and is a very underrated rebounder at around 6.6rpg over the last 3. He’s coming off a 30 point outburst during his last game and has flashed that kind of upside before when he dropped 32-8-5 line against TCU back in February. Solid floor with bargain prices and higher ceiling than most people think.
This is another game I will be targeting as I think a lot of people feel they will be priced out of Iowa State players. But I think the Cyclones are still going to be riding the high from their Big 12 tournament win and will start fast. I don’t see anyway they don’t completely assault Central in every faucet of the game. If you’re too scared to play the higher priced options then Hogue is your man. His minutes stay in the 30s and he is a consistent double digit scorer. He is also a solid rebounder who can give you 7-10 boards a game. I love the Cyclones to make the final four and I think Hogue shines tonight.
Dessert(I hope you saved room for these studs because they are well worth the menu price and should be on most of your teams.)
What can I say about McDermott that you don’t already know at this point? He’s going to cost you but if you can find enough value to surround him with you give yourself a very good chance and moving onto Round 3 in your survivor tournaments with him in your lineup. He scores at will and gets a fast paced matchup against ULL. They’ve got no one to keep him from scoring 35-40 actual points. If you can afford him, this is your crème de le crème.
This is must play territory for me. He plays around 38-39 mpg and rarely puts up less than 30 FPS per game. There is a good chance he is going to run wild on UCLA and carry you into the third day much like Adrien Payne did yesterday. A lot of hype and excitement around Tulsa in this game and I don’t think you can afford to fade him.
Do you really think that Marcus Smart isn’t going to put the Cowboys on his back and carry them in this tournament? Love him or hate him the kid can play the game of basketball better than anyone else in the country. He is most valuable on Fanduel because of his knack for stealing the ball but he is in play across the industry for me. I’ve got a feeling we will be seeing the best game of Smart’s career thus far and not even John Stockton himself can do anything to stop it.
This was a hard choice for me because I really wanted to put Deandre Kane here. I like them both but gave the edge to Cotton because he gets a great matchup against the Tar Heels and will be able to basically score at will during this game. I think Providence has a real chance to pull the upset and I don’t think Cotton is ready for his career to be over yet. I love picking seniors in these spots because the talented ones rarely disappoint during tournament time. Cotton looks like a sure thing for 40+ FPS.
