Contrarian GPP Plays

Like most know, today is the NBA trade deadline. It sounds like you can expect several trades to go down today. I would not expect a Jimmy Butler George”:/players/paul-george-1245 to be moved. Just make sure you can edit your lineups after the trade deadline in case you have 1 of the traded players in your lineup. It could be a nice day to play some GPP’s with some newbs having some dead lineups with traded players in their active lineups.

Below, I will take a look at who I think the popular plays at each position will be and offer some pivot plays. Its all about differentiating your lineup in order to take down the top spots in a GPP.

Darren Collison will be over owned with Boogie in New Orleans. I expect his GPP ownership to be over 50% easily and may even be around 70%. It will be hard to fade him tonight but I would throw a lineup in without Collison to see what happens.

There are several options in Darren Collison price range that I like tonight: Reggie Jackson, Elfrid Payton, and Patrick Beverley. Both Jackson and Beverley have been mentioned in trade talks so pay attention to that. Beverley of late has been good for about fanduel points. This matchup vs NO will be high scoring and I would want several players from this game. You can only roster so many Ant Davis and James Harden players in this game. Payton is a true GPP play as he is very inconsistent. He can give you 30+ points in this one or give you less than 10. Reggie Jackson has been losing crunch time minutes to Ish Smith of late but I see a matchup vs Kemba igniting Reggie here. Kemba is not known for his defense and Reggie should accrue around 30 fanduel points. I almost forgot about Jameer Nelson but he is another good play if Gallinari does not play.

James Harden should be the most owned SG today and for good reason. I see no one on NO who can cover him. Solomon Hill may be the main guy to cover Harden. No other options to recommend in Harden’s price range as the next highest priced SG is McCollum. Will Barton will be another popular play tonight. Some other options to consider in his price range are Nicolas Batum and Evan Fournier. I feel Fournier is underpriced at his price tag on Fanduel much like Collison. Using the defense vs position tool, POR allows about 40 fantasy points to SG’s. No Ibaka in ORL puts more of the offensive load on Vucevic and Fournier.

I really do not see any must start plays at SF. The expensive plays are Lebron and KD. I like Terrence Ross at 3500 and he is a nice play punt who should give you around 20 fantasy points. I like Ariza tonight in what should be an entertaining game vs NO. Finally, if Wilson Chandler plays as expected he will be my main play at SF. A lot of risk in these SF plays and I feel if you can pair the right SF’s you should be able to take down a top spot tonight.

Nikola Jokic will be the popular play at PF tonight. Overall, there are some very good PF plays tonight. My main play is Jokic followed by Blake Griffin. In Griffin’s 3 games vs GS this season, he is averaging 21 points 7 rebounds 2 assists and about 2 steals. Those are not great numbers for Griffin but LAC has lost to GS by 13+ in every game. LAC has a lot to prove tonight and they should keep this game close. WCS and Frye are 2 good value plays tonight. WCS will see high ownership as well. He will definitely be in my lineup as he will be getting 30+ minutes per game.

The only 2 Centers I like below 6k are Hernangomez and Nurkic. Nurkic is a very good value play to get more high priced options in your lineup. Aminu has been ruled out tonight and he usually acts as the PF on this team coming off the bench. Drummond and Vucevic will be higher owned options other than Boogie Cousins. I will have some shares of Vucevic vs POR. POR lacks any quality bigs after the trade of Mason Plumlee. I see Vuc having a field day and 40+ fantasy points should be expected as long as ORL can keep this game close.

Value Plays not mentioned: Ben McLemore, Buddy Hield, Tyreke Evans, Mudiay, Ish Smith, Belinelli, Jon Leuer, Koufos

I love Tyreke Evans today as he and Collison should be the main guys for SAC tonight. Tyreke returns to a familiar place as he was drafted by SAC. McLemore is a nice punt play and I am intrigued after reading that Joerger may play him at PF in their small ball lineups. Usually, Ben is only a scorer and does not give you much else in stats. 5-6 rebounds per game would a nice bonus. They were mentioned above but my top 2 value plays priced below 4k on the night are WCS and Nurkic. Both should give you 25+ fantasy points.

Pertaining to some of the players you’ve mentioned, we know that their trades are a done deal. My question is, how can we put trust in some of the value picks that you’ve mentioned ( including Ross) if we don’t know how they will be utilized in relation to their new teams? And I’m not trying to balk at your picks. I’m one of the lower level guys in terms of dfs knowledge so I’m trying to get and understanding.

You have to take risks if you want to take down a GPP. I am not worried about Ross. The guy is a scorer and this Magic team lacks that. He will get plenty of shots and should get at least 25 minutes. I would follow beat writers of these teams on Twitter. Everything I have read in regards to Ross is he will be let loose starting game 1. Vogel seems to think he is a good fit and can shoot. Ross is priced at 3500 on FD. All you really are looking for is 20 pts for that price. Anything over that is a plus

For example, I have seen plenty of guys play a guy with a Questionable tag in NFL for the afternoon games when lineups lock 1pm ET. In low $ GPPS, I would not think twice to throw some darts.

    Thanks Joe

Thanks for that little piece of advice. I cashed in all my lineups on FD and 5 on DK. It wasn’t much but it wasn’t a break even or total loss night for once.

good to hear, i bubbled my cash lineups but played the big sized $4 gpp on fd and turned that into 10 bucks. not much but something. kcp is a classic gpp player and i threw him in last night. played nurkic in my cash lineups but shuda taken him here too.
