Crowne Plaza Invitational, 5/22
This week’s tour stop is the Crowne Plaza Invitational, held at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
Colonial Country Club is another Par 70 course with only two Par 5 holes. Just over 7200 yards in total length, the course is known for it’s narrow fairways and smaller-than-usual greens, and has about 80 bunkers. The tiny greens are complemented by the legendary Texas wind, which has such a profound effect on golfers’ games that this course went from being the 41st(out of 52) most difficult course on the PGA Tour in 2010 to the 13th most difficult in 2012, when the random gusts of wind made for the toughest playing conditions here in ten years. This week, however, the winds are expected to be moderate.
The past ten winners of this event are:
- 2013 Boo Weekley – 14
- 2012 Zach Johnson – 12
- 2011 David Toms – 15
- 2010 Zach Johnson – 21
- 2009 Steve Stricker- 17
- 2008 Phil Mickelson – 14
- 2007 Rory Sabbatini – 14
- 2006 Tim Herron – 12
- 2005 Kenny Perry – 19
- 2004 Steve Flesch – 11
Ten of the last 11 winners of this tournament were 1. American, 2. over 30 years of age, and 3. have played this course at least 4 times previously before winning.
Because of the Par 70 layout, narrow fairways and small greens, important stats to target this week include fairways in regulation, driving accuracy, Par 4 Birdie or better %, one-putt %, proximity to hole, and scrambling.
Happy hunting and good luck this week!
