Dead Money Education #4: Xmas Virgin

PREFACE: I’ve decided to play one $1 beginner cash games every NBA slate I can until I run out of beginner entries and then reevaluate. My knowledge of NBA is pathetic. Outside of the San Antonio Spurs (my home team) I probably can’t name 10 other pros. I have no concept of what differentiates the positions, I couldn’t tell you what team is in which conference, and I have no idea what a good stat-line is. But I like listening to experts talk about DFS on podcasts, so why not give it a go.

“Are you gambling, why are you watching Basketball?” my wife on Christmas Day.

SUMMARY
On a marquee day with most of the league’s biggest shooters in play, I decided to roster none of them and find value elsewhere. I’m quickly realizing that, while good NBA players may be more consistent than good NFL players, everyone knows that and plays them, so your edge comes from finding the basement guys who go off. And not getting that little snowflake next to someone’s name in the app- that’s bad.

I was really surprised how close this contest was with the 10 other “beginners”. The person I beat out for the cash was only .5pts behind me and the entire field was within 40pts of each other.

THOUGHT PROCESS
I knew I wanted to play Kawhi Leonard, he just seemed ultra safe, in a great spot and paying up for Lebron in a questionable matchup didn’t feel right. I knew I didn’t want to punt Center because I was going to get the Bogut/Adams call wrong regardless of whichever I started. Whiteside/Jordan at center seemed like a total tossup, so I went with the cheaper guy, in what I thought would be a bigger game.

The only cheap guy everyone knew about was Taj, so paying up for an elite $10k was going to be out of the question with no other comfortable savings on my radar. Bobby Portis was getting buzz and he was dirt cheap. I didn’t like the idea of playing 3 bulls, but my ignorance left me no other options. At one point I had Derrick Rose in as well, but that was just silly.

Shooting guard came down to Kobe Bryant or Jimmy Butler but even with Kobe in my lineup I didn’t know what to do with the salary relief and even with Kobe’s Xmas history, he didn’t feel right to me.

Tony Parker seemed low upside, but very safe floor in a good matchup at a reasonable price.I didn’t think too hard about it, not a GPP play/sexy pick but with my limited experience I didn’t think I’d find anyone better in the $5k range.

So everything came down to my utility spot. I literally changed this spot 10 times throughout the day – Tim Duncan > Manu Ginobili > Trevor Ariza > Lou Williams > Jordan Clarkson > back to Duncan > Back to Lou. It seemed like a coin flip. I decided I didn’t want 3 Spurs and locked in Williams.

Glad to finally get a “win”. Gonna take an NBA break and focus on NFL over the weekend, but still feeling good about not losing all my money learning NBA.

LESSONS LEARNED
1. The Lakers are going to be a very frustrating team to roster for the foreseeable future. Think I’ll avoid as much as possible.
2. I feel like the slate largely unfolded the way I expected it too- which means I must have gotten very lucky. Fading the GS/CAVS game really scared me, but from a cash game perspective nothing seemed to fit.

QUESTIONS
Does anyone have a good resource to go back and view all the players’ production in DK points terms? Would love to look at who all the top performances were without having to look at box scores and convert everything into DK points.
