EPL Wednesday Jan 22 - Hot Minute Thoughts
Leicester seem to be in a downward spiral at the moment. This could be due to fatigue in a packed schedule but then again, every other time has similar schedules. With Rashford out of this slate due to injury, Vardy is going to be popular although he has not scored in his last three games. This game however seems like one where he should get back on the score sheet. Price is high so leave him for GPPs only.
Son makes much more sense for me even though Tottenham is playing some awful football under Mourinho. With Kane out though, Son is going to be more accountable for creating and finalizing scoring opportunities for his team. He has a decent floor given his increased usage and with four shots in each of his last two games, a goal is the only thing missing. Evidently, Lamela will be the popular cash target especially if Eriksen sits out. In that case, he will probably be everyone’s first selection in cash in the forward slot. If you want to take a GPP shot for a lesser price, Moura might be your guy.
Going down the list, I can only recommend two more players in McNeil and Haller. McNeil has a bit of influence on sets but most of his points come from open play. Haller is more so goal dependent so he does make sense as a cheap play for GPPs if Leicester once again falters.
The only reason to fade Maddison is if you truly think he is going to have an abysmal game. He has the highest floor projection on the slate. Now if you think Son will finally get on the score sheet, fine; but you really need him to score two goals to match the potential of Maddison’s floor. If he sits out due to fatigue, Albrighton seems the sure lock of the slate.
Eriksen is another promising cash play if he starts. Problem is all this transfer speculation around him and his lack of desire in staying with the club. If he plays, it’s perhaps one of the better match-ups he can get. However, if Lamela plays alongside him, that takes a hit to his set-piece role. This feels like a slate where Alli will trump us with a goal at his over-priced salary.
Between Snodgrass and Fred, you have two set-takers at decent prices for cash games. The former has a tougher match-up while the latter has an easier match on paper while playing at home. Clearly I am leaning Fred here unless Mata somehow starts again for United (who is now overpriced).
I’m a Benfica homer so I would love to take the chance on Gedson Fernandes if he is given the start. His motivation is at an all-time high with this move and in a short span of 10 minutes as a sub, it was evident that he wants to make a difference. At $4.3K, I do not mind myself taking a shot with him in GPPs, but that just be my bias speaking.
With Buendia out, looks like McLean will be the chalk cash value play of the slate as he will run the sets for Norwich, albeit in a negative match-up.
I have come to a point where defenders in EPL look all the same to me (with the exception of Digne). You can look down that list and be like, well, I can literally take anyone as their floors are similar and any one of them is capable of getting that random assist. On this slate, the Tottenham fullbacks would make the most sense in my opinion. Tottenham is desperate for a win and Norwich is facing some injury concerns which won’t help their lackluster away record. Therefore, Aurier should have a game.
Cresswell actually took three corners last game and his crossing totals have been high as of late. I can’t recommend him in this tough match-up but just want to point that out.
Either way, I think you will have to pay up here as I see no good value on the table at this position.
Tottenham is struggling to keep opponents out of their net so Gazzaniga is a tough sell. He is though by far the largest favourite to win. If you think Leicester will return to winning form, I like my chances with Schmeichel. Similar to the player I just mentioned as he can concede but his team should get the win and there will be saves to be made. He is my favourite GK on the slate.
I get the idea of taking Pope as your cheap GK but Rashford is the one who truly takes all the shots for United. Without him on the field, shots may be of few. So the reason that I would take Pope is merely for a GPP shot at a sneaky win or clean sheet due to United’s inability to produce up front.
