Euro 2021 - Bettings Odds
The Euro starts today! You can bet I will be watching every game and bring some summer joy into this life! I will be taking a look at some of the odds, analyzing which ones I like, and sharing some of my predictions.
Who will win it all?
After losing out to Portugal in the final of Euro 2016 and then bouncing back and taking the World Cup in 2018, France is clearly the head favorite going into this tournament. If you look at the squad, they are filled with stars and their depth is by far one of the best in the tournament. They could have brought in another whole squad just from the players that weren’t called in for this tournament. With up and coming star Mbappe leading the line and now with the reintroduction of Benzema, France has no excuses to fail. Even beginning in the group of death, this shouldn’t affect any of their chances at reaching the final.
Who has the potential to reach the Final?
With France being the overwhelming consensus to reach the final, who has the next best chance to reach the final? Belgium for one is standing out at +650 odds. Their road to the final is less daunting; although, they may have to face Italy in the quarter-finals. They will easily get there, but it’s all about putting it together in the knockout stage especially with their aging back-line.
Most surprising odds
England! They were even with France a few days back with the same odds to win this tourney outright. They odds have now begun to drop which now stand at +650. The problem here is that their road to the final will be treacherous if everything goes to plan. A first place finish means they play against the third place squad from the group of death. For a round of 16 match that lethal, it is going to be tough. But even if they get by that, they may just have to face Spain next and then potentially another big time opponent. If they manage to get to the final, this will be the best performance I have ever witnessed an England squad achieve. Mind you, if they finish second in their group, they have a better path at going further on paper but I don’t think any team plays to finish second.
Dark Horse who can take it all
Italy at +750. The odds have been improving for Italy who honestly are being a bit overlooked. Considering their recent performances, their group, and their path to the final, placing a bet on these odds is not that bad. Although they may have to face Belgium in the quarters, I think they can easily take that game. The issue will be with the projected game against possibly France in the Semis. But again, this is why we call it a dark horse who no one will probably take to the final. It is certainly going to be interesting to see.
Dark Horse considered an Outsider
There are quite a few teams that can fit this category. My pick here is Denmark. I believe they will finish second in their group and with the talent in the squad, I don’t see how they miss out on that. If they do, they will most likely face Turkey, Switzerland, or Wales in the next round – this is a great chance to progress. Next up may be the Netherlands who I can see being defeated by this Danish side. That results in a Semi-Final appearance, anything can happen then.
These are always tough to hit. Clearly Lukaku has the best chance to rack up the goals in the group stage with their soft-ish group. As a result, he is the heads-on favorite at +600. Next up is Kane who could essentially bag a hat-trick against Scotland and even the Czech Republic – his odds stand at +800. Mbappe is in line as well at +900 to lead the French side to victory but because he starts out in the group of death, I have a hard time taking any player from that group. However, I did take a good look at Benzema at +1600 when odds first came out – he had a remarkable season with Real Madrid as he has in previous seasons. Issue is he just suffered a slight injury in a recent friendly so his fitness is in question. Odds have now dropped to +2500. Last Euro’s golden boot winner Griezmann is also in the running at +2200 but with all the firepower France has this year, it will be tough to repeat.
If I look down the list, the most interesting to me is Depay at +1600. He takes every set for the Netherlands along with penalty kicks. If you think this young side gets far, it will because of that man making him quite the outsider pick.
Breakout Player of the Tournament
Renato Sanches took the crown five years ago, and then proceeded to fall off the map only to recently win the league in France with Lille. So who is next? Who will be awarded the big money transfer at the end of this tournament? This is a tough one as most young studs have already assimilated a place in their squad and are well-known. With that said, I am looking at three players – Malen, Berghuis, and Yazici. They are all talented but never really got the exposure on the big stage. The Netherlands are the best bet to have one of their youngsters breakout given their youthful squad.
All signs point me towards Spain. I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t top their group. Although they have massive talent, the squad is a bit too young to have that much needed experience on the big stages. I also wouldn’t be surprised seeing Croatia have a rocky start and potentially miss out on the next round. Their unison has been in question ever since being a finalist at the previous World Cup. We shall see what kind of chemistry they will have this year with an aging squad.
