Euro Golf Digest - Dutch Clog Edition (KLM Open)

Last Week

Well we found a winner with Matthew Fitzpatrick. Right time to pay up for the top priced golfer as he won in a playoff. Unfortunately we paired him with two duds in Miguel Angel Jimenez and Mathias Schwab. I am officially hopping off the Schwab train.

Our OUT picks fared a little better. Charl Schwartzel finished T8 which is obviously pretty good. Having trouble finding the big $$ fade. Paul Dunne and Renato Paratore both missed the cut which verified their picks. I ended up breaking even overall as some 4/6 lineups scraped some cash thanks to Fitzpatrick. I’ll take that on what should have been a very bad week for me.

Course Info

The Dutch (Par 71 – 6,983 Yards)

The Euro golfers are off to Spijk, Netherlands for the KLM Open. The tournament has been played at The Dutch for the past 2 years so there is a little bit of course history. A lot of water hazards on this course.

Past winners of the event at this course are Romain Wattel (2017) and Joost Luiten (2016).

Focused Stats

1) Strokes Gained Approach (SG A)
2) Driving Accuracy (DA)
3) Strokes Gained Tee To Green (SG T2G)

Not overly concerned with the rough this week so I’m weighing the approach shots as the most important stat of the week. With the water concerns – I have DA as the second most important stat. Need good drives to avoid those hazards. Finally we cap it off with SG T2G as we need to find golfers picking up strokes getting to the green. Putting is less of a concern than actually getting on the green this week.

The Picks

IN = I like him this week. OUT = Not in my player pool

Fashion Clogs ($9000+)

IN: Eddie Pepperell ($11,500) – He let us down in his last appearance in this spot. Couldn’t find anyone sticking out across all 3 focused stats so might as well take Eddie as he is ranked #1 in the field and #2 overall on the Euro Tour in SG A. 7th in SG T2G as well but 54th in the field in DA. Iffy course history – Finished T3 last year but missed the cut in 2016.

OUT: Matt Wallace ($11,000) – Ranked 98th in the field in our most important stat – SG A. Bad approach shots might leave some dunks in the water. 72nd in DA and 33rd in SG T2G. Stats are not aligning for Matt although he did finish T9 here last year.

Every Day Clogs ($7500 – $8900)

IN: Andrew Johnston ($7,800) – Beef is not in the greatest form but time for him to have a breakout week. Amongst the field he is 8th in SG A, 15th in DA, and 3rd in SG T2G. A lot better balance of our focused stats than any of the top guys. He has no course history and recent form is a little bit of a concern but how can you pass on a guys sponsored by Arby’s?

OUT: Haotong Li ($8,900) – Most expensive golfer in this range. Ranked 114th in SG A, 55th in DA, and 74th in SG T2G. He is also coming in with 2 consecutive missed cuts. Not the type of golfer we are looking for this week although he did finish T20 last year here.

Bargain Clogs (<=$7400)

IN: Shubhankar Sharma ($7,300) – Personally I am not a Sharma fan solely because he has burnt some really good lineups of mine in the past. Stats are aligning for him though. 2nd in the field in SG A, 16th in DA, and 16th in SG T2G. Hard to argue with that. Bad recent form but hopefully he can find a way to make the cut and have a run up the leaderboard this week.

OUT: Gavin Green ($7,200) – Streaky golfer so this could burn us. 96th in the field in SG A, 124th in DA, and 112th in SG T2G. He is the opposite of what we are looking for this week from a statistical perspective. Mediocre recent form but he most recently had a 12th place finish.

That is all I have for this week. Good luck and hopefully we can go back to back weeks with tournament winners.

Edit to our Fashion Clog OUT pick. Matt Wallace has withdrawn (see I saw that coming, just call me Nostradamus). We will sub in another OUT pick to make things fair

New OUT pick – Andy Sullivan ($9,800) – Ranked 73rd in the field in SG A. 37th in DA and 15th in SG T2G aren’t too terrible but not great. He missed the cut here last year and isn’t in the greatest form right now.

    Cut Day Update:

Wu Ashun… Ashun Wu.. whatever his name is, is out to a 3 shot lead at -12 overall. Cut held at -1 due to a lot of bad scores on Day 2.

    IN Picks

Eddie Pepperell – Currently 21st place at -4 overall. Has a long way to go if he wants to contend. He shot a +1 today. Need him to have 2 more days like Thursday to provide us the value.

Andrew Johnston – MC. Day 1 killed him as he shot a +3. Shot a -3 and missed the cut by a stroke. Doh. Failed here.

Shubhankar Sharma – MC. He just stunk up the joint both days. +3 both days. Was nowhere near making the cut. Sharma is now in Mathias Schwab territory meaning he will be nowhere near any of my lineups anytime soon.

    OUT Picks

Andy Sullivan – He shot a -3 today and is -3 overall to make the cut. Will need to see what he does on the weekend to see if he was a good or bad pick.

Haotong Li – Looking like a huge mistake with the fade on him. He is currently sitting pretty in 3rd place at -8.

Gavin Green – MC. He had a pretty good Day 1 with a -2. A +3 today though sealed his fate.

Even with the Beef and Sharma bad picks – I still have a shot to make a little bit of money. Have some 6/6s in the Quarter Jukebox. Hopefully one of them can shoot to the top.
