Home Run Derby: Tuesday, July 23rd

Calling home runs, besides great fun, often makes the difference between a wildly profitable night in DFS and missing the cash line. Throughout the 2019 MLB season, I will endeavor to find a few home runs in three salary tiers on DraftKings. Join me throughout the year and call your home runs for monthly and seasonal RotoGrinders prizes. Without further ado, let’s play Home Run Derby!

Follow Joe on Twitter

Throughout this season, I will produce the Home Run Derby for main slates on DraftKings 2-3 days per week — selecting a home run from three different pricing tiers. If you want to call your home runs, please use these tiers for your selections to be eligible for any Derby prizes. Here are the tiers.

Luxury Box – $4,500 and above
Club Seats – $3,500 – $4400
Bleachers – Below $3,500

Hitters must be selected from the DraftKings Main Slate.

Schedule this Week: Monday, Tuesday, Friday

Happy Tuesday, Grinders! Monday brought more home runs than Friday and the contest saw a few multi-HR nights. On Tuesday, we will witness a full 15-game slate. Home runs should be plentiful this evening. Where will they come from? The Astros get another winnable matchup across Mike Fiers at home. The Yankees and Twins brought a ton of bombs last night. Will they repeat? The Brewers’ lefties will square off with fly ball artist, Tanner Roark. Here are my picks for tonight followed by a leaderboard update.

The statistics for each player are for the 2019 season.

Luxury Box

Christian Yelich — OF – $5,900

Yelich in 2019 – .384 ISO, 37.2 FB%, 54.8 Hard%, 93.8 MPH aEV

Roark vs LHH – .237 ISO, 89.5 MPH aEV, 39.0 FB%, 36.3 Hard%

I have used this gimmick in the past and at the risk of sounding trite, I am going to do it again. Take a look at Tanner Roark versus lefties this season per RotoGrinders’ invaluable PlateIQ tool.

The man is dreadful against lefties and will, unfortunately, see a bunch tonight. Even worse, they all bring plenty of power. I am going all-in against Roark tonight with my top two tiers, avoiding any weather concerns, and getting as much favorable Miller Park context as I can.

So, if you are picking Brewers, I mean… of course, you are starting with the best hitter in the National League. Yelich is seemingly unstoppable and brings an even more ferocious .415 ISO to the plate against right-handed pitching. We can exhaust the dictionary of favorable adjectives to describe Yelich’s hitting prowess, but you have other things to do today, I am sure.

Club Seats

Yasmani Grandal — C – $4,300

Grandal in 2019 – .248 ISO, 39.5 FB%, 45.6 Hard%, 90.9 MPH aEV

Roark vs LHH – .237 ISO, 89.5 MPH aEV, 39.0 FB%, 36.3 Hard%

No, need to flash Roark’s PlateIQ description again… Well, actually…

Yeah. That was kind of fun. Anyway, Roark still stinks and Grandal is the only lefty in this tier for the Brewers. Grandal is pretty even with his platoon splits. He might lean a little more fly ball heavy on this side of the plate versus the right side. Either way, I am all out of red smoke. Grandal fits the bill this evening. Go Brewers!

Bleachers

Kyle Seager – 3B – $3,300

Seager in 2019 – .116 ISO, 38.7 FB%, 36.6 Hard%, 90.6 MPH aEV

Payano vs LHH – no sample

The Texas Rangers seem poised to use an opener in front of Pedro Payano, although Payano is tabbed for bulk-relief duty. Ideal candidate, Brett Martin, was forced into 1 2/3 innings of action on Monday night in a loss versus the Mariners. He was the likely candidate as an opener.

Why am I mentioning all of this? Frankly, I don’t know. This tier really stinks tonight. I did not find many options with my initial search and I am sure a couple of better options will pop up for all of you when lineups get released. Unfortunately, Seager seems to be one of the only viable home run candidates this low tonight. Hopefully, Payano enters the game before Seager even gets to the plate and Kyle sees a couple of at-bats against the inexperienced righty.

Just when I thought I would be touting two more home runs and a July lead, strgzer585 had to throw cold water on my celebration. Jsherman003 decided to go off yesterday with three home runs — forcing strgzer585 and me to take a back seat with our pair of home runs each. In all, the MLB brought 34 home runs, a pretty strong number for a Monday slate.

With the action last night, strgzer585 took sole possession of the July lead with myself and the j-sherminator sitting in second place down a home run. July is getting interesting, folks. With only a week left, several shifts could happen before the dust settles.

With fifteen games tonight, will we see a 50-homer night across baseball? Will Mike Fiers fall victim to another Astros onslaught? Will strgzer585 cede his lead? Will your humble narrator jump into the top spot? Friday will come with several updates for what should be a really fun slate. I look forward to combing through all of your picks. Until Friday, good luck, everyone.

I am happy to announce that at the end of each month I will be rewarding the highest home run total with a RotoGrinders T-shirt. Having a rough month? Don’t let up. The RotoGrinders member with the most home runs throughout the season — until the end of August — will be awarded a 3-month Combo Premium subscription to start the NFL season!

Thanks for reading! If you enjoyed the article, stick around for the rest of the MLB season. Want to compete against me? Drop your expensive, mid-tier, and cheap home run calls in the comments (DraftKings pricing). Otherwise, give me a follow on Twitter where I typically post slate-relevant statistics and embarrassing comments about professional wrestling.
