Inside the Bubble

During August, Inside the Bubble will be a blog discussing daily baseball, basketball and maybe even some golf. As long as these sports last, which will hopefully be all month.

Carpe Diem. Seize the day. Maybe you know that phrase from Latin classes. Maybe you watched Dead Poets Society. Maybe you’ve never heard it. Well, now you have. And it is a very short and very powerful phrase. Make the most of today. In little ways. In big ways. In medium sized ways. In life. In sports. And today, inside the NBA bubble. Why is today a “Carpe Diem” type day? Well, while the Eastern Conference seedings are all locked up, there is still a race in the West for the 8th/9th seeds and the play-in game. Such a stupid concept that is generating a bit of excitement. I guess it is working out for the NBA. And the great news is that the teams chasing that potential play-in game include players like Damian Lillard and Devin Booker. Two players who show up when their respective teams need them. Two players who seize the day. Two players who went off in their last must win contests. And two players who will be in most of my lineups today. Who else might seize the day today? Well at least today after 3pm….. Let’s take a look.

In MLB, stack up the Coors game. I feel like I have been ignoring MLB the past two days. Well, that is because I have. The NBA is just too interesting now, especially with all the injury/resting news we get daily. However, there is something interesting in Coors today. It is 90+ degrees and Kyle Freeland is pitching. He just isn’t good and the Diamondbacks hit lefties very well. Plus, they are affordable to stack on DK after scoring 10 runs last night. Get yourself some Walker, Escobar, Ahmed, Marte, even some Kelly. And on the other side, Charlie Blackmon has very strong BVP (limited sample size I admit) against Zac Gallen. And since he is so expensive on DK, you’ll be the only one rostering him. Well, you and me…..

Play Damian Lillard today.. Don’t overthink this one. Play Dame. You can afford him on every site given the likely value that will open up as the day progresses. Or if you played TLC like me in the Brooklyn game. He is mad. He is motivated. He is playing for something. And he gets the non-existent Mavericks perimeter defense tonight. He and Luka will be going back and forth all night long. Roster Dame tonight and watch him seize the day.

Devin Booker again emerging as a NBA superstar. Booker put up 50+ DK points yesterday in an easy Suns win. Today, he gets the watered down Sixers in another must win game. The Sixers are getting gashed every game by opponent guards/small forwards who know how to score. And that is what Booker does – he scores. The risk here is that this game is over by halftime. I’m willing to take that risk and watch Booker go for another 40-55 DK points today.

Which Bucks value piece will “seize the day”? The Bucks have already announced that Middleton, Bledsoe, Donte D and Wes Mathews are out. Giannis is currently questionable. Do we think that they really play Giannis tonight? Who knows, but even if he goes there is going to be plenty of value on this Bucks squad. Check the news flow as the day progresses, but right now players like Pat “Dunkmaster” Connaughton, DJ Wilson, Sterling Brown and Brook Lopez could be very interesting against a horrendous Wizards team tonight. The biggest problem here is that this is the last game of the slate at 9pm. Hopefully, we get definitive news well in advance. If we don’t, I am still going to have a couple lineups with some open spaces for Bucks value.

News just broke that all the Sixers are out. Play all the Sixers. As I was writing, it was announced that Tobias Harris and Al Horford are both out for the Sixers later this afternoon. Combine this with Embiid, Ben and Josh Richardson being out and the entire scoring main cogs are out for the Sixers tonight. Players like Mike Scott, Alec Burks, that Thybulle guy and maybe even Kyle O’Bust are viable cheapo plays on this slate.

It is now almost 3pm and I am going to stop writing here. More news will break in the next few hours. Stay close to it. Let it seep over you. Take it in and then spit out your optimal lineup(s). Seize the day my friends. Best of luck in all your contests tonight.
