Kay Sizzle's CFL Hot Takes
week 1 2017
let’s get to chopping it up….
top stacks i like are reilly/bowman, mitchell/ daniels, jennings/burham.. (notice they are qb/wr combos)
QBs i like
reilly (edm) – produced the most yards, had the most passing attempts and had one of the highest completion percentage last year but that 28/12 td/int ratio burned me too much last year… 9 rushing TDs…. the lost of walker to the nfl will change this offense, but not by much. reilly still has his top target in bowman
mitchell (cgy) – lead the league in passing TDs, 2nd in yards..32/8 td/int ratio. he likes to spread the ball around so he doesn’t have a top target per se… but towards the end of last year him and daniels developed a nice chemistry… after watching a preseason game i think they will pick up right back where they left off… however this team also lead the league in rushing…
Jennings (bc) – last year BC was a run heavy team. they had a 3 headed monster with johnson, jennings and kick-returner rainey (formerly of the tampa bay bucs). this year they revamped their WRs by bringing in Williams but he has been mostly hurt this preseason after injuring his acl… so i think jennings will go back to his old reliable targets on week 1 in arcenauax and burnham.
sleeper qb – Harris (ott) – the defending champs last year had a two headed beast at QB with harris and the now retired burris.. but with burris gone this is harris’s team… if he stays healthy watchout…
QBs i don’t like
collaros/masoli (HAM) QBs – see this is the prime example of a team that splits between two qbs… sometimes from game to game.. some times from play to play…. however this combined duo would have came in 4th in passing, with a combined ratio of 23/20 td/int and 6 rushing TDs.. this is an offense that i love to play but good luck picking the right QB…
Durant (Mtl) – this is a new face in a new place… but I expect the same results.. last year SSK (druants former team) was the worst team in the league mainly because their O-Line was swiss cheese and their def couldn’t stop anybody.. which led to Durant getting a lot of pressure on him. he would force bad throws… with the revevege narrative for week 1 I think Durant will want to show up and show out but I think he will not.. however if MTL can protect him he can do well but not enough to win a gpp…
WRs I like
Bowman (edm) – this dude is the MAN.. he led the league in yards, receptions, targets and had 9 100yds + games… the ONLY minus is he only had 9tds.. but his former teammate, Walker (who is now in tampa bay’s camp) had 10tds so i expect for bowman to continue where he left off but increase his TDs…
Arceneaux (bc) – this dude was top 3 in receptions and lead the league in reciving tds with 13… after BC signed a top flight reciver in chris Williams I had my doubts as to if arceneaux would repeat his numbers.. but with Williams still recovering from injury he hasn’t developed the chemistry with BC qb Jennings so expect Jennings to go back to his top target for week 1
b. banks (ham) – this dude won me money last year… he is a KR/PR that at the beginning of last year was unstoppable in the kicking game, teams started kicking away from him… once HAM started using him on offense.. banks took me to the bank… now don’t get it twisted he doesn’t get a lot of targets but anytime he touches the ball he can take it to the house… last year HAM was deep at WR this year banks has moved up the depth chart on offense I expect him to be the 3rd WR on his team when it comes to targets and receptions.. but in CFL the 3rd wr is as good as gold…
sleeper WR – d, carter (ssk) – as I mentioned before.. ssk was the worst team in the cfl last year…on both sides of the ball so this off season they revamp both sides of the ball.. enter carter, son of HOF chris carter, this dude has ALL the talent in the world.. new face new place but with ssk still having a sub-par glenn at QB I think carter can be the top WR in the league because ssk doesn’t spread the ball around like most teams, I expect his targets and receptions to improve from last year…
WRs I don’t like
e. Jackson (mtl) – last year with OTT, jackson led the team in TD receptions after OTT won the championship this dude jumps ship to MTL… new face new place but his QB is suspect… do I think e. Jackson will do well? yes.. but his QB won’t which in turns affects him… maybe you can play him as a one-off but I’m not high on him for week 1…
RBs i like…
let me start off by saying that in the CFL RB are not used the same way they are in the NFL… most teams run maybe 15-20 running plays max compared to the NFL where they play about 20 running plays minimum…in addition as mentioned before some teams use a QB for goal line carries… with that being said i like to target RBs that are active in other areas of the game…
B. Whitaker (tor) – Dude led all RBs in catches with 81 with 4 REC TDs throw in the fact that he was 1 of only 2 1000yd rushers last year..the down side he only had 3 rushing TDs… BUT he has a new coach in former vikings coach marc trestman and i can see him being the focal point of this offense…
C. rainey (bc) – talk about a triple treat… this former tampa bay buc is used in the kicking game, passing game and running game… he lead the league in KR yds throw in 2 rushing TDs, 3 receiving tds, and 2 punt returns.. this dude can break a slate…
j. messam (cgy) – i don’t want to pay up for RB.. but if i was it would be for him… he led the league in rushing and rushing TDs.. and would have had more TDs had cgy used him more for goal lines than they do their specialty QB… in addition he was second on the team in Rec…ohh did i mention he led the league with 5 100yd games…?
sleeper RB – Gamble (ham) – i wouldn’t be mad at you if you picked on SSK as they was the worst defense last year over all.. HOWEVER, TOR was the worst DEF vs the run and this is where i think gamble can excel although Ham doesn’t run the ball a lot i can see them attacking TOR on the ground…
RBs i don’t like…
Madu Jr. / Powell (ott) – as of this point OTT hasn’t even picked their starting RB and the dude i thought was going to start they cut him over the weekend… but it doesn’t matter who is starting because that CGY defense was the best in the league last year…
Defs i like
Stampeders (cgy) – speaking of defense this defense was one of the league leaders in sacks followed by allowing the least amount of points… this week is a rematch of the grey cup in which OTT won in ot… but ott has lost a lot of players to FA and retirement so i think CGY gets it done…
alouettes (mtl) – i think i mentioned that ssk was the worst team in the league last year? so yeah until they show me something i’m attacking them. not only that but MTL was 2nd behind cgy for least points allowed and 4th in sacks…
Sleeper Def – Lions (bc) – this team didn’t get a lot of turnovers but they was one of the top leaders in sacks followed by top 3 in least points allowed.. they face a potent eskimo team but i think they can apply some pressure..
flex i like…
now these spots is where you get creative… but not too contrarian… i recommend you watch the games…find out who is returning kicks.. the most popular formation is one back and i like to use wr cause a RB can get you about 30 points while a wr can get you 40… and it is a passing league… let me put it to you like this.. last year only drew brees had over 5K in yards… in the cfl they had 3..
Comments
I appreciate this a lot. Need to get my early degen fix of football. Now I have some basis to build lineups. Thanks again!
no problem let me know how you do
Will do. Prolly gonna run 8 lineups in the quarter jukebox and of course plug the best in DK’s free contest.
some notes and observations of game 1 SSK v MTL : cunningham and grant led in DK pts. Can Glenn throw deep? if Marshall’s price stays low he could be a super value play moving forward.
some notes and observations of game 2 CGY v OTT : Stangby had the most value from the game with his 24.2 DK pts for just 3k. Not only that but it seems like harris likes to target him for deep throws. would you be shocked to know that gillanders (12car/80yds) had more rushing yards and carries than Powell (6car/30yds) ? would you rather have a QB that was higher owned, lower priced and puts up more points (mitchell – cgy : 10k, 28.04 DK pts, 22% owned) vs a qb that is lowered owned, higher priced and puts up 1 less point (Harris – ott : 10.6k, 27.6 dk pts, 4% owned)..?
some notes and observations of game 3 EDM v BC : the top WRs from both teams put up a dud. The secondary options shined Zylstra and the duke put up great numbers. White is our 1st 100yd rusher of the season. The BC def couldn’t stop EDM. BUT EDM had a major injury on their DEF, moving forward that is something to keep in mind… without their defensive stalworth EDM still applied pressure on jennings..BC O-line cost them points, if it wasn’t for penalties Rainey would have had a great game
notes and observations of game 4 Ham v Tor : WOW that TOR offense looks damn near unstoppable… but let’s pump our breaks they look very one dimensional… TOR had 524 total yards with Ray putting up a monster 506 yd game.. that would leave just 39 yds rushing… and ONLY 1 passing TDs…? i’m still not impressed…lol the big takaway is the injury to tolliver… he went down on the 2nd play of a game and HAM offense didn’t look the same… i was impressed by TOR defensive line apply pressure but HAM looks like a shell of itself from last year… value play of the game was posey with a 4.4k price putting up 30.7 dk pts…
