MLB Data Detective - Best Player Values (May 23 Early Slate)

As a professional software developer with 15+ years of experience working with data in the finance industry, my passion is using data analysis to gain a competitive advantage. I developed a software application that generates custom stats and player projections from play-by-play logs of every MLB game in recent history, and I will use this blog to share my DFS-related findings as I explore this data.

We have a 5-game early slate today on FanDuel and a 6-game slate on DraftKings. The early weather forecast looks OK, but be sure to keep an eye on the MLB weather page for updates.

If you enjoy my blog, please click the “like” button at the top of this page to let me know how I’m doing.

How did my previous picks do?

To evaluate how my previous stack picks did, I use the cash line score in the large GPP that I entered that day as my target. For yesterday’s main slate the FD cash line was 156.1, which is equivalent to 4.46x value (i.e. FPTS / salary).

Let’s see how my picks did:

Stack Players Total Salary Total FPTS Total Value Verdict?
Colorado Rockies lefties (FD, DK) Blackmon, Tapia, Murphy, Wolters $11,300 83 7.35x Success
New York Yankees hitters (FD, DK) LeMahieu, Hicks (DNP), Morales, Gardner $9,100 55.4 6.09x Success
Houston Astros hitters (FD, DK) Reddick, Gurriel (DNP), Kemp, Marisnick $7,800 21.7 2.78x Failure

My hot streak continued as 6 of my last 7 stacks have been successful. Last night my Rockies stack proved to be a real gem…not only did it destroy the GPP cash line value but it did so with very low ownership. My Yankees and Astros stacks were both short-handed as each had one player scratched from the starting lineup and I wasn’t able to make it back to the computer in time to update them. The Yankees stack was an unbridled success anyway thanks to big games from LeMahieu and Gardner. Unfortunately my Astros stack failed to deliver.

This 2-for-3 day brings my overall season record for stack recommendations to 49-46, a 52% success rate. For comparison, the expected success rate of an average stack is approximately 20% (since I’m using the cash line from large GPPs as my success criteria).

Now let’s move onto today’s games…

Which pitching matchups should we target?

My Favorite Hitter Stacks

I will choose hitters from the projected starting lineups primarily based on their calculated “value”, which is their projected FPTS divided by their salary. The number before each player’s name is his projected position in the batting order.

Boston Red Sox right-handed hitters (FD, DK)

2) Mookie Betts – 13.62 proj FPTS & 3.1 value on FD ($4400), 10.43 proj FPTS & 2.04 value on DK ($5100)
4) Michael Chavis – 12.12 proj FPTS & 3.19 value on FD ($3800), 9.48 proj FPTS & 1.75 value on DK ($5400)
6) Christian Vazquez – 10.61 proj FPTS & 4.08 value on FD ($2600), 8.35 proj FPTS & 1.9 value on DK ($4400)
7) Steve Pearce – 9.38 proj FPTS & 4.26 value on FD ($2200), 7.18 proj FPTS & 2.32 value on DK ($3100)

Boston’s offensive struggles to start the season seem like a lifetime ago, and now they’re back to being one of the top offenses in the league. That should continue today as they will face Clayton Richard, who will be making his first start of the season. Throughout his career Richard has been very generous to right-handed hitters (career .289 avg & 1.52 WHIP), so I’m going to build a pure-righty stack to capitalize. Richard will likely be on a strict pitch count (supposedly around 50-60 pitches), but that’s not a bad thing for Boston. Nunez is another high-value punt play who is interchangeable with Vazquez or Pearce.

New York Yankees hitters (FD, DK)

2) Aaron Hicks – 12.13 proj FPTS & 3.28 value on FD ($3700), 9.17 proj FPTS & 2.04 value on DK ($4500)
4) Kendrys Morales – 9.67 proj FPTS & 3.72 value on FD ($2600), 7.48 proj FPTS & 2.2 value on DK ($3400)
6) Brett Gardner – 10.79 proj FPTS & 3.72 value on FD ($2900), 8.4 proj FPTS & 1.87 value on DK ($4500)
8) Thairo Estrada – 9.22 proj FPTS & 3.69 value on FD ($2500), 7.35 proj FPTS & 1.93 value on DK ($3800)

The Yankees will be a popular play again today after the offensive onslaught they’ve been on at Camden Yards and my gut tells me that they’re due for a letdown, but on paper this looks like another good matchup for them. Dylan Bundy occasionally has games where he looks like an ace, but overall he hasn’t been a very good pitcher (career 4.64 ERA, .255 avg, 1.32 WHIP) and he has surrendered at least 3 earned runs in 6 of his 9 starts this season. It’s hard to know what to make of his platoon splits because they’ve been pretty even in recent years but over the course of his career he has been significantly worse against left-handed hitters (.277 avg, 1.45 WHIP). Even ignoring hitter handedness and focusing on value, however, I landed on a stack consisting of mostly lefties so our bases are covered.

Best Hitter Values

For reference, here are my app’s top hitter values by DFS site and price range. I use my own algorithm to generate projected FPTS for hitters, which is primarily based on the following:

  • Hitter’s average FPTS per plate appearance against similar pitchers over the past 3 seasons
  • Hitter’s projected # of plate appearances (i.e. the league-wide average for his batting position)
  • Pitcher’s average FPTS per plate appearance given up to similar hitters over the past 3 seasons (for starter & bullpen)
  • Ballpark factors (e.g. the impact of the ballpark on fantasy production)

Value is calculated as projected FPTS / salary.
