MLB Data Detective - Best Player Values (May 24)

As a professional software developer with 15+ years of experience working with data in the finance industry, my passion is using data analysis to gain a competitive advantage. I developed a software application that generates custom stats and player projections from play-by-play logs of every MLB game in recent history, and I will use this blog to share my DFS-related findings as I explore this data.

We have a 14-game main slate today on FanDuel and DraftKings. The early weather forecast looks OK, but be sure to keep an eye on the MLB weather page for updates.

If you enjoy my blog, please click the “like” button at the top of this page to let me know how I’m doing.

How did my previous picks do?

To evaluate how my previous stack picks did, I use the cash line score in the large GPP that I entered that day as my target. For yesterday’s early slate the FD cash line was 137.3, which is equivalent to 3.92x value (i.e. FPTS / salary).

Let’s see how my picks did:

Stack Players Total Salary Total FPTS Total Value Verdict?
Boston Red Sox righties (FD, DK) Betts, Chavis, Vazquez, Pearce $13,000 53.7 4.13x Success
New York Yankees hitters (FD, DK) Hicks, Morales, Gardner, Estrada $11,700 27.7 2.37x Failure

Although both the Red Sox and Yankees scored a good number of runs, I didn’t do a great job of choosing the best players for my stacks. Luckily my Red Sox stack managed to beat the GPP cash line value thanks mostly to a late Pearce HR. My Yankees stack missed the mark.

This 1-for-2 day brings my overall season record for stack recommendations to 50-47, a 52% success rate. For comparison, the expected success rate of an average stack is approximately 20% (since I’m using the cash line from large GPPs as my success criteria).

Now let’s move onto today’s games…

Which pitching matchups should we target?

Let’s first take a look at how the probable starting pitchers rank in terms of FPTS given up to hitters per plate appearance (since the start of last season):

My Favorite Hitter Stacks

I will choose hitters from the projected starting lineups primarily based on their calculated “value”, which is their projected FPTS divided by their salary. The number before each player’s name is his projected position in the batting order.

Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed hitters (FD, DK)

2) Justin Turner – 11.88 proj FPTS & 3.96 value on FD ($3000), 9.2 proj FPTS & 2.14 value on DK ($4300)
5) David Freese – 9.89 proj FPTS & 4.12 value on FD ($2400), 7.65 proj FPTS & 2.01 value on DK ($3800)
7) Enrique Hernandez – 9.41 proj FPTS & 3.48 value on FD ($2700), 7.33 proj FPTS & 1.93 value on DK ($3800)
8) Austin Barnes – 8.74 proj FPTS & 3.8 value on FD ($2300), 6.72 proj FPTS & 1.77 value on DK ($3800)

Stratton is no longer scheduled to start and has been replaced by Steven Brault, who is solid against left-handed hitters but a gas can against righties (career .290 avg, 1.71 WHIP). This doesn’t exactly play to the strength of the Dodgers lineup but they still have some decent righties with high projected value who should be able to capitalize on this great matchup.

New York Mets hitters (FD, DK)

1) Amed Rosario – 10.4 proj FPTS & 3.71 value on FD ($2800), 8.28 proj FPTS & 2.12 value on DK ($3900)
3) Todd Frazier – 11.15 proj FPTS & 4.46 value on FD ($2500), 8.49 proj FPTS & 2.36 value on DK ($3600)
4) Pete Alonso – 11.83 proj FPTS & 3.03 value on FD ($3900), 9.41 proj FPTS & 1.78 value on DK ($5300)
5) Wilson Ramos – 9.92 proj FPTS & 3.97 value on FD ($2500), 7.7 proj FPTS & 1.97 value on DK ($3900)

The Mets offense has cooled off lately with Conforto on the IL, but they’ll be in a great spot to bounce back tonight against young gas can Gregory Soto (10.80 ERA, .381 avg, 2.20 WHIP). Soto continues to look like he’s in over his head pitching in the majors, so it’s almost a lock that hits & runs will flow as long as he lasts on the mound. The only real concern is that he hasn’t lasted more than 4 innings yet, so unless he suddenly becomes a good pitcher then the Mets will face the Detroit bullpen for most of this game. Usually that’s a good thing for opposing lineups, but based on what we’ve seen so far I’d rather have Soto on the mound. As for choosing hitters, the entire Mets lineup offers good value today so take your pick. I included the red-hot Alonso but if you plan to pay up for a top pitcher and need the salary relief, then J.D. Davis and Carlos Gomez also make excellent high-value punt plays.

Best Hitter Values

For reference, here are my app’s top hitter values by DFS site and price range. I use my own algorithm to generate projected FPTS for hitters, which is primarily based on the following:

  • Hitter’s average FPTS per plate appearance against similar pitchers over the past 3 seasons
  • Hitter’s projected # of plate appearances (i.e. the league-wide average for his batting position)
  • Pitcher’s average FPTS per plate appearance given up to similar hitters over the past 3 seasons (for starter & bullpen)
  • Ballpark factors (e.g. the impact of the ballpark on fantasy production)

Value is calculated as projected FPTS / salary.
