MLB Picks for Tuesday September 24th

Part 1 – 50/50’s/Double-ups/Head-to-Head

When playing 50-50’s/double-ups or head-to-head, you want guaranteed points. This is not where you roll the dice on all or nothing players. The idea is to simply produce a solid, well balanced team. It may not be explosive, but it doesn’t matter whether you finish in first place or not, you just need to cash.

Yu Darvish – If you can afford him, Darvish is your best bet tonight. He is a huge favorite home to the Astros. In his career Yu has 54 Ks in 37.2 against the Astros.

Matt Cain – Cain has great value today. He will be at home facing a Dodgers lineup that will likely be minus a few starters. Since the All-Star Break Cain has an ERA of 2.34 and a whip of 1.09

Doug Fister – The Tigers are another big favorite today and should finally clinch the division title. I don’t think this Twins lineup would make the playoffs in AAA. Fister should be good for 7IP, a few Ks and a Win.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia – Salty does all his damage against RHP and gets to face RHP Tyler Chatwood in Coors field. I love his value tonight.

Derek Norris – Norris smashes lefties and is extremely cheap. He is hitting .333 since the All-Star Break.

First Base

Tonight looks like a good night to pay up for a 1B.

Chris Davis – I love Crush Davis tonight. He is hitting .309 at home and kills RHP pitching with 39 homers and a .320 AVG.

David Ortiz – Big Papi in Coors field. Need I say more?

Second Base

Dustin Pedroia – I will be using a lot of Red Sox tonight, and I think you are wise to do the same.

Chase Utley – Utley is always in play VS RHP. He is hitting .300 against Righties and has 12 of his 18 homers against them. Henderson Alvarez is allowing LH batters to hit .306 off of him.

Jedd Gyorko – Gyorko is a nice value play tonight against Wade Miley. Gyorko hits LHP well and has 12 HRs in his last 46 games.

Troy Tulowitzki –Tulo is pretty much an automatic play at home.

Stephen Drew – Drew is having a very nice season and is night and day better against RHP. Facing Tyler Chatwood in Coors Field should only pad his stats.

Third Base

Miguel Cabrera – There is really no analysis needed to take Miggy any night. Tonight he faces LHP Scott Diamond. Cabrera is hitting lefties at a .377 clip and owns a career .476 AVG against Diamond.

Josh Donaldson – There are rumors he might receive some MVP votes. Who saw that coming? He smashes LHP with a .343 AVG and 1.065 OPS.

Aramis Ramirez – Aramis is hitting .345 in Sept and is 8/18 VS Freddy Garcia.

Shane Victorino – He can score points in so many different ways. I think he is a must play in Coors field tonight.

Carlos Gomez – He is facing Freddy Garcia. Freddy Garcia is awful. Carlos Gomez is not.

Coco Crisp – Crisp is having a fantastic season and owns Vargas. He is hitting .359 off Vargas with two 2B and two big flies.

Andrew McCutchen – Cutch is a great play any night, but especially against LHPs where he is hitting a sick .400

Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter – The Tigers will score a bunch of runs tonight and clinch. Both of these players have great value.

Part 2 – GPP’s

GPP’s are a whole new ball game. You need guys to have huge nights. GPP’s are all about upside. All or nothing players can become GPP gold. Value players are just as important as your star players.

Ubaldo Jimenez – Since the All-Star Break Jimenez has a 1.77 ERA and 80 Ks in 71 IP. Never a pitcher I feel comfortable with, but it is hard to ignore those numbers. He has huge GPP upside.

Gerrit Cole – In his last 3 starts he is 3-0, has an ERA of 1.38 with 28 Ks in 20 IP. Now that is dominant.

Tyson Ross – Ross is extremely cheap on most sites and is capable of a big K game every time out. The D-Backs big bats are all Right handed and Ross has a 2.05 BAA VS RH hitters.

Jonathan Lucroy – Lucroy has big game potential and is facing Freddy Garcia, as you may have guessed I am not big on Garcia.

A.J. Pierzynski – Great price, great matchup tonight.

First Base

Let me just say I love both Big Papi and Crush Davis in this spot as well.

Billy Butler – The Royals are still fighting for a wild card berth and Butler has smashed LHP throughout his career.

Mike Napoli – If Big Papi does not play, Napoli could have a big game. He is hitting .327 in Sept.

Second Base

Brandon Phillips – Phillips is dirt cheap on some sites. He is hitting in the middle of a potent lineup and has a career .375 AVG against Niese with 2 homers.

Ian Kinsler – Leading off for an explosive offense, Kinsler is a nice GPP play tonight. He has 11 hits in his last 8 games including 3 doubles a triple and a bomb.

Omar Infante – Infante is very quietly having a great season. His price is very low on most sites and he makes a nice value play against Scott Diamond.

Jimmy Rollins – Jack and a bag potential, Rollins is hitting .364 over his last seven days.

Jordy Mercer – Pencil him anytime he faces a lefty.

Third Base

Adrian Beltre – I love Beltre tonight at this price. He has MASSIVE GPP upside. Is this the night he breaks out of his slump?

Todd Frazier – Frazier is a great value play tonight. He has 2 homer potential and is 3/6 VS Niese.

Will Middlebrooks – He is fairly cheap and playing in a hitter’s paradise. He is a great Boom or bust option.

Giancarlo Stanton – Stanton has huge GPP upside. Tonight he is home to a career minor league pitcher in Zach Miner. For some reason Stanton hits a ton better at home with a .313 AVG. It is a huge ball park, but Stanton can make it look small.

Michael Cuddyer – Cuddyer is leading the NL in hitting with a .334 AVG and is batting .353 at home. Tonight he is home to John Lackey who he has a career .318 AVG against with 4 bombs.

Juston Upton –“Tyler Thornburg(player-profile)”:/players/Tyler_Thornburg-13513 has pitched well but Upton is always in play for GPP’s at this price.

Adam Jones – Despite the numbers from Redmond of late I expect Baltimore to hit him tonight. Jones is 2/5 off Redmond with a 2B and HR.

Ryan Ludwick – Love him as an OF punt tonight.

Stacks Of The Night

Last week I named 6 stacks with the potential for big games and 5 of them scored 7+ runs. Let’s hope I can be as accurate this time.

Boston Red Sox –The Red Sox have scored the most runs in baseball and are in Coors field against an average pitcher at best. Stack away!

Texas Rangers – The Rangers are always capable of putting up a big number at home. They face Brad Peacock and are fighting for their playoff lives.

Detroit Tigers – For most of the night last night, it looked like they were on their way to a division title, and then the bullpen blew it. They should be able to lock it up tonight against Scott Diamond. Pitching at home, Diamond has a 6.60 ERA and a 3.35 BAA.

Sleeper Stacks

Now that we named some obvious ones, her are a couple that others may not be on.

Baltimore Orioles – The Orioles are a scary team at home. They lead MLB in home runs and are 5th in runs scored. They are still playing for something. Redmond is a different pitcher on the road with an ERA of 6.75 and a BAA of 3.03.

Oakland A’s – They A’s are killing everyone right now, especially lefties. They lead the league in HRs, RBIs, OPS and SLG against LHP. Vargas has been struggling of late with an ERA of 8.41 in his last 3 starts.

Milwaukee Brewers – Freddy Garcia is terrible, forget about his last two starts. He can blow up at any given time.

Good luck grinders!
