MLS - Friday Soccer Showdowns Preview
MLS Friday Night Showdowns – November 20th
As previously explained, the SCA metric is one of the best determinants of how a team operates and succeeds. This metric allows you to identify the main contributors to the success of their team. In other words, it signals which players make the difference on the field. I invite you to read all about it here.
New England v. Montreal
This seems like an obvious New England win, especially with home advantage. On the season, New England won three out the four games versus Montreal. That is to no one’s surprise as Montreal barely squeaked into the expanded playoff format this year. Therefore, I think we all know our starting point and that is to mainly stack New England.
It is pretty evident based on the SCA metric that New England supersedes Montreal by a significant level. With Gil back in the mix and healthy for a full 90, he is definitely the most popular Captain choice of the slate. He will be taking the majority of sets but more importantly, ever since he got back from his injury, he has achieved an SCAper90 score of 7.87 in just four games. That is remarkable and speaks to the talent of this player.
However, if you do want to go for a New England stack, you will probably have to take shots a bit lower in salary for your Captain pick. Bunbury, Bou, and Buksa were the top three goal scorers for New England this year. As seen from the chart, only Bou had a reasonable SCAper90 score. However, this is Montreal – a team who concedes a lot to their opponents in shots and chances. They are interesting choices from a GPP standpoint.
Buttner is the other pick I can see being popular in the Captain spot. His open play crossing is above average and in a game where domination will probably prevail for New England, expect him to score in the double digits.
I won’t look too much into Nguyen regardless of his high SCAper90 score as that is mostly because he took over sets when Gil was not present. That is not the case anymore as Gil is back. The same can be said for the entire Montreal squad. The only real choice for this squad would be Quioto, but his price makes it really tough considering the game script. If you think Montreal somehow wins this game, then it will most likely be because of Quioto. The other selection I would include in my shortlist would be Sejdic as he tends to sometimes split corners with Quioto. His price is low enough to get some Montreal exposure on set pieces.
Showdown Lean – NE 5-1 or 4-2 stack
Nashville v Inter Miami
This match is much more even in nature. Clearly Lewis Morgan overpowers any other player in terms of the SCA metric and is destined to be the most popular Captain choice. However, given that there’s not much value and a lot of interesting high end players, we may have to take a shot at one of the lower priced guys in this spot.
Mukhtar is Nashville’s engine and should either take most, or split, set pieces with Lovitz. You will need some mixture of these two players in your lineups. As for Miami, the other two I am looking at are Higuain and Pizzaro. For the talent they have, they have certainly underwhelmed this season. They are however strong GPP plays as their SCAper90 score is above three.
The rest of the pack falls on you. You cannot really determine much until the starting lineups are released. The metrics are there for you to use and base your selections on.
