MLS is back - Friday Night
Friday slate – 4 games
After Piatti’s performance last time out versus the Whitecaps, expect him to be the popular pick tonight. He takes more sets than Pozuelo so he makes sense in all formats. If you want to be different, clearly Pozuelo would be the pick but for $1K less and dual position eligibility, Piatti makes a ton of sense. Altidore should also get on the score sheet today after seeing how bad Vancouver is. Toronto dominated them with about 75% possession the entire game. It should be a tad different approach from Vancouver this time around, but expect Toronto players to be the most popular on this slate.
Pulido is destined to have a great season. Any international player coming to the MLS from overseas always tends to do above and beyond. Price is tough to pay but the upside is there. That leaves me saying the same thing about Jara but in this case I think age is getting to him. He did absolutely nothing in two games versus a weak Nashville team so until he starts scoring, I can’t trust him. I would rather trust Locadia in this case who seems to have the go ahead to take shots.
Russell and Barrios are two players that have on their side the majority of set taking duties. However, it always depends on how many sets they actually get. Productivity is always a risk with these two but if they meet their ceiling level, then it always pays off. If you look a further down, you get Quintero who emerged as the lead set taker for Houston in the MLS Tournament recently. He certainly does make sense tonight.
Then you look down the list and you are basically left with nothing. DK really did price up all the good options leaving little to no value on the plate. I’d consider Busio if KC decides not to start Russell. Then he may have some sets to himself.
I already mentioned Pozuelo up top but the price is tough when he’s not taking the amount of sets he did compared to last year. Upside is always there but he is now a GPP play only in my eyes. On the other hand, we know Gregus has a monopoly over sets so he makes total sense. The problem again is with value so you are going to have to ace these high priced guys in hopes that your two or three high priced studs have the better games.
For DC United, the two main set takers will be Higuain or Gressel. The former did not start one single game in the MLS Tournament which allowed Gressel to take most sets. If this continues tonight, Gressel is priced very low against a solid opponent to reap fantasy points on. Maybe the only misprice at the moment. From what we know about Memo Rodriguez is that he will take shots but sometimes he won’t last the full 90 minutes – that is the risk you are taking there. Medujanin is probably the lowest priced set-taker but he plays for a team who hardly gets any attacking movement which results in a low number of set pieces.
For value pieces, I need to look under the $5K mark. The objective here is to try to stack three studs and pay down elsewhere. If some Toronto bench players start tonight such as Endoh, it is not the worst play. Other guys I am looking at include Segura, Acosta, Santos, and Pomykal.
My MLS approach has always been to pay down at defender. The main reason being that secondary assists are given in fantasy scoring so most likely that will belong to one of the attackers. The upside is always there. The high scores are mostly forwards and midfielders. You want to get a piece of that. Therefore, I cannot recommend any high priced defenders, aside from maybe Adnan who is on sets for Vancouver – but again, their team sucks. DeLeon usually plays in a midfield role but is listed as a defender – given the matchup tonight, you can use him in GPPs.
Don’t get me wrong, there are good choices tonight but I’m just reiterating what my approach usually is. Ziegler takes some sets and I believe is on PK’s for Dallas. Martins tends to cross a lot but is always a risk. The bottom half is kind of scarce but you just need to analyze lineups when they are released and see if there are any cheap wing-backs in play. Nelson from Dallas sometimes is listed as a wing-back, although the production sometimes misses, he is super cheap.
Westberg will be the typical cash play due to Toronto being overwhelming favorites tonight. One goal against though can ruin it and he won’t meet value. I may just pay down here as well. Considering Hamid is so low in price, I would hope DC pulls off a win. Hasal will get lots of shots against so the opportunity for a bunch of saves is in play. It is honestly a position where you close your eyes and hope for the best!
