FANTASY HOCKEY IS BACK FOLKS!! This is the greatest time of year for so many diehard NHL fans. We can put down our PS4 controllers and finally watch some real action. Get amped! Yes, that means the legendary crew is back; Pierre McGuire, Doc Emrick, and Eddie Olczyk are back in our living rooms for a while. For many of us, tonight is like the birth of a child; it’s a new season in which arenas will be packed and goal horns will be buzzing. I’m glad that I made the transition to NHL DFS last year because it was so much fun. My favorite part about getting better is learning from so many industry leaders. Not only that, but I’ve followed hockey my entire life and have been connected to the game in a number of different capacities.

I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to get started with you research if you haven’t already, mainly because you will be ahead of the game and it’s a unique game. Most people find different ways of competing in their respective DFS contests, whether they take it serious or not, but I’m here to give you my thoughts on the opening night of hockey. My goal is to provide daily content and picks, so we will see how this all goes.

Are you a newcomer to fantasy hockey or are you a veteran? Either way, one can agree that we all have our strengths and weaknesses in the DFS world. Hockey is my favorite sport, so I’m going to try and start a discussion. It’s very important to get familiar with the platform you are going to be using, mainly because it makes your research easier. Some of the methods include using advanced statistics, while others are simply playing match-ups and gut-feels. There is no right or wrong way of approaching DFS, so I’ll list some of the elements I combine with my research below:

These elements are not necessarily useful to everybody, but employ them if they work for you.

  1. G = Goals
  2. A = Assists
  3. FirstA = First (primary) Assists
  4. Points = Points (Goals + Assists)
  5. Shots = Shots on goal
  6. iFenwick = Individual Fenwick = Shots on Goal + Shots directed at net that missed net
  7. iCorsi = Individual Corsi = iFenwick + Shots directed at net that were blocked
  8. /60 = Rate per 60 minutes for each stat
  9. IGP = Individual Goals Percentage = The % of goals scored while player was on ice that the player scored
  10. IAP = Individual Assists Percentage = The % of goals scored while player was on ice that the player has an assist on
  11. IPP = Individual Points Percentage = The % of goals scored while player was on ice that the player had a point on
  12. Shot/Gl
  13. Thru %
  14. GV
  15. Miss%
  16. Shot%
  17. Shot/Gl

My picks are listed by position and analyzed using a number of different tools. If you are looking for deeper analysis on each pick, then please contact me and I will be glad to give it to you. Disclaimer: These picks are by no means going to guarantee you any type of results. These are picks that I have chosen and this is not a formal recommendation by any means. I’m trying to help others by giving my thoughts and such, but choose at your own risk. I’m totally fine with you following my picks, but don’t think you HAVE to follow my system. There are a number of resources available to a DFS hockey player to ensure your readiness.

Before I begin, I forgot to note that if you don’t see a player listed, it’s because I’m not very high on them. I will obviously still have stacks that aren’t listed, but those lineups will sort’ve be “dead” lineups to me. If they end up going off, then my picks here failed. I hope that doesn’t happen, but it could. We really can’t control the players, but what I’m getting at is simple; the picks you see are guys I like and the guys you don’t see are guys I’m not a fan of on this particular night. Remember, this will change daily.

Left Wings

  1. Max Pacioretty
Max is an explosive winger who can almost guarantee you fantasy points on any given night, not to mention they play TOR
  1. Tomas Fleischmann
Tomas is a very good player who was always stuck in a tough system. Sneaky GPP play that I will look into. Great matchup
  1. Teuvo Teravainen
Off the radar of many and starting on the top line. I have to pencil him into one of my lineups.
  1. Rick Nash
Big body, physical, has the tools to get dirty or show off. The drought could end tonight.
  1. Chris Kreider
A solid pick with the chance to provide points in a close low-scoring game.
  1. Jiri Hudler
I truly think this guy is so underrated. He doesn’t get the credit he deserves because he’s in Western Canada
  1. Johnny Gaudreau
I expect a lot from this kid again this year. Great talent and always a threat
  1. Daniel Sedin
Daniel is going up against either Romo or Hiller. Should be able to put up points
  1. James Van Riemsdyk
he always has the chance to do damage even if it’s unikely. I like him in some of my lineups, given I’ll have a good amount

Right Wings

  1. Radim Vrbata
scoring threat in my opinion. weak goaltending could provide him with chances
  1. Marian Hossa
dominant player who gets a ton of shots on goal and can break out at any moment
  1. Kevin Hayes
a very talented kid that has a really good shot, something that will be needed to beat Crawford
  1. Michael Frolik
value. adds great depth to that Flames. He was reliable and able to put up points on a consistent basis.
  1. Dale Weise
One of my favorite plays of the night. Both Toronto goalies are a mess. Also, Bernier has gone 1-5-3 with a 3.07 GAA in nine career starts against Montreal. Something to keep an eye out for is the starting lineups
  1. Brendan Gallagher
goal scorer, playmaker, you name it! Brendan is a great choice in my opinion against a bad Leafs team in rebuild mode
  1. Marián Gáborík
Should be able to do some damage against a weak Sharks team. I’m looking to exploit certain matchups and this is one
  1. Alexander Semin
ONLY posting Semin because of his matchup against Toronto and his talent. DO NOT roster him if you are throwing a SINGLE BULLET into the ring.

  1. Jeff Carter
Such a skilled player that can do it all. This game should be high scoring in LA’s favor IMHO
  1. Tyler Toffoli
Another pick I really love tonight. This kid is going to have a breakout year if he can stay healthy and provide 100% every night.
  1. Anže Kopitar
The Kings are loaded with talent and Kopitar is another fabulous player I’ll be rostering in one of my lineups.
  1. Nazem Kadri
I know, strange! Kadri is a ridiculously talented player that is just in the wrong environment. He could surprise us tonight.
  1. Sean Monahan
He was really cheap last year and always had an impact when I rostered him
  1. Joe Pavelski
_If I had to roster a Sharks player, then it would be this stud. I like the Sharks this year, but not against Quick. Quick seems to be a risk to go against. HOWEVER, I will have my share of Sharks stacks.
  1. Henrik Sedin
Automatic roster spot for me. I think Henrik and his brother are clearly ready to start a fresh season and avenge last year’s horrible ending to a great year

  1. Drew Doughty
Drops bodies and contributes offensively which I love. Very good D-man.
  1. Brent Seabrook
Very good defensemen that I didn’t roster enough last year. It’s about finding the pieces to the matchup and it’s hard to exploit NYR vs. CHI, but you have to throw darts at the wall sometimes.
  1. Duncan Keith
Great leader who can put up good fantasy points on most nights
  1. Ryan McDonagh
_If he can stay healthy, then I like him to have a very strong year. He should have a good game against the Hawks.

  1. Carey Price
My VERY TOP pick of the night, IF Toronto can get at least, 30 shots on goal. I think he can have a great game, but I will also be monitoring my usage because I will have a good number of lineups. Some will obviously consist of Toronto players and so I won’t roster Price.
  1. Jonathan Quick
_ love this pick because no matter how bad the offensive struggles were at times last year, he was still a monster in net. Great pick vs. a good Sharks team._

Please, feel free to leave some feedback by dropping a comment and lets discuss. I hope everybody does well with their lineups. Good luck Grinders!!

    thx rollin with quick

Thanks for taking the time to post this. I saw that you asked for feedback and thought I’d give my thoughts. Overall, there are a lot of good things here. I liked how you wrote about the stats you use to make picks but found the picks sections below underwhelming. I was expecting all of the player blips to be references to the above stats and how this player excels or flounders within the matchup. What I read, while not devoid of insight, didn’t add much to the overall discourse on the player’s fantasy potential. I think you could benefit from cutting down a bit on player quantity and pick a couple of your favorites and elaborate more on each. Thanks again!

Thanks for the feedback cards!! Honestly, I’ll most definitely do that for tomorrow night’s slate. You have my word that I will explain why I added this player, using those metrics above. Thanks for the read!

  • deactivated70850

It’s a learning curve for me in terms of organization and I really appreciate the insight. I’ll be improving the format as we go on, using advanced stats and providing my opinions using it.

  • JetD9

Great post man. Hope this becomes daily

  • deactivated70850

Thanks man! Thats the plan. I obviously won’t be right on everything, but I had a lot of good picks mixed in with the bad. I hope it helps!
