NFL Draftkings $50-$500 Challenge

I am have been toying around with the idea of creating a challenge for myself this NFL season to improve my cash game skills. I have dedicated probably about 95% of my time and money into GPPs since starting DFS and I really need to work on my cash games skills and lineup creation. With the start of a new season I think week 1 is a great place to start. I plan on breaking down some of my favorite picks for each position followed by breaking down my lineup and it’s performance from the previous week.

My plan for week one is to allocate funds to 9 $1 H2H, 5 $2 50/50s, a $5 $100 ticket satellite, and tossing it in a $1 GPP. This will put us $25 out. The live qualifier shot will drop off next week if we take it on the chin which hopefully doesnt happen, but with the craziness that happens on week I am confident that I have a good shot to beat out the 23 others and get that ticket. Hopefully week 1 goes well and we can continue to grow this way and increase our exposure each week until we hit $500. My ultimate goal for this is to grow my bankroll to take a few qualifier shots toward the middle of the season to some live seats or at the very least complete this challenge and continue to make these for each season. Follow along and feel free to comment!

Below are a few picks I am considering using for the upcoming week. Stay tuned for the results early next week and a more comprehensive breakdown on why I picked each and thoughts for the upcoming week.

Matt Ryan- $7500, as a die hard Eagles fan this one hurts but in cash games I think this is one of the safest plays on the board. With a game total of 55 and facing the high tempo Eagles Ryan should have plenty of opportunities to throw the ball and put up massive numbers. The Eagles secondary has been suspect for years and I am not convinced the problems have been fixed yet. Even if he does have a terrible game his floor is still pretty high in the double digits and if the game turns into a shootout he can easily exceed 30+ fantasy points. I expect this to be one of the most popular plays paired with Julio Jones and fading him is a risk I dont think I am willing to take.

Tony Romo- $7300 Another route to take here is Tony Romo who faces the Giants awful secondary this week and the unknown status of the Dallas backfield I expect Romo to have to air it out quite a bit during the game especially if the Superbowl caliber Eli Manning shows up and puts up a quick lead which will force Dallas to drop the running game early. My projections have Romo’s ceiling (34.8) within a point of Ryan but with a lower floor. If this were Romo choke month (December) I would probably easily pick Ryan but I think either is a great pick here.

Matt Forte- $7800- Chicago is a wasteland everywhere except Forte and Olsen. Forte catches a ton of check down passes and averages 8 targets per game which is huge on DK. This makes his floor extremely high and potentially having a huge game which I simply cannot pass up.

Julio Jones $9300- The top Wideout on the board projected for week one and pairing with Matt Ryan is hard to avoid here. If they go off as projected and you dont have them I dont think you can recover in H2H. Jones has averaged 11 targets in the last 16 games and is averaging 9.5 yards per target. Pair that with the Eagles weak secondary and it’s a solid recipe for success. I dont think you can pass this up even if you are not playing Matt Ryan

Martellus Bennett $4300- Tight End is a place I am still kicking around before finilizing my lineups tomorrow morning but it’s hard to ignore Bennet. Similar to the reasons stated above for Forte, Bennett presents a huge red zone target and safety valve throughout the game. Bennett averages 5 receptions per game at around 10 yards per catch. Combine that with being a huge red zone target he has a very high floor for tight ends and the potential for a multi touchdown game. If you didnt play the Thursday-Mon slate or didnt pick Gronk for some reason I think Bennett will be under owned in cash and could be a difference maker. I still need to look into him a little more and his health but from what I can see he should be a great pick

Miami- $3000- Everyone says with Kirk Cousins taking over the helm in Washington this is a huge boost to Miami, I tend to disagree here and I think if RGIII was still playing Miami would be a lock across the board as RGIII is always at risk for a fumble or two and a couple of INTs. I don’t think Cousins will have success in week 1 and Miami defense should be able to bottle up Morris forcing Cousins to make some bad throws. Combined with a low total I feel that this is one of the safest plays on defense but with the uncertainties of week 1 I could be off.

Time to get back to constructing the lineups, hope everyone has a profitable week and looking forward to starting this challenge in the green! See you all in a few days!
