NHL Expansion Draft
Hockey hasn’t quite escaped us yet! We have the expansion draft coming up. I’m getting excited for this. With how Vegas got started I’m sure Seattle has high expectations. The thing is, that won’t matter as there will be so many fans of that team no matter what!!! It took me until now to do this but the folks over at capfriendly allow you to build an expansion team. I will say this is more difficult than you would think, with the stipulations. One other thing I noticed is a lot of bloated contracts. You can’t have all the “good” players. And I’m still not sure “side deals” haven’t taken place. With that being said, I’ll lead with a couple consensus picks it seems everybody is taking. After those I feel you are on your own. Good luck and have fun with it!!!
CGY Flames – It appears as if Mark Giordano would most certainly be on the Kraken. A solid veteran player with leadership ability to get your team started on the right track. Likely the first CPT of the team as well.
CAR Hurricanes – This will likely be Dougie Hamiliton. The problem here is they will have to sign him but he still has other options. We might see SEA overpay or not take him. If they don’t at least try that would be a mistake. All the other CAR guys worth taking have a “high” cap hit.
CLB Blue Jackets – This one comes with risk but I find it hard to believe SEA won’t take a chance on Max Domi. Only issue could be his 5.3 mil cap hit.
MIN Wild – Kaapo Kähkönen is the only one that makes sense here after the Wild found a way to protect Dumba with the buyouts of Parise & Suter.
STL Blues – Vlad Tarasenko is the easiest pick in this draft IMO. He wants out, 7.5 mil is “reasonable” for him, and he’s a goal scorer! Injuries would be the only concern.
TB Lightning – This comes with an asterisk… It will be one of Gourde (seemingly most likely), Palat, or Killorn. Pick your poison and move on.
VAN Canucks – Braden Holtby needs a new start and appears VAN has moved to Demko. Reasonable #1 G cap hit of 4.3 mil.
WPG Jets – Mason Appleton 900K “steal” and really the only one worth it on WPG
CHI Blackhawks – There roster is depleted and they already moved Keith. Not much on the bone here. He’s been moved early and often but it’s Malcomb Subban.
DET Red Wings – Every mock I’ve seen is Troy Stecher. As a DET fan I might disagree but see the appeal of a 1.7 mil top 4/6 D. (my pick would be/is different)
MON Canadiens – Carey Price The only reason this isn’t consensus is because the cap hit of 10.5 mil. Appears they are taking a big gamble here expecting SEA not to take him. There was no “going away” party (or at least that’s kind of how I heard it put on NHL radio).
NY Rangers – Looks like they found a way to protect all the “necessities”. So adios Colin Blackwell (only player even close to worth it and that might be a stretch).
PHI Flyers – I keep seeing JVR everywhere. I know vets are popular players and picks but that 7 mil cap hit is rough!
