NHL Week 1 Wrap Up for DFS

Week 1 is in the books for the 2015 NHL season. Seeing this is my first blog post, I’ll begin with what this blog will entail throughout the season. My goal is to reach out to all fellow NHL DFS players and provide them with information to help them win. Simply put, learn who to select and who to stack. Most weeks will consist of undervalued and overvalued players, and other weeks might include top stacks and don’t stacks. Overall, anyone who is playing NHL DFS will benefit from this weekly blog.

Let’s get started with the Most Undervalued players from week 1. These two players both play on the top lines for their team. They might not get a lot of ice time, but in return, both of their lines include elite scorers. This gives you a good opportunity to pick up assists and a good +/-.

Teuvo Teravainen (CHI-F) $3.8k 1 G 1 A 1 +/- 10 SOG
Jonathan Drouin (TB-F) $4.4k 0 G 2 A 2 +/- 2 SOG
Brandon Sutter (VAN-F) $3.5k 1 G 1 A 2 +/- 5 SOG

Teravainen, Drouin, and Sutter all play along an elite scorer for their team. Teravainen can rack up plenty of assists this year alongside Toews. Drouin is lined up with Stamkos for Tampa Bay, which gives him the opportunity to produce points like none other. And finally, Sutter is paired up with “Thee Sedin Brothers”. You could probably plug yourself into that line and generate just as much points as him. Given the opportunity to play with elite skaters on a top line at an undervalued price has tremendous upside. Take advantage of these prices now as they will begin to rise throughout the season.

Players you can’t go wrong with:
This next group of skaters should be bought no matter what. All four skate on their team’s top line and power play. This produces more time on ice, which can lead to an increase in all scoring stats. The only downside is their price tag, but don’t let that scare you away.

The Sedin Brothers (VAN-F) 2 G 2 A 5 +/- 17 SOG
Zach Parise (MIN-F) 4 G 0 A 2 +/- 10 SOG
Joe Pavelski (SJ-F) 1G 2 A 4 +/- 9 SOG

You can’t go wrong with “Thee Sedin Brothers” as well as Zach Parise. All four skaters rack up SOG and ATOI. Joe Pavelski is also part of this group due to his attitude and tenacity after receiving that “C” patch at the beginning of the season. He definitely lived up to why he should be the captain after his performances in his first two games . Look for all three of these skaters to be putting of numerous goals and assists these first few weeks of the season.

The “Holy” Goalie:
This award does not go to the goalie who gave up the most goals as it might seem in the title. Rather, this award is given to the best goalie of the week. The goalie you should praise for his outstanding tending skills this week is none other than Henrik “The Brickhouse” Lundqvist of the New York Rangers.

Henrik Lundqvist (NYR-G): 3 W 6 GA 100 SV 0.947 SV%

Lundqvist won all three of starts this week. His only blemish is the 6 goals he allowed throughout those wins; 2 goals in each game. He began the season with a tough away opener against the defending Stanley Cup champions, in which he stopped 32 shots. It was a good win, given the Blackhawks high powered offense. The next two games against the Blue Jackets he combined for an impressive 68 saves. He comes with a hefty price tag but no matter the match up he’s capable of getting the job done. Altogether, his 100 save week was impressive enough to earn him The “Holy” Goalie award.

Take Away:
Given it is just the first week, there isn’t much you can take away. Stacking players on the Chicago Blackhawks and the Los Angeles Kings could have back fired for you. But don’t let that steer you away from selecting them again in games for Week 2. Dealing with the departure of players from both teams, they will need a few more games to get into sync. I would start this week with stacking a maximum of 2 skaters for those two teams until they figure out their offense. The most surprising take away from week 1 was that Sydney Crosby didn’t record a single point. However, as usual, he will lace his skates tighter in week 2 and eventually get on the board.
