Should You Target Players Who Are Playing On Their Birthday?

Recently, on March 11th, Anthony Davis put up a huge game against he players. He scored 82.25 DK points. March 11th is Anthony Davis birthday. Then again, on March 14th, Stephen Curry put up 50 DK points. Steph Curry was born on March 14th. This got me to thinking if we should be targeting guys when they play on their birthdays. It is easy to say that Anthony Davis and Steph Curry are always guys to target because they are two of the best players in the NBA so I looked at all situations where players played on their birthday so far this season. Here are the results:

Player Birth Date DK Points Minutes DK Points Per Minute on Birthday Average DK Points Per Minute For Season Difference
Ty Lawson 11/3 26.75 35 0.76 0.74 0.02
Karl-Anthony Towns 11/15 39 37 1.05 1.18 -0.13
Trevor Booker 11/15 35 28 1.25 1.08 0.17
Julius Randle 11/25 29.5 22 1.34 1.12 0.22
Eric Bledsoe 12/9 57.5 33 1.74 1.14 0.60
Robert Covington 12/14 45.45 31 1.47 0.80 0.67
Nicolas Batum 12/14 44.25 37 1.20 0.98 0.22
John Henson 12/28 15 19 0.79 0.96 -.017
Sean Kilpatrick 1/6 4 19 0.21 0.95 -.074
Terrence Jones 1/9 20.75 14 1.48 1.02 0.46
Tony Allen 1/11 9.5 22 0.43 0.81 -.038
Dwyane Wade 1/17 26.25 35 0.75 1.09 -.034
Andre Iguodala 1/28 26.5 24 1.10 0.72 0.38
Terrence Ross 2/5 26.75 26 1.03 0.81 0.22
Klay Thompson 2/8 40.25 29 1.39 0.95 0.44
Paul Millsap 2/10 41 38 1.08 1.12 -.04
Marcus Smart 3/6 31.25 32 0.98 0.84 0.14
Isaiah Whitehead 3/8 13.25 24 0.55 0.73 -.018
Anthony Davis 3/11 82.25 46 1.79 1.47 0.32
Stephen Curry 3/14 50 29 1.72 1.32 0.40

As you can see, more often than not the player has more DK point per minute on their birthday than they have on average up to that point in the season. Could this be due to better matchups and have nothing to do with it being their birthday? Maybe. However, there could be something to this and players may have extra motivation on their birthday. Next up is Terry Rozier on March 17th which is St. Patrick’s Day and Rozier players for the Celtics. He doesn’t play many minutes, but a Celtic player who is born on St. Patrick’s Day and is playing on St. Patrick’s Day? Maybe he is worth a flier in a GPP on that day.

Short answer: No. Long answer: If the player is a key cog anyway and his matchup is ideal, then he should definitely be in consideration for that reason, the birthday angle may only serve to drive his ownership up which could be a big reason to consider a fade.
