SportsTradex: Top MLB Targets 8/12
Hey Grinders, welcome to the Tuesday edition of the SportsTradex Column. SportsTradex is offering a $500 Mini-Slugger tournament which is $25 to enter tonight. They also have some high-stakes Double-Ups and some great H2H action as well. If you haven’t tried the site yet, I highly recommend that you give it a try. They offer a very unique game type with both Draft Contests and Pick ‘Em style contests. There has been some overlay in these games lately, so if you are looking for some value tonight, make sure to check out SportsTradex.
If you haven’t deposited on SportsTradex yet use Referral Code “GRINDERS” (case sensitive, so ALL CAPS) for an up-front cash bonus of 30% up to $120. That’s right, cash in your account you can use right away! They require a 3x rollover before cashing out the bonus. So, if you deposit $100, you must play $300 worth of games before you can cash out your deposit and bonus money. This is one of the best bonuses in the industry!
Description of Draft Contests: Draft a team of 7, 8 or 9 players in this tiered fantasy draft game. The number of players you will draft from each tier varies depending on the strategy option you select in the dropdown box. You have three options:
Option 1: 7 Players: 3A, 1B, 1C, 2D
Option 2: 8 Players: 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D
Option 3: 9 Players: 1A, 3B, 3C, 2D
Here is the breakdown of the tiers:
Tier A – Includes all of the top pitching options
Tier B – Includes value pitching options + the stud hitters
Tier C – Includes mid-range hitting options
Tier D – Includes value hitters (Bargain Bin Ballers)
Tonight I will be taking a well-rounded approach. I am going to choose Option 2 and go with 2 players from each of the tiers. Here are my favorite 3 targets in each of the tiers:
Adam Wainwright – Wainwright hasn’t been as sharp in recent starts, but he’s still the top option in Tier A tonight. He is coming off of a solid start against the Red Sox and now gets to face the strikeout happy Marlins in the huge Marlins Park. Wainwright should be able to take advantage of the big ballpark behind him and be a little more aggressive against this Marlins lineup.
Jon Lester – Lester has pitched well as a member of the A’s pitching staff. He is coming off of a terrific outing against the Twins and now gets to face a powerless Royals offense in a ballpark that is tough to hit HR’s in. Lester may not strike out 10 batters here as the Royals do make good contact, but I think he can give you 7 strong innings with 5+ K’s while giving his team a chance to pick up the win.
C.J. Wilson – I’m not going to be using Wilson in cash games, but I do think he offers great value as a GPP play. He has been struggling in recent starts, but pitched pretty well in his last outing against the Dodgers. He threw 100 pitches in that game and finally looks to be rounding back into form. Tonight he faces a Phillies offense that is ranked 23rd in wOBA vs. LH pitching. He’s also the biggest favorite on the schedule at -250.
Mike Trout – This is an easy one for me. The Angels are my favorite team to target tonight and Mike Trout is their best hitter. He’s one of the best hitters in all of baseball and gives you a great combination of both speed and power. The Angels are the biggest favorites on the board and should put up quite a few runs against Jerome Williams.
Miguel Cabrera – The one thing that I love about SportsTradex is that you don’t have to worry about a salary cap. You just take your favorite plays in each Tier and move on. That really helps Miggy’s fantasy value because you don’t have to pay up for him like you do on other sites. Miggy has 6 hits in his last 2 games and draws a great matchup against Edison Volquez.
Adrian Beltre – Beltre has been terrific at home this season with a wOBA well over .400. Tonight he gets to face Jeremy Hellickson who is a fly ball pitcher. I’ll take a power hitter against a fly ball pitcher in a hitter-friendly ballpark any day of the week. Beltre is locked and loaded as my #3 option in Tier B.
Michael Brantley – Brantley could easily be one of the top targets if he was in Tier B. Luckily for us, he’s listed as an option in Tier C. I have him ranked head and shoulders above all of the other options in this tier. Brantley has a .420 wOBA against RH pitching this season and a terrific matchup against Josh Collmenter who has really struggled on the road.
Justin Upton – Upton has been terrific at home all season long. Tonight he faces Dan Haren who has given up 27 earned runs over his last 6 starts. Haren is trending in the wrong direction and one of the main reasons for that is that he has given up way too many HR’s. Don’t be surprised to see Upton take him deep tonight.
Evan Longoria – Longoria and the Rays have been very good offensively over the last couple of weeks. They draw another favorable matchup tonight as they are facing Nick Martinez in the hitter-friendly Globe Life Park. Martinez has been a reverse-splits pitcher this season as he has given up a .383 wOBA to RH hitters.
Ben Zobrist – I’m going with hot hitters in Tier D. Zobrist has 18 hits over his last 10 games as well as 7 walks. That means that he has safely reached base 25 times over his last 10 games. I mentioned above that the Rays have a terrific matchup against Nick Martinez in Globe Life Park. Look for Zobrist’s hot streak to stay alive tonight.
Josh Harrison – Harrison is also swinging a red hot bat. He has 20 hits over his last 10 games and also draws a favorable matchup tonight. Robbie Ray has not been great in his few starts this season and he has really given up a high average to RH hitters. The Pirates should be in for another solid outing tonight against Ray and the Tigers.
Matt Kemp – Kemp probably has the most upside of any player in this Tier. He is facing Mike Minor who is having a terrible season. A lot of it has been bad luck, but sometimes that just happens to pitchers. Minor has struggled with both LH and RH hitters and Kemp has been batting over .300 over the last 2 months of play.
I’ll see all of you in the $500 Mini-Slugger tonight!
