The Curious Case of the San Antonio Spurs
I do not get the San Antonio Spurs. Yes, they are the bane of DFS players’ existence and it is usually wise to completely ignore them. What I mean is I do not know if this team is good or not. Before I looked at their record, I assumed they were playing .500 ball and well out of the playoff picture. How wrong I was. The Spurs are 32-23 and the #6 seed in the Wast. Sure, they are only about 2.5 games out of the playoff picture altogether, but still doing better than I thought. Here is what really confuses me. The Spurs can’t play defense this year and are giving up just over 110 points per game. That puts them about in the middle of the pack. However, in the past seven games, the team has yielded well over 115 points per game as they have struggled with the murderers’ row of the Phoenix Suns, Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards and New Orleans Pelicans. Yes those teams play fast, but boy do they stink. This all brings me to tonight’s game versus the Warriors. In Golden State. Without DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge who evidently have to manage their respective loads (I could write an entire tome on that subject). The Warriors are going to kill the Spurs. Murder them like Penn Badgley in You. They wil likely score 130+ points and win by 25. But, can the Spurs value get it done? Rudy Gay (almost 1.7ppm without White, Aldridge and DeRozan on the floor), Davis Bertans (only 4100 on DK and in-line for more shots) and Bryn Forbes (4300 on DK and clear point guard) all could be strong value plays tonight. But, that assumes that Pop doesn’t give up when the Warriors are up 20 in the first and second quarter. This is a question I will struggle with all day long and I am really hoping that value opens up elsewhere as I would like to continue to ignore the Spurs.
Oh yeah, one crazy take for you today. I have been wondering all day why Pop would rest DeRozan and Aldridge today in an ESPN game versus the Warriors. Sure, he probably knows the Spurs will get killed and have a better chance against the Trailblazers tomorrow night. But, this is the first game of the season that Aldridge has sat out for rest. My off-the-wall take is that the Spurs are preparing a DeRozan + Aldridge+ something else offer for Anthony Davis. Write it down. And if it comes to pass, I am clearly a genius. And if not, crumple up whatever you wrote that prediction on and throw it in the toilet.
Good luck to all in your contests tonight.
