San Antonio Spurs 2019 Offseason and Team Outlook
2018-19 Record 48-34
2019-20 Record 44-38 Prediction (38-44 Adjusted)
Dejounte Murray should be given the opportunity to start. I know he got hurt last year, and that is kind of unfortunate. They’re now paying Patrick Mills up to $13 mil/yr, and Murray is a RFA after this year. I don’t think it is even in SA power to resign, and depending on his performance this year, I’m sure he’ll outplay his contract, and that will be good for some other franchise that wants to pay for his services.
They will only have these core pieces for two years: DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, and LaMarcus Aldridge, and now add in DeMarre Carroll, who is in a three year contract. It will be interesting to see what Trey Lyles and Jakob Poetl can do with their shorter length contracts. I expect them to hopefully outplay their contracts, and Poetl is a RFA after this year, and Lyles has two more years. If Lyles doesn’t want to change uniforms again, he definitely should make this one count and get into a long term contract with the Spurs.
I don’t really have anything else to say about the Spurs. I don’t love the team to be honest, and with DeMarre Carroll being added as a core piece more or less, I’m not exactly thrilled about their outlook. Something just tells me that we should be expecting some sort of regression with this team. One good thing is after two years, they can completely hit the reset button if they want. Carroll is the only core player signed through 2021-22, then you have Lonnie Walker IV, who was drafted 18th, and Luka Samanic drafted 19th.
I can’t give this team more than a mid grade outlook, because I believe they are tinkering with the possibility of becoming a lottery team in the next few years.
