MLB Grind Down: Friday, August 23rd - COL @ STL
Colorado at St. Louis – 8:15 PM ET
Lambert has made 13 starts this season, posting a 5.25 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 15%. He has basically struggled in every start outside of his major league debut. He comes into tonight’s game as a big underdog against the Cardinals and can be avoided in all formats. St. Louis has struggled against righties this season, but should be able to find success in this matchup.
Quick Breakdown: Avoid Lambert in cash games and tournaments.
Flaherty is one of my favorite pitchers of the slate. He has been one of the best pitchers in baseball since the All-Star break. In his last three starts, he owns a 3.64 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 30%. The fact that the Rockies can roll out a left-handed heavy lineup scares me a little, but who are we really worried about outside of Charlie Blackmon? Flaherty is pitching at home as a huge favorite and he’s priced under $10,000 on both FanDuel and DraftKings. The Rockies are a bottom five offense on the road with the eighth highest strikeout rate.
Quick Breakdown: Flaherty is an elite tournament play on both FanDuel and DraftKings.
Batter Grind Down
Jack Flaherty has struggled against left-handed hitters this season, but the Rockies are facing him on the road in a pitcher-friendly ballpark. I try to avoid targeting hitters against elite pitchers, especially in large slates like this one. If you are building 100 lineups, I would get some exposure to Charlie Blackmon (.371 xwOBA) and Daniel Murphy (.289 xwOBA), but I would much rather play Flaherty.
Elite Plays – None
Secondary Plays – None

I expect the Cardinals to garner quite a bit of ownership tonight and while I do think this is a get-right spot for their offense, they are well down my list of power rankings for this slate. Peter Lambert has allowed a .227 ISO to righties this season, but has been incredible unlucky against them. He has actually held batters from the right side to a .307 xwOBA with a 54% ground ball rate. We want to load up on lefties facing Lambert, but the Cardinals have very few of those in their lineup. Rather than stacking St. Louis, I will be targeting Dexter Fowler and Kolten Wong as one-offs.
