MLB Grind Down: Friday, August 23rd - NYY @ LAD

NY Yankees at LA Dodgers – 10:10 PM ET

The Yankees couldn’t get much going against Oakland and now lose the designated hitter in a series against the Dodgers. Paxton has a ton of talent and is discounted across the industry. While it’s nice that he’ll face the opposing pitcher in the lineup, this is still a difficult matchup. The Dodgers’ projected lineup has an average xwOBA of .347 with an average ISO of .206 against left-handed pitching.

Quick Breakdown: Paxton is viable in the late slate, but there are better options for the main slate.

Ryu is having an incredible season and is one of the few pitchers in baseball that I expect to sustain a lower ERA than SIERA. In 23 starts, he owns a 1.64 ERA with a strikeout rate of 22% and a walk rate of 3%. He generates a lot of ground balls and a lot of soft contact. He certainly has the talent to pitch well in any matchup, but he’s priced up on multi-pitcher sites. The Yankees’ projected lineup has an average ISO of .200 against left-handed pitching.

Quick Breakdown: Ryu is viable in the late slate, but I would rather have Jacob deGrom or Jose Berrios for the main slate.

Batter Grind Down

The Yankees see a negative park shift, they lose the DH in this series, and they draw one of the worst possible matchups. Hyun-Jin Ryu doesn’t walk batters, he has a high ground ball rate, and he has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .290 xwOBA and under a .120 ISO. I will always have interest in Aaron Judge (.461 xwOBA) at a sub-$4,000 price point on DraftKings, but this isn’t a lineup that I want to load up on.

Elite PlaysAaron Judge (DK GPP)

Secondary PlaysAaron Judge (DK Cash), Gary Sanchez (DK)

The Dodgers are in the same boat as the Yankees. While they have a talented offense, why target them in an awful matchup when there are so many great spots to exploit in the main slate? James Paxton does give up a .246 ISO and a 2.08 HR/9 to righties, but A.J. Pollock (.388 xwOBA), Justin Turner (.394 xwOBA), and Will Smith (.323 xwOBA) are deep tournament fliers at best.

Elite Plays – None

Secondary PlaysA.J. Pollock (GPP), Justin Turner (GPP), Will Smith (DK)
