MLB Grind Down: Thursday, June 20th - SFG @ LAD
San Francisco at LA Dodgers – 10:10 PM ET
All eyes of our nation will be on the Madison Bumgarner vs Max Muncy matchup tonight. Okay, probably not, but it’s still an interesting matchup to monitor. The numbers suggest this isn’t a good matchup for Bumgarner and one we should run away from. The Dodgers strike out at a below-average rate (21.8%) versus lefties and own a team wRC+ of 109 against southpaws. This is just a good offense against left-handed pitching. At the same time, Bumgarner has faced the Dodgers three times this season and has posted DraftKings scores of 17.3, 23.9 and 20.75. These aren’t earth-shattering scores, but they also aren’t awful considering the nature of this slate. I’m not touching Bumgarner in cash games, but at his price, I will leave him in my GPP player pool.
Quick Breakdown: The matchup isn’t great, but Bumgarner has been serviceable this season against the Dodgers in three outings. He’s a GPP option-only for me if you want to chase his floor.
Urias is averaging a strikeout per inning and continues to possess great stuff, but the problem is he hasn’t thrown more than 41 pitches or gone more than three innings in any outing over the past two months. The Dodgers continue to use him more as an opener and Caleb Ferguson is expected to throw after him. This should be a team effort so I’m looking elsewhere.
Quick Breakdown: Urias will be treated as an opener so this will cap his upside. Pass.
Batter Grind Down
With Urias and Ferguson both lefties, I’d expect the Giants to go right-handed heavy. This should put Tyler Austin in the middle of their order as he’ll hold the platoon advantage and does have a .224 ISO against left-handed pitching this season. He hit a homer yesterday and is viable as a cheap punt option. I’m also fine with Buster Posey as a cheap punt option at catcher if he’s batting cleanup. All these Giants are cheap, but I’d limit my overall exposure to them. Someone like Donovan Solano will likely leadoff, but he’s just not a great hitter, and I don’t think we need his savings on this slate.
Elite Plays – None
Stackability – RED
Bumgarner has been good enough this season where I don’t really want to stack against him. We should have some viable one-offs we can use against him, such as Kike Hernandez if he’s batting leadoff. And yes, BvP alert here.
Nobody is going to play Cody Bellinger or Max Muncy here in a lefty-on-lefty matchup, and they are best reserved for Dodgers stacks in GPPs at likely low ownership. If you did do a Dodgers stack in large-field tournaments, I’d focus on a Kike/Freese/Bellinger/Taylor/Muncy stack. I’m not in love with the stack, but it does have upside. I just wish the ballpark and matchup was better, and for the most part I envision myself using these Dodgers more as one-offs given the salary relief they provide.
