MLB Grind Down: Thursday, September 12th - BOS @ TOR
Boston at Toronto – 7:07 PM ET
The Red Sox essentially picked up Chacin to be an opener. Since joining Boston, he has pitched six innings combined in three outings. He’s had a down year overall and is not going to pitch deep into this game. He’s an easy fade against the Blue Jays, whose projected lineup has an average xwOBA of .326 with an average ISO of .205 against right-handed pitching.
Quick Breakdown: Avoid Chacin in all formats.
Buchholz has a higher barrel rate than rate this season, which is only the case for a handful of pitchers in baseball. Additionally, he owns a 5.53 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 12% and a ground ball rate of 46%. He struggles with batters from both sides of the plate and draws a tough matchup against the Red Sox, whose projected lineup has an average xwOBA of .359 with an average k-rate of only 20% against right-handed pitching.
Quick Breakdown: Avoid Buchholz in all formats.
Batter Grind Down
The Red Sox are right there with the Dodgers as my favorite stack of the slate. The two teams are similar in terms of talent level and both are playing in hitter-friendly ballparks. The tiebreaker might go to the matchup and Clay Buchholz has been one of the most hittable pitchers in baseball this season. He has allowed a .350+ xwOBA and a .190+ ISO to batters from both sides of the plate. As noted above, he has more barrels allowed than strikeouts this season. Mookie Betts, Rafael Devers, Xander Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez, and Mitch Moreland all mash right-handed pitching.
Stackability – GREEN
Jhoulys Chacin isn’t going to pitch too deep into this game and I have yet to see who the long reliever for Boston is going to be. This makes predicting fantasy production difficult when it comes to the Blue Jays. Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio, Vladimir Guerrero, Rowdy Tellez, and Randal Grichuk all have good power against right-handed pitching, but they could easily end up facing a lefty out of the bullpen. Outside of a full stack in large-field tournaments, I don’t feel great about the Blue Jays.
