MLB Grind Down: Tuesday, August 13th - OAK @ SFG
Oakland at San Francisco – 9:45 PM ET
We have two southpaws on the mound tonight in San Francisco. Anderson hasn’t been very good this season, posting a 5.24 SIERA with a strikeout rate of only 12%. While that’s far from ideal, he generates a ton of ground balls and he gets to pitch in an elite pitcher’s park. Even better, he gets to face the Giants, who are a bottom five offense in baseball in basically every category against southpaws.
Quick Breakdown: I don’t see the appeal in the main slate, but Anderson could be a decent SP2 in the late slate.
Bumgarner is always on my radar when he’s pitching at home, especially when he’s priced under $9,000 on FanDuel and DraftKings. In 25 starts this season, he owns a 4.18 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 24% and a walk rate of 5%. The problem tonight is that he’s facing an A’s lineup that owns an average xwOBA of .354 with an average k-rate of only 17% against southpaws. I’m not overly concerned about Bumgarner giving up five or more runs, but I do worry about his strikeout upside in this matchup.
Quick Breakdown: Bumgarner is viable in the late slate, but I’ll take Flaherty over him in the main slate.
Batter Grind Down
Even though I won’t be targeting the starters in this game, I will steer clear of the two offenses. Madison Bumgarner has an above-average strikeout rate, he’s been dominant at home over the last couple of seasons, and he has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .330 xwOBA. Matt Chapman (.369 xwOBA), Mark Canha (.357 xwOBA), Chad Pinder (.359 xwOBA), and Stephen Piscotty (.386 xwOBA) all bat from the right side and have good numbers against southpaws, but they are best suited as late slate plays.
Elite Plays – None
Secondary Plays – Matt Chapman (Late), Mark Canha (Late), Chad Pinder (Late), Stephen Piscotty (Late)
Stackability – ORANGE
The Giants have an exploitable matchup against Brett Anderson, but that doesn’t change the fact that they are still the Giants. We shouldn’t go out of our way to target hitters in this ballpark in a 14-game slate. With that said, Anderson has allowed a .367 xwOBA and a .155 ISO to batters from the right side of the plate. Donovan Solano (.413 xwOBA), Austin Slater (.360 xwOBA), and Evan Longoria (.368 xwOBA) are deep tournament fliers at best.
Elite Plays – None
Secondary Plays – Donovan Solano (GPP), Austin Slater (GPP), Evan Longoria (GPP)
