MLB Grind Down: Wednesday, June 19th - CHW @ CHC

Chicago White Sox at Chicago Cubs – 8:05 PM ET

Giolito has defied all odds and has become one of the best pitchers in DFS. In 13 starts this season, he has a 2.22 ERA with a strikeout rate of 30%. That’s quite a difference from last year’s 6.13 ERA and 16% strikeout rate. The wind is blowing in from left field tonight (14 MPH), so Giolito sees a positive park shift. He also gets to face the opposing pitcher in the lineup with this being a National League ballpark. The Cubs have a good offense, but they strike out at a high rate against right-handed pitching.

Quick Breakdown: Giolito feels expensive, but that will help keep ownership down. He’s viable in tournaments.

Lester has actually pitched well this season, posting a 4.18 SIERA with a strikeout rate of 23% and a walk rate of 6%. He has improved his ability to hold runners and he comes into tonight’s game as a large underdog with the total set at only 7.0 runs. The White Sox lose the DH in this series and we have a helping wind blowing in from left field. Basically, everything is lining up for Lester tonight. Chicago’s projected lineup has an average k-rate of 24% against lefties and that doesn’t even include the numbers for Giolito, who has yet to take an at-bat this season.

Quick Breakdown: This goes against my brand, but I like Lester for both cash games and tournaments.

Batter Grind Down

This game has one of the lowest totals of the slate. As I often mention, Wrigley Field can be a hitter’s park or a pitcher’s park depending on the wind strength and direction. With a 14 MPH wind blowing in from left field, this is essentially Petco Park. The White Sox lose the DH in this series and they have struggled against southpaws all year. Outside of Jose Abreu (.395 xwOBA) or James McCann (.345 xwOBA) as one-offs in tournaments, this is an offense that we can avoid.

Elite Plays – None

Secondary PlaysJose Abreu (GPP), James McCann (GPP)

When it comes to hitters, we can pretend this game is not even on the schedule. We have two capable pitchers on the mound and a pitcher-friendly ballpark. Lucas Giolito has an elite strikeout rate and has held both left and right-handed hitters under a .290 xwOBA this season. Kyle Schwarber (.235 ISO) is cheap enough that he can still be targeted in tournaments.

Elite Plays – None

Secondary PlaysKyle Schwarber (GPP)
