NBA Grind Down: Wednesday, December 5th

Welcome to the RotoGrinders NBA Grind Down. In this all-encompassing preview of today’s NBA action, every game will be broken down statistically, with several key elements highlighted in our charts.

Vegas lines are broken down to show projected Implied Team Totals, to give you an idea of who is favored to win, and often more importantly, how many points they’re expected to score. We also provide pace numbers, so you can spot a game that might have a few extra possessions and more opportunities for fantasy points.

We also provide position-by-position matchup rankings for every team, to give you an idea of the players who will be in better situations to succeed. Using Defense versus Position data, every projected starter is listed along with his opponent’s rank in points allowed to players of his position. These color-coded charts will help you spot the best matchups of the night at a glance.

We kick off tonight’s ten-game slate with the Nuggets and Magic in a game that features a low spread and a low total. The Magic used to be one of the most exploitable matchups for DFS, but that hasn’t been the case this season. Orlando is ranked 23rd in pace of play and sixth in points allowed per game. The Nuggets have an implied total of only 106 points, which is the fourth lowest of the slate and 4.2 points below their season average.

Gary Harris has been ruled out of tonight’s game, which gives a significant boost to Jamal Murray, Malik Beasley, and Monte Morris. Neither player sees a huge FP/min boost in his absence, but both should see an uptick in playing time. We can safely project Murray to play minutes in the upper 30s against a Magic team that is ranked 21st in efficiency against point guards. Beasley and Morris should fly under the radar given all of the value available in a ten-game slate and are both worth a look in tournaments.

Juancho Hernangomez should see an uptick in playing time as well, but he’s priced appropriately across the industry and the Magic are ranked eighth in efficiency against small forwards this season. Paul Millsap has been in solid form over his last four games, averaged 29 minutes and 35 fantasy points during that stretch. He’s an intriguing tournament play, but is still a little too volatile to trust in cash games. As usual, center is one of the deepest positions of the slate. I’ll always condone playing Nikola Jokic in tournaments, but Nikola Vucevic has transformed into a very good defender (4th out of 30 in DRPM) this season.

The Magic have won six of their last ten games and have worked their way back to .500 on the season. While that’s encouraging, the matchup is quite the opposite. The Nuggets have played at the fourth slowest pace of any team in basketball and are ranked fourth or better in points allowed per game, defensive efficiency, and rebounding differential. Despite playing at home, the Magic have an implied total of only 100.5 points, which is the lowest on the board and 5.3 points below their season average.

The larger the slate, the more picky we can be with our selections. The fact that a few key players have been ruled out already really opens up some obvious plays. Unless you are building multiple tournament lineups, the Magic are a team that we can easily cross off our list of potential targets. The Nuggets are ranked 14th or better in efficiency against all five positions on the floor. There are better point-per-dollar targets at each and every position tonight, so why force any Magic players into our lineups in such a bad matchup?
