The Hurricanes have done a great job of playing some good hockey of late and it looks like they will be rewarded for it as long as they can keep up this frantic pace. Their 7-2-1 record over the last 10 games has landed them in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, which means they would qualify for the play-offs if they started today. The only real bad game they have had over the last since the beginning of February was the 8-1 loss they suffered three games ago at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets. Carolina will look to the top line of Nino Niederreiter, Sebastian Aho and Justin Williams to set the pace as they have combined for 11 goals and eight assists over the last nine games. Aho leads the team with 30 goals and 47 assists while Teuvo Teravainen and his team leading 11 points over the last three weeks has him sitting at 65 points on the season. Jordan Staal and Andrei Svechnikov skate with Teravainen on the second line and should be looked at here as the Blue Jackets will surely try to stop the top line from scoring. Brett Pesce has found the score sheet seven times over the last nine games from the blue line but Dougie Hamilton still looks to be the best choice here. His 30 points lead both Jaccob Slavin and Justin Faulk where defensive scoring is concerned which gives the Carolina blue line four choices to choose from this evening.
The Blue Jackets desperately need a win here as they were tied for the eighth and final play-off spot in the Eastern Conference going into last night’s action. Give Columbus credit as they were major players when the trading deadline ended as instead of dumping their UFA’s, they got two more to make a play-off run. Of course we are talking about Matt Duchene and Ryan Dzingel as they both skate on their new team’s second line. In their 7-4 win over Boston on Tuesday night both players had a goal along with their line mate in Josh Anderson while Boone Jenner lit the lamp three times from the third line.
