The Kings played decent hockey for about 53 minutes the other night against the Islanders as they held the Metropolitan Division leaders in check by a score of 2-1. Yes, we’ve all seen his story before but I will tell you anyway. New York posted three goals in five minutes to snatch the win away from the Kings and give them their 29th loss of the season. Anze Kopitar racked up his team leading 15th goal while skating with Alex Iafallo and Dustin Brown on the team’s top line. He also leads the team with 36 points but even that isn’t that great as only one other time in his career has Kopitar found himself with a lower points-per-game average than he does today. Ilya Kovalchuk skates with Carl Hagelin and Adrian Kempe while Jeff Carter centers the second line with Tyler Toffoli and Brendan Leipsic flanking him on the wings. Defenseman Drew Doughty is about the only bright spot here as his 28 points in 51 games ranks him third on the team and 21st in the league where finding the score sheet is concerned. With Jake Muzzin out of the way look for Alec Martinez to pick a few more minutes of ice time both in the 5×5 situations and on the second power play unit. What he does with the extra time is up to him as he has grabbed 11 points while averaging just about 20 minutes of ice time in the 37 games he has suited up for.
The Rangers come into this one trying to move some players as the core that they have has produced a record worthy of being the 12th best team in the 16 team Eastern Conference. The Rangers however have three things going for them this evening. The first being that their home record of 13-8-5 would indicate that they do have the talent to skate with more than just the bad teams in the league. The second being the fact that their opponent is indeed is the worst team in the league where goal scoring is concerned. Lastly, the top line of Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider and Mats Zuccarello have combined for 16 goals and 19 assists over the last eight games.
